Edogun is a word that's rooted in Edo culture and tradition for thousands of years even from the Ogiso era. This word was corrupted by the Ikas and the Aniochas to Odogun and transmitted to the Igbos through Onicha. Another word that got to the Igbos through the Ikas and Aniochas through Onitcha is Ewere which the Igbos call Awele. Before you argue, try and research this.

I'm an Ika man and I understand where most of our words and cultures came from
I repeat, don't claim what you don't know. Igbo and Bini share a lot of words in common. Eg
Igbo- Odogwu- Warrior
Bini- Edogun- Warrior
Igbo- Ukwu- Great/Big
Bini- Uku- Great
Igbo- Okuko- Cockerel
Bini- Okuko- Cockerel
Igbo- Oma- Good
Bini- Oma- Good
Igbo- Ogbe- Quarters/Locale
Bini- Ogbe- Quarters
Igbo- Ikwikwi- Owl
Bini- Okuikui- Owl
Igbo- Ugbo - Farm
Bini- Ugbo- Farm

There are many more of such shared words. Some words were equally borrowed by both langugages but Odogwu isn't one of such.

Una too dey talk rubbish igbo language was not only spoken but written too in nsịbịdị hieroglyphs

There's no comparison here

Igbo language is far widely spoken language

If na lie show me any style of writing Edo people uses

Ika are more igboid than edo I can literally hear almost everything an ika man speaks so cannot be Said of an edo man

The likes of Okowa and others have come out to Identify as being igboid group
Of course we know they have spent a long time with Binis as neighbors and subjects so yes they'll have some things borrowed from Binis

Igbos and Binis and even Yorubas share some words in common

As for odogwu there it's deeply rooted igbo mythology
There's an igbo proverb that says

Ihe dị iche na odogwu na dike bu na odogwu siri ike nwekwa uche

Odogwu is from the Edo word - Edogun/Odogun.

Odogun is one of the most powerful olotu in my community in Delta.

Igbos popularized it no doubt

Odogwu is not Edo but Igbo. During the olden days an Igbo man whose name was Odogwu was employed by Oba of Benin as a mercenary fighter so it is possible he was deitified as honor for his war successes. His descendants founded some Igbo communities in present day Delta State.

That is reality. Edos borrowed that word from the name of the Igbo warrior. As for this topic the most popular African word in 2023 is "Nyash" not "Odogwu".

Your name is Ehikwe which is attempt to twist Chikwe knowing fully well that Ehi is Edo version of Chi but the Edo has "kue" not "kwe". Osakue is Edo while Osakwe is Igbo.

Owa oral tradition has it that Odogu angrily left Ute-Okpu and settled near the present site of Oyibu village because his brother, Okpu, inherited everything after his father’s death, while Odogu was away serving the Oba of Benin in wars.

There's no Igbo warrior called edogun. The title is a hereditary title that's reserved for certain royal families. Odogun is a very high ranking chief only below the likes of Iyase. His praise name is abigege or Abi, in my community we salute him as Ebi

There is no chi in Ika. We use Oselobue and also chukwu for God although Oselobue is the creator in Ika cosmology, chukwu is quite popular in present day but in terms of personal god/guardian it's exclusively ehi. I'll try to educate you because you're not Ika

There's "Chi" in Ika and Chikwe is a common Ika surname. Ika bu Igbo. Orisakeruwa, Olisakeluwa, Olisebuluwa or Osebuluwa was the old Igbo name for God in corest Igbo areas between Imo and Anambra. Chukwu was introduced by the Aros across Igboland more recently and wasn't of use anywhere in Igboland than Arochukwu until then. Chi and Orisa are different.

It's a derivative of chi ukwu but the concept of chi didn't filter into Ika lingo like chukwu did. When an Ika man say chukwu, he's not doing that in comparison to any other God it's just a term for God generally. God is a general term but the chi/ehi is more connected to the belief-system hence the difficulty in infiltrating

No, they're not different. Odogun is a chief in charge of warfare in ancient Edo empire. The title still exist in several kingdoms that made up the ancient Edo empire and as you might already known - some of these kingdoms have relationship with the Igbos of the South East.
Ehikwe22, I like your insights on this topic.

The etymology of the word Odogwu is of pure Yoruba origin via the
Igalas or Edos who had contacts with the Delta North, Anambra, and
Enugu axis.

Olori Ogun means "head of warriors." Olori means leader or head and Ogun means war in Yoruba language.

That loan word is got from "Ogun" and found it's way most definitely via the Igalas (Igala is classified as a
Yoruboid language) who also have
Yoruba bloodlines in the entire
Igala ancestral family tree.

According to the late Attah of Igala kingdom, HRM Michael Ameh Oboni, in a 2016 Saturday Punch interview, migrants from the
Wukari (Jukun) area in Taraba moved along the Benue River and fused with a significant number of Yorubas and Edos at the river confluence area in the Kogi axis. Hence, the fusion of Yoruba words and words from ethnicities that fused to what you call Igala today.

There are indigenous Igalas and Igala-associated or mixed communities in Delta North such as Ebu, Illah, Asaba, Okpanam. Anambra North and Onitsha has
Igala roots (forming their quarters there), and Northern Enugu State has Igala ethnic presence for over 500 years.

"SIMILAR Yoruba/Igala words"
1] Egungun (Masquerade in Yoruba) is spelled Egwugwu by Igalas and that got into Ibo language as a loan word.

2] Ogun (In Yoruba language, it can mean war, medicine) is spelled as
Ogwu in Igala and used as a loan word in Ibo. E.g. Money medicine or "Ogun Owo" in Yoruba is "Ogwu Ego" in Ibo!

