Tinubu Puts Nigeria Back On The Map As Investors Weigh Reforms by abc115: 10:02am On Jun 19, 2023 |
“The excitement about the new president and his reforms is palpable,” a senior banker at a U.K-based financial institution told BusinessDay about how the foreign investor community is warming up to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms. “I was in three cities in the United States last week to see clients and everybody was talking about Nigeria. “He has put Nigeria back at the top of the agenda, in a positive way,” the banker said. Nigeria is on the lips of foreign investors again after nearly a decade of slipping under the radar. Such is the rate at which President Tinubu has taken the world by surprise with bold reforms that looked impossible in the eight years prior to his assumption of Nigeria’s top office late last month. Costly petrol subsidies were gone on his first day in office, paving the way for a tripling in petrol prices. The “thorough house-cleaning of monetary policy” he promised has also started with the suspension of Godwin Emefiele as CBN governor, followed quickly by the deregulation of the foreign exchange market which promptly led to the naira taking a more than 30 percent haircut at the official market. The reforms have brought pain to Nigerians who now spend three times more to fill their car tanks. What Tinubu has achieved in weeks, his immediate predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, could not in years. That leads to the first set of questions foreign investors have been asking about Nigeria in the past week. . Buhari had avoided these tough calls for fear of the social unrest they could spark in a country where poverty is rife and inflation is at a record-high. Tinubu has, however, made light work of the difficult reforms and has done so while quelling protests that initially threatened to erupt as a result. Taking away cheap fuel from people that had grown accustomed to the practice for many years was not going to happen without a fight.. https://businessday.ng/news/article/tinubu-puts-nigeria-back-on-the-map-as-investors-weigh-reforms/ 6 Likes |

“I was in three cities in the United States last week to see clients and everybody was talking about Nigeria. “He has put Nigeria back at the top of the agenda, in a positive way,” the banker said. Buhari did himself and Nigeria a great disservice when he shut out Tinubu from his government. Instead of having his old nephew running a cabal within Aso Villa, he should have drawn Tinubu closer. 8 Likes |

SpecialAdviser: Only for you. For us we are moving forward. The other day an LP stalwart was saying that the UN is wary that Nigeria may become a superpower with Tinubu as leader. That is what he is hearing at meetings of international diplomats on Nigeria. You are there thinking of doom. That doom is only in your family. 5 Likes |

How is this good news... Do people still read or just jump on headlines.. What is an investor doing in a poverty capital/unemployment capital.. the only thing investors seek is cheap labour which the new electricity tariff that takes effect next month is not even palatable.. Where are the people policies.. the policies that take people out of poverty, those policies increase buying power which in turn creates employment. |

a4cube: The bills Tinubu has been signing was by Buhari's administration. Buhari already stopped paying for oil subsidy 6 months ago. Government is a continuous process and Buhari has done alot to pave way for Tinubu to be successful in his administration. 1 Like 1 Share |

Essenza01: Simple economics. A stronger economy creates jobs which in turn gets people out of poverty. What poor people like you should do right now is find ways to learn a trade and stop constituting nuisance online. Go learn a skill.. Be it bricklaying, tailoring, plumbing, farming (cashew farming in particular), computing, etc once you can use your hand/brain to do something someone else finds valuable, you will be well compensated for it. When you get your salary don’t spend everything on olosho, invest it in the stock market and let your money work for you. Do this for yourself and future generations, otherwise your children will curse you for being an obi.diot. |
