Don’t Legalise Prostitution – Fashola

The wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, on Tuesday urged the National Assembly not to succumb to the pressure to legalise prostitution in the country.

Fashola said calls for legalisation of prostitution were condemnable, as such a move could have a grave impact on women in the society.

She spoke in Lagos at a briefing on the 11th National Women Conference scheduled to hold from October 18 to 20. The event will be organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials.

Fashola, who is also the COWLSO Chairman, explained that prostitution could be used as an easy way out by desperate young ladies, adding the such actions could ruin their lives. She urged the National Assembly not support any policy that could encourage such a move.

She said, “Those who engage in prostitution are the persons who do not want to use their God-given talent. We will pray against it. We’ll do our best to ensure that our country does not degenerate into legalising prostitution.

“I won’t want my child or any child to go into it. We in COWLSO will help save the situation. If we love ourselves, we should not legalise prostitution.”Fashola said the conference, which will be held at the Eko Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, would also be used to discuss issues concerning women and ways to support the state government in education and health.

“The conference with the theme, ‘Women: How Relevant Are We?”, would be declared open by the Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi while the proceeds from the conference could be targeted at completion of the Retirement Villa project which started a few years ago,” she said.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, last week sponsored a bill at the Senate, asking the upper legislature body to consider the possibility of legalising prostitution in the country.

What is happening to Ikeja , they have the highest number of brothels in Lagos , the government officials know there and why they cannot go there and destroy those brothels like they did to market on close roads

so you agree, that even though it's not legal it still happens? not legalizing it only affects and puts the poor at risk. if it was legal they could be mandated to take STD/HIV tests and they would also be subject to paying taxes.

It's all hypocrisy. most politicians use escorts. difference is they don't pick them off the streets.

Well said.
Legalising prostitution would,
1)Ensure they all get HIV/STD testing.
2)They would all be registered and have licenses, and pay tax.
3)Cut out pimps grin
4)Eliminate abuse of young underaged girls by pimps.

Having said that it would never pass in Nigeria,Nigerians are not culturally civilized enough to handle it.Perhaps in 50 years or more, even americans are stil not advanced enough to do it, the only place in the US were it is legal is in Nevada.

Please tell me that you are not suggesting it not be legalized for the reasons you list above?

Should be legalized in my view. So the industry can be taxed and regulated, and all participants can be protected from robbery, STDs, and even ritual killings.
They can ban ATL advertising and outlaw any any overt soliciting, just like it has been done for the tobacco industry.

And no, I'm not saying this tongue in cheek. grin

In my own opinion, lagaliseing it ave much disadvantage than advantages e.g, there will be nomore boyfrnd and girlfrnd stuff, which eventually leads to marriage, and also the rate of broken relationship or home will be in high rate. Because majority of husband will prone to cheaten. Most of the ladies that are lazy or dat come 4rm poor background will end up in prostitution. Later the level of educated and responsible ladies will drastically decrease. So i oppose the motion.

Mrs Fashola - Bad belle.

LOL, Bad belle for what?

What has Senator Ike Ekweremadu achieved since he became a senator, the will make Fashola Bad belle him.

Legalizing Prostitution  will give theses Senator power to dehumanize our sisters and mothers.

Because women will now be in the commodity market.

And it is not the business of federal government to Legalise Prostitution, every state should be allow to implement the law that suits them.

Prostitution Law should be State and not a Federal matter as in America where a form of prostitution is legal in Nevada state.

It should be legalized and while they are at it they should legalize marijuana. It would ease all the anxiety that Nigerians experience on a daily basis. They should also increase the taxes on churches because those guys are criminals. So there it is.

Making anything illegal NEVER helps to stop it's spread rather it makes it more expensive and increases demand due to it's "scarceness" (ask drug barons and they'll tell you).
