The failure of the criminal justice system, period.
When crime cannot be effectively tackled and wrongdoers punished there is no deterrent to the threat to life and property.
People will resort to self help.
Fencing is self help.

The down floors can be rented out to boutique, Restaurant e.t.c which will make Window shopping possible and will also make the street a fun place at night!

Take a look at this streets in Berlin, Germany

Fencing a property is an additional cost no one is happy to engage in, but when you consider the security situation in the country, you will agree that it is a necessary evil.

This is a 19th century British colonial drawing claiming an execution in Benin City, and showing its houses with no front doors:

As the UK Guardian Newspaper reports,

''When the Portuguese first “discovered” Benin City in 1485, they were stunned to find this vast kingdom made of hundreds of interlocked cities and villages in the middle of the African jungle. They called it the “Great City of Benin”.... Indeed, they classified Benin City as one of the most beautiful and best planned cities in the world.

In 1691, the Portuguese ship captain Lourenco Pinto observed: “Great Benin, where the king resides, is larger than Lisbon; all the streets run straight and as far as the eye can see. The houses are large, especially that of the king, which is richly decorated and has fine columns. The city is wealthy and industrious. It is so well governed that theft is unknown and the people live in such security that they have no doors to their houses.

In contrast, London at the same time is described by Bruce Holsinger, professor of English at the University of Virginia, as being a city of “thievery, prostitution, murder, bribery and a thriving black market made the medieval city ripe for exploitation by those with a skill for the quick blade or picking a pocket”.''

Fake drawing and fake story.

You're forgetting that it's eu:ropeans that created ho:llywood which is all about creating fictional stories and drawings.

In the past when there was no video or cameras.. it was drawings, stories and written text that was used to tell fictional stories.

The fear of Boko and bandits make them to fence it
Re: Why Do Affluent Areas In Nigeria Do This? by toxtimmy: 10:38pm On Sep 18, 2023
Even with tall fences thieves are visiting them... if the government is for the he people there will be a big reduction in fear for thieves via buildings ng fences.

What about the iron rods people put on their windows and doors? Even though they have fence.

NeckingNgulping:
Not just skyscrapers.. Even some beautiful houses in towns are having fences taller than the houses. These are structures that are supposed to make the place beautiful and eye-catching.

Why are Most buildings in Nigeria especially commercial towers fenced off?

From the Downtown of Lagos, To The most Affluent areas of Abuja, They all have something in Common, All the Skyscrapers are all fenced off and not open to the public!

This make the city look ugly, In modern society, Skyscrapers down floors are rented out for restaurant, Boutiques, e.t.c, Which makes window-shopping possible!

This is an American neighborhood, they prefer greenery instead of fences!

Is America the capital of extreme poverty paupers with the highest number of children out of school like our country

When we are serious, we will get our governors to hire teachers to make sure that every child is in free schools. Is this not the foundation for shared prosperity and collective wellbeing

I know most corporate Bodies like to fence off their buildings for security reason, But with a CCTV camera placed at every corners of the street, security issues will be curbed to some extent

And besides, if down floors are rented out, There will be so much activities in the streets at night which will some how curb security issues to some extent too, it's easy to steal in a lonely street at night than a lively street with people everywhere!!
In Nigeria they won't do that because workers at the building want to continue sneaking in at night and stealing from their place of work without notice. There is a lot of criminal activities in from workers in those kind of building that goes unnotice and they want it secluded.

When you build yours, then you leave it open just as you suggest. Mind you, be ready to have maximum securities on standby also, else you will lose the place to yours, criminals, armed robbers e.t.c. TBH You can never satisfy a Nigerian! They will not only rob customers who are coming to buy things from the shops downfloor, but invade the entire buildings..

With the way it's built now with fences around, whatever carries you in the compound must be for a reason and escape routes have been reduced to almost none!

First of all, we lack discipline. Secondly, we lack coordination!

Nigeria is still a developing nation, and so many things has to be put in place, before letting your guard down.

Millions of people are hungry, and are ready to steal when the opportunity presents itself.

The mindset matters. Right from the projects conceptualization.

Having supermarket and shopping centres infused into skyscrapers is a way to beautify the city.

Attract people to the building and get secondary and tertiary funds for the building's maintenance and the likes.

The also clime matters too, but for me I'll say Nigerian rich and affluent likes to keep people off. If you think otherwise, how many of your friends who made it before you chose not to de-friend you. Let's start from here.

What use are security cameras when Nigeria don’t have a database?

It's called affluent areas for a reason, With CCTV camera, All these issues can be curbed!
CCTV without good biometrics data base system is useless.

Once u change houses abroad or leave your state, it reflects in their database even if it hasn't reflected electronically yet.

Most of our criminal acts in Nigeria is tied more to hunger, poverty and a battle to live like human beings.

You're right.

By the way, we have the same gates and fences in ex-European colonies of the southern hemisphere like Nigeria and India, because that was how the colonialists built their homes to protect themselves from the masses. When they left, the elite of these nations continued the same pattern and mindset of protection from the masses..

BEFORE colonial rule, we know that houses were built in Nigeria without even front doors, never mind gates. Dutch and Portuguese visitors to 15th century Benin city recorded this in their numerous accounts. The idea of somebody entering your house to steal or rob you was unheard of before the colonial invasions.

Yep… the colonialists started GRAs, Ikoyis, VIs… to separate them the masses.
