This is how I see it.
The dredging of the Niger opens up a totally new and much cheaper way to distribute goods around the SE, SS, Abuja (through Lokoja) and the Middle Belt. There will be no bad roads (Apapa - Oshodi) or high cost of rent as obstacles to the free flow of commerce. The cost of river transportation is also dirt cheap compared to road and the only money spent would be on dredging and keeping the water clear, in total still much more cheaper than road or rail.

As soon as the river port in Lokoja and the deep sea port in Akwa Ibom are completed, there will be a very dramatic effect on Lagos. Money always goes where business is easier and cheaper.

River Benue is also going to be dredged which means that River Niger would be the preferred route for transportation of foodstuff down South from Benue and Mambilla.
It will be so much cheaper and convenient.

a lot of people do not know this.a fully loaded medium sized barge carries a load up to 30 big lorries carry and it consumes far less fuel.

Don't discuss what you don't know. As I write this piece Anambra International Cargo Airport construction will soon take off, asaba airport is just a small local  passenger airport with no such facility for cargo business and expansion. There is no doubt that Anambra will not use that airport. Anambra airport was commissioned and designated by the FG to be international passenger/cargo airport which will soon come on stream. So you don't sit somewhere and claim what you don't know. With the Onitsha Port and International Cargo Airport, Anambra is set to be the next economic hub of SE/SS and Nigeria at large with all the international and national investors that are presently trooping in Anambra

the way u go off attacking anyone that slightly gives a contrasting view is something else.na that you clerified the issue what was the use of the condescending tone?

and where is the cargo airpot going to be located?
Re: Onitsha River Port Ready By October by chino11(m): 9:09am On Oct 01, 2011
The Anambra International Cargo airport is located in the Anambra East not too far from the Orient Petroleum (Oil and Gas) Refinery. The airport is centrally located for use of the oil companies for international and national purposes, it is just 10 min drive to the economic/commercial capital of Onitsha through American qtrs/Onitsha GRA and 20min to Awka the administrative state capital and about 25-30 min to technological capital of Nnewi. Presently things are falling in pleasant places for Anambra taking the position of the hub of Nigeria and West Africa

@Chino, so it's just a cargo airport.Any plans to upgrade it to passenger airport in the future? Right now business ideas are swarming my head,eg building warehouses.
But i still think the Asaba international and cargo airport will give it runs for it's money.

Anambra to become oil producing state soon –Anyaoku

Barring any unforeseen circumstance, Anambra State will join the league of oil producing states in the country in three months time. This development, was made known by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary General and a major stakeholder in Orient Petroleum Company Plc, which is currently building a refinery in Otuocha, the headquarters of Anambra East Local Government.

Speaking during the special event, held last weekend as part of the activities marking the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Anambra State, Chief Anyaoku stated that within the said three months period, the prospect of Anambra becoming an oil producing state will be a reality, more so, when the Orient Petroleum is expected to get to the stage of exploring the crude oil in the Anambra basin.

Chief Anyaoku, who chaired the special anniversary lecture titled: “Anambra at 20: A Call for Collective Action” presented by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, also commended the state governor, Peter Obi for celebrating the attainment of 20 years by the state. During her presentation, Okonjo Iweala used the opportunity offered by the event to warn Nigerians that the country’s oil reserve will last for the next 35 years; hence there is an urgent need now to move the economy from one that is mono product based to a diversified one, with emphasis on agriculture, industrialization and repair of existing infrastructures.

The Finance Minister said: “We have to look at the non-traditional sectors, like the Nollywood, an industry that has created 200,000 direct jobs, we won’t interfere in that sector, as a government, we would provide the enabling environment for them to thrive,” adding that it is now time to priorities our needs and operate manageable budgets. Earlier, the state governor, Peter Obi had defended his administration’s celebration of 20th anniversary of the state saying: “We are celebrating the 20th anniversary because for the first time in the past four years, Anambra state did not experience any form of what we are known for, and that is why we are celebrating, our present situation is worth celebrating.”

Am sure By His Grace, Anambra Orient Refinery will take off by November or December 2011 at worst, plus or minus.

