Not just skyscrapers.. Even some beautiful houses in towns are having fences taller than the houses. These are structures that are supposed to make the place beautiful and eye-catching.

Why are Most buildings in Nigeria especially commercial towers fenced off?

From the Downtown of Lagos, To The most Affluent areas of Abuja, They all have something in Common, All the Skyscrapers are all fenced off and not open to the public!

This make the city look ugly, In modern society, Skyscrapers down floors are rented out for restaurant, Boutiques, e.t.c, Which makes window-shopping possible!

Photo 2: Eko hotel towers, Lagos

Stop saying nonsense..

Those areas are commercial areas with apartments and not residential areas.

Billionaires and millionaires abroad also fence their houses.

The Nigerian cities with fences are more beautiful than eu:ropean cities without fences.

Imagine renting the down floor out to restaurants as you opined. That's a good place for angry jihadists to drive in trucks and bring down the whole building in protest to a perceived jewish guy who farted in front of a holy tree in Saudi Arabia.

Because we are in a zoo... truth be told private building can do whatever they want with their building.

I'm more worried about our roads, not gutter, no maintenance, poor quality roads built with sand and mud etc...

There are some streets that you can't even take a walk at night, all because most of the buildings in the street has been fenced off, Before 8pm in the night, It will look like a ghost town!!

But by renting out the down floors of those
buildings to restaurant and boutique e.t.c, It will make it more lively at night time!
Our society would be a better place to live in if we had more people that reason like you and had less people that reason like Mannabbqgrillz, Helinues, Yarimo, FreeStuffsNG and that punk ass, IconicR.

Abuja is even worse, There's like 15 meters distance from the main building to the main road, It shouldn't be like this!

All these makes the street ugly

What's the recommended distance

I know most corporate Bodies like to fence off their buildings for security reason, But with a CCTV camera placed at every corners of the street, security issues will be curbed to some extent

And besides, if down floors are rented out, There will be so much activities in the streets at night which will some how curb security issues to some extent too, it's easy to steal in a lonely street at night than a lively street with people everywhere!!
You are right on the traffic and nightlife no-fence can bring, but in the face of threat to security like suicide bombing etc. the fence being a barricade for control and restriction can help deter or slow down the attack, better still, make it easy to detect the threat before it gets closer.
I believe that as general security improves in the country and with deployment of modern security systems, soon such structures won't require fencing.

All the countries you were comparing, which of them is their police stations fenced and which of them does their police stations close in the night?

And all the hoodlums and criminals caught on camera in Nigeria what happened to them?

I think it has to do with mentality.

Every house in Nigeria is fenced but many banks don't even have fence.

So, I don't think it's about security. I think it's about a warped mentality and following a trend.

Will that yeye fence stop armed robbers from trespassing?

It's about privacy.

The fence prevents people from entering your compound, turning your compound into waste dumpsite, turning it into illegal toilet. e.t.c.

You and Raydos are not wise.

The same reason one slowpoke would agitate for the masses to be given a chance to breathe (just breath o😭).
Nigerians are the most class cautious people ever. The rich oppress the poor and the poor oppress theirselves.

You cant get into those places looking tattered. No be naija man say "shoe get size". The poor man may be considered in other parts of the world (as regards welfare) but Naija man find it easier to exploit the poor and also oppress them.

Bitter but it's the truth.

This is how modern society look like, I watch a video of a foreign YouTuber recently, who complained about this in his first ever visit to Nigeria!

He was so surprised, every building is fenced off!

Window shopping makes street look beautiful,

Affluent areas can afford all the security to keep this place safe, at night, But it seems like they just don't give a damn, They all okay with their sub-standard tower!

The major reason why they buildings you call modern are not fenced is because of economy of space.

I hope you know that the white house is fenced and can afford CCTV cameras and more.

Don't mind those guys, when they build their own house, they'll understand better. Security is the foremost consideration when building a house in Nigeria. If you leave your house open, one day people will test the security apparatus you have there...

You're right.

By the way, we have the same gates and fences in ex-European colonies of the southern hemisphere like Nigeria and India, because that was how the colonialists built their homes to protect themselves from the masses. When they left, the elite of these nations continued the same pattern and mindset of protection from the masses..

BEFORE colonial rule, we know that houses were built in Nigeria without even front doors, never mind gates. Dutch and Portuguese visitors to 15th century Benin city recorded this in their numerous accounts. The idea of somebody entering your house to steal or rob you was unheard of before the colonial invasions.

True....An English sailor to nigeria in the 18th century made this remark. The houses were left wide open with no doors and fence.

Thats a Big lie. Houses always had doors in Africa.

Prime properties are expensive. If they rent the ground floor to restaurants and boutiques, they can't sell #500 Amala there.

The fencing of properties in Nigeria is a reflection of the Nigerian society.

Even today in some of the rural areas, you can leave your wares on the road or market as a seller and go home knowing that nobody will touch it.

African culture was highly civilized before these whites invaded with their guns and bombs.

If you have it in affluent areas and I have a vehicle - a Jalopy , I can still visit being a riff -raft. Either you allow all or allow none. Plus some areas are zoned industrial so technically nobody would visit during the evening to make it happening.

The reason it’s fenced is purely a security measure. The Nigeria factor people will break in and steal.
People steal cables from a functioning transformer. CCTV ain’t gonna stop nobody from stealing

That's a fictional story.

If there were no doors in houses in Africa then there won't be indigenous words for door in the indigenous languages.

Why would Eu:ropeans sail through the oceans when they could just land in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria e.t.c or whatever those countries were called then and head downwards to West Africa.

No eu:ropean sailed to West Africa.

You better stop believing their fictional stories and fictional books they are fake stories.

This is a 19th century British colonial drawing claiming an execution in Benin City, and showing its houses with no front doors:

As the UK Guardian Newspaper reports,

''When the Portuguese first “discovered” Benin City in 1485, they were stunned to find this vast kingdom made of hundreds of interlocked cities and villages in the middle of the African jungle. They called it the “Great City of Benin”.... Indeed, they classified Benin City as one of the most beautiful and best planned cities in the world.

In 1691, the Portuguese ship captain Lourenco Pinto observed: “Great Benin, where the king resides, is larger than Lisbon; all the streets run straight and as far as the eye can see. The houses are large, especially that of the king, which is richly decorated and has fine columns. The city is wealthy and industrious. It is so well governed that theft is unknown and the people live in such security that they have no doors to their houses.”

In contrast, London at the same time is described by Bruce Holsinger, professor of English at the University of Virginia, as being a city of “thievery, prostitution, murder, bribery and a thriving black market made the medieval city ripe for exploitation by those with a skill for the quick blade or picking a pocket”.''