3] Ogede is plantain and bananain
Yoruba is exactly Ogede in Igala.

4] Akuko is cock in Yoruba and is Akuko in Igala language and is a loan word in Ibo.

5] Omi is water in Yoruba, and is also Omi in Igala but is called Mmiri in Ibo.

6] Ifa (the Yoruba religion ) is
Yoruba and Igalas call it Ifa too but is corrupted and called "Afa" by the Ibos via it's introduction to the Nri area through the same Igala contact. It was the arrival of
Igala into the Nri area that led to the introduction of the kingship system in Nri. Prior to that, the aborigenes had no monarchical system as exemplified by the Eze Nri.

The Igala influence on Anambra, Enugu, and Delta States was very significant for over 500 years as to have caused the entry of Yoruba/Yoruboid loan words into the central Ibo language. A little close to 40 percent of Igala words are of Yoruboid origin. Same with
Itsekiri who also have major Yoruba bloodlines (of 3 subclans of Ilaje, Ijebu and Ife) in addition to Edo immigration from the Binis in the 1480s through Prince Ginuwa into Ode Itsekiri where he and his exiled team met Chief Lenuwa and his people of Ijebu origin, and Ginuwa settled in their midst and married some of the Ijebu women.

In Anambra, Igala communities such as Igbokenyi exis. Aguleri also has a strong migratory Igala ancestry presence from about 400 years ago from where they interacted with the aborigenes.

Even the popular RED chieftaincy cap was first introduced into the
Nsukka area of Enugu State from Igalaland by the Igalas and the wearing of the red cap then spread out hence, it is NOT indigenous to the Ibo aborigenes.

All these have strong verifiable sources online and offline.

linking Chukwu with Arochukwu is just funny
Arochukwu is a confederation which didn't even extend to even Delta

Which is made of "Aro" ( people) and Chukwu(almighty God) Arochukwu means people of God
There wouldn't be the word Arochukwu without Chukwu

Chukwu is chi-ukwu in short

Igbos believe there are smaller chi's (god's) the supreme God is "chi" and "ukwu" (Supreme) in short Chukwu

It's common to share same words with your neighbours claiming ownership of certain word is an insult to any rational mind

Ever heard of "Language convergence " ?

It's a phenomenon that leads to the problem of not knowing the origin of a word because the speaker wants to sound like thier Neighbour

And it's easy to do that because both Igbos , Yorubas and edo Infact all southern Nigeria belongs to the Niger-Congo A group of languages
We have same linguistic origin so it's comon to see convergence of certain words

So coming out to say people loan a word from you is an insult to rational and educated mind

Stop typing rubbish. Next time mind your business. This thread is about shared words between Igbo and Bini. No one mentioned yerobber here.

Una too lie Tue!

Archeology and everything tells otherwise!

Have stuff longer than most of your ancestors

The nsude pyramids outdates most of your kingdom

The Igbo ụkwụ bronze work are the first if it's kind In west Africa

Igbos are the first people to do bronze works in Nigeria

Igbos read and write in nsibidi hieroglyphs

I hate when people lie

It's common to share same words with your neighbours claiming ownership of certain word is an insult to any rational mind

Ever heard of "Language convergence " ?

It's a phenomenon that leads to the problem of not knowing the origin of a word because the speaker wants to sound like thier Neighbour

And it's easy to do that because both Igbos , Yorubas and edo Infact all southern Nigeria belongs to the Niger-Congo A group of languages
We have same linguistic origin so it's comon to see convergence of certain words

So coming out to say people loan a word from you is an insult to rational and educated mind

There are certain shared words that are almost impossible to tell it's origin maybe as a result of it being a word from a common ancestor - a proto-word. And as you rightly mentioned, language diffusion and convergence is a thing.

But in some cases, telling the origin of a language is a bit easier if the that word hold some very significant power in one language than the other. For example, Ewere and Odogun are two words that the Edos and Igbos share in common that as an Ika man I'm certain they're of Edo origin. Till tomorrow we celebrate the IbiEwere during our igue celebration and also check the Edo dictionary below

linking Chukwu with Arochukwu is just funny
Arochukwu is a confederation which didn't even extend to even Delta

Which is made of "Aro" ( people) and Chukwu(almighty God) Arochukwu means people of God
There wouldn't be the word Arochukwu without Chukwu

Chukwu is chi-ukwu in short

Igbos believe there are smaller chi's (god's) the supreme God is "chi" and "ukwu" (Supreme) in short Chukwu

Correct yourself abeg

I know this very well. Chukwu is the God of Aros. Chi is not smaller God but guardian spirit that comes in different forms. Anywhere you see Umuchukwu it means they are descended from Aro and Aro influence went beyond Igboland not just by settlements but the gospel of Chukwu which spread like wildfire.

Edogun is not Odogwu. Edogun is Edo and Odogwu is Igbo. Very soon you will say Ego is Igho or Obasi is Abasi.

How do I know that Edogun is the same as Odogwu? I'm am Ika man. The Binis have the Edogun title for the the war chief and we call it Odogun. Is that a coincidences? Of course no. The praise name of Edogun is Abigege or Abi and also Ebi and the praise name of the Odogun of my clan is Ebi and play exactly the same role, exactly the same salutation and exactly the same hair cut.

Do you want to tell me that Odogun is different from Odogwu because of the difference in spelling? Ika is known to be a nasal language and we reflect the inflection in our spelling following the Edo pattern.

Ika is Igbo which is why there's difference between Edogun and Odogu . That's also why there's difference between Obasi and Abasi even though Umuahia and Itu use it for God. Umuahia is Igbo while Itu is Ibibio..