Anambra International Cargo airport was licensed by the FG as passenger/cargo, while that of asaba is only passenger purpose only. Again asaba airport is merely a white elephant project which was built not considering the needs of delta people, how could a government build an airport just to service the neighboring states without thinking of what will benefit the people of his state most? Anambra International Cargo airport is multi-purpose and centrally located in the heart of Anambra which will entail that even passenger in Kogi, Nsukka, Enugu, Imo and some SS states will make use of it and most importantly the surging passengers of the oil and gas companies, Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi to say the least. It will all boil down that asaba airport would have become a ghost airport and wasted resources.

Whether rumor or non, it doesn't make any practical sense, its a matter of government will and transport policy. And also such things will not stop Anambra airport since it already taking shapes

I don't think that is correct.I don't see anything wrong if the big boys in transportation industry jointly or individual set-up Airlines that will serve Anambra Airport. It will mean more business and expansion for them.

@Chino,take a chill pill bro, i dont like the way you attack others whenever anyone says anything contrary to your own views especially on Anambra related issues. I'm a core Anambra guy myself, but we have to welcome opinion and criticism from others. Like someone rightly said, i think the ready-for-commissioning Asaba airport would negatively affect the construction of the cargo airport. Anambra lost it when the airport was relocated from the original site at Oba to Otuocha and virtually nothing has been done on the new site. So nwanne mmadu welu nwayo.

Then you are not from Anambra. The present location of Anambra International Cargo Airport is the best location for it. Its within 5min drive from the Orient Petroleum (Oil & Gas) Refinery in Otuocha, from Onitsha to the airport is about 10min, Awka 20-25 min while Nnewi is 40min drive. So you can see that the airport is centrally located. As a land economist, asaba airport is ill-conceived, the govt did not consider what is best for Delta people. As it is now the delta gov built an airport hoping for its neighbours to run and enjoy it. He should have done roads, bring pipe borne water and other social amenities instead of embarking on such a white elephant project that does not benefit the delta masses presently, and after the airport has consumed billions of naira its still not completed as at today.
Re: Onitsha River Port Ready By October by hugooh42(m): 12:34pm On Oct 02, 2011
@Chino,From the vanguard newspaper report you attched here ,its says that the Anambra airport is a cargo airport nothing more than that.On the other hand don't forget that Asaba international Airport was innitially built to cater for passengers but was latter upgraded to take care of cargo too.So most of the importers in Onitsha will definetely use it and that guaranttees revenue for the Deltans which will in turn be used for other developmental purposes.
Go to Asaba now you see that Anambra people have bought up all the land there and erecting structures.I recently tried to get one near the Airport but alas almost all the area have already been sold out. While some are building warehouses others are building hotels to serve the airport. And of course many other businesses are going to spring up once the airport becomes fully functional.

Your lies are from the pit hell. Anambra airport is an International Cargo and Passenger airport as licenced by the FG, while that of asaba- delta is a much more a local airport. As an estate surveyor/valuer by profession, Anambra people are presently investing in Awka the state capital and New Anamcity (http://anamcity.com/) not heavily water-logged asaba. I have been to asaba the place is hugely messed up with flooded pot-hole roads due to the terrain.

I don't know how to make you to comprehend. Anambra International Cargo Airport is centralised that it will make both economic and geographical sense for somebody in Onitsha to land in Anambra airport within 20min and somebody in Awka will get their in 30min while the traveler from Nnewi will arrive in about 40-50min max. Again due to the vibrancy of the Anambra Airport which will be used by the up coming Orient Pet. Refinery it will be a beehive of activities and integration which will attract both foreign nationals and otherwise. This is the whole essence of economic development. Ka o mesia

guy i think there is some truth in onitsha traders buying lands in asaba

Most of these big time traders in Onitsha live in Asaba and most of the houses here in the new Asaba city, even around my residence, 30 per cent of them are owned by Onitsha businessmen.

The link you posted was a propaganda statement made by a commissioner in delta state on political, the commission even went ahead to say that Onitsha businessmen will be using Warri Port. I ask you again does it any economic and social sense that a businessman in Onitsha will leave a nearby Onitsha Port and travel the rigors of bad roads to warri to get his imported stuffs or export with all the roads full of militants.
