The claim of the king is untrue. We need to ask other prominent kings. I believe in the fact that influence of politicians on kingship can't be undermined.

This is why certain monarchical stools in Nigeria hold no societal relevance.

In Yakurr LGA of Cross River where I come from, the Obol Lopon (King) of Ugep is picked through a sacred traditional ritual that is performed by the Chief Priest and Kingmaker. The three maternal clans who have historically been christened for the stool are gathered, and whether there be 60 people in attendance, the chief priest throws the coronation towel of the gods that floats until it settles on the shoulder of the one who's chosen.

Once that's done, no single soul utters a word in argument or defiance. The king is crowned and can be on that stool for 50years or more, depending on what the gods deem fit, according to his well rounded earthly behaviour and handling of the stool.

No governor or political leader has a bloody say over who sits on that stool. The only time the Governor does the selection based on popular votes or opinion is when one king is to be crowned the paramount ruler of all other village kings in my LGA.

All these 21st century half-baked monarchies being decided by politicians is the reason people like Ganduje can wake up and disgrace a whole Emir, then balkanize his kingdom.. . Tomorrow una no go allow us hear something with nonsensical bragging!

I have said many times, most of these Obas are worthless and useless,

Because African majic and Nollywood, so many Yorubas still see theses people as a god, the obaship have no single benefits to their domain or society, but plenty disadvantages as they are threat to the people living within their domain using their political power and diabolic power

Anytime this Oluwo speaks, he speaks nonsense. In few days, yoruba monarchs will start telling everyone to ignore this rubbish talks and pretend like Oluwo didn't say anything.

Even in Lagos Agberos are rewarded with kingship. Almost all kings in Lagos are loyal boys to Lagos landlord, many were known owomidalistic bustop Agberos.

I respect real royalty
Even when the British deposed Ovonwramen,The Benin people defied their then masters and refused that a puppet of the British be seated on that throne,
That’s real royalty even the British could not break the line of succession that has lasted for over 1000years
The present Oba is the 44th monarch from that one line since Eweka 1

And someone will say A governor can depose the Oba of Benin
The Governor can command it, but who will enforce it
No Benin soldier, civil servant, politician will partake of it,no one will even dare to take over the throne
Not even the Chiefs

As roggerd as Benin is as a state with terrible issues with violence ,dem no dey carry an near Oba Palace

Oba ghatokpe e abeg!!!

The yahoo boy called Oluwo is right with that observation. He was picked by Aregbesola, not Ifa or the people of Iwo.

Oga i put it to you, that whether appointed by the gods/oracles or not, any traditional ruler that go against the state government and incite the crowd also, will not last.

Sanusi simply bit more than he could chew versus Ganduje, overestimating his importance in the process. We know how it all ended.

Go figure, no traditional ruler goes against state government, regardless of party.

In the last decade, only Sanusi tried it and we know how it ended.

you lied or you are not enlighten. In my place is purely hereditary (from father to son), it's not contestable; nothing like ruling house. It's place where they have ruling houses and kinship is contestable are the ones the political class middle on who become king.

Obas are chosen by kingmakers who follow the directives of the ifa and the tradition. However, the Nigeria constitution has given final approval to the governor.

Now the twist is this, once the kingmakers present their choice to the governor, it could be overturned by the governor. And many Nigerian governors, being the politicians that they are, they often politicize the process ruling against people who they believe are political enemies. They might ask the kingmakers to make a different choice for political reasons.

Aside that, they go with the choices of the kingmaker.
