Many residents have sent Save-Our-Soul appeal to Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo and President Bola Tinubu to come to their aid as landslide cuts off Onitsha-Owerri expressway.
The erosion, they said, was not only threatening many buildings but also lives of residents of Oba in Idemili South local government area of Anambra State.

According to them, only a lane was currently being plied on the busy highway further slowing traffic as the slide, said to be about 100 meters deep and 400 meters long had buried the concrete culvert earlier used to control gully erosion there.

No reconstruction had begun in the affected area which had been cordoned off. Major cracks were seen several metres along the road from the popular Oba junction.

A resident, Innocent Akwuegbu, told The Nation that those living around the area were at the risk of losing their lives if nothing was done urgently by both the state and federal governments. For, Chinyeaka Okpara from Abia State, their building and many others were at risk of being swallowed by the erosion soon.

Some property owners were yesterday seen inspecting the extent of damage with a view to deciding their next action.

Others, whose filling stations and houses were close to the site of the landslide said that with the rainy season getting to its peak, there were fears that the menace might claim more land in the area.

An Onitsha- based businessman, Chief Francis Nnaka, who said he had a recently built two-storey building close to the affected area called on the federal and state governments to intervene without further delay to save many buildings and land already acquired for development.
“Government cannot say that it did not know that gully erosion was developing on this spot for over one year.

“Last week, it was just about two feet to the road and If they had controlled it at that level, this massive slide would not have occurred. Now, hundreds of millions of naira will be spent to handle it.

“And if nothing is done immediately, both lanes of the expressway will be affected, which might lead to a complete closure of the Oba section of the road,” Nnaka lamented.

So should you be elected as leader you will only focus your attention and governance on the percentage that gave you their thumbs on Election Day and not to the entire people who look up to you for guidance and the way forward.

Sad to note that people like you are all over the country, only protecting their selfish interests by dividing to conquer, and leaving the people to suffer.

So because the people plying that route did not vote the Governor, or better put, their choice candidate did not win, the road should be allowed to deteriorate into a death trap so that they will all pay the price for their wrong choice. Is that how your brain is wired ?!?

I really hope the internet plays its part by never forgetting and keeping this comment till a day you will run for an elected position. So this post you made will be back to reveal to people who you really are, a selfish nepotistic bigot.

Some people are just insensitive, sickening!

Beyond politics, who can explain why Anambra seems to be very prone to erosion?

The soil that I see there is red soil which is claylike in nature, so why then does it wash off so bad to the point that the report says up to 100m? 100M is too deep to be filled back, so what really causes it?

Thank God that our beloved former governor Chief Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano wisely relocated our Anambra International airport from Oba to Umueri if not erosion would have swallowed the airport since. That Idemili area is erosion ravaged zone. The federal government should please come to the aid of Ndi Igbo to ameliorate the situation as that Onitsha-Owerri road is an important federal road and the cost of repairing the damage is too much for Anambra state to bear.

No environmental scientist or any expert will answer this bro. This forum is strictly for tribalistic, religious and political battles.

Our southeast brothers must stand up to all challenges confronting the region. They need strong political arsenal. Even if they want a sovereign state they need to start with building that region and make it attractive for investors. Then they can woo international organizations into buying into their agitations and a need for referandom. Killings and destruction of properties won't take them anywhere.

Southeast needs development not war.
