The most popular African word in the world today happens to be an Igbo word: Odogwu. Do you know what that word means?

I hear it among Kenyans, South Africans, Ghanaians, Cameroonians, and all across Africa, the US, Canada, and Europe

Lol. That may be the original meaning. But that is not the meaning of the word being globalized in 2023

Odogwu is from the Edo word - Edogun/Odogun.

Odogun is one of the most powerful olotu in my community in Delta.

Igbos popularized it no doubt

It will also surprise you to know that "Igwe" has also become popular in some East African countries due to Nollywood. A guy from Zimbabwe said if you call someone an Igwe in Zimbabwe, people begin to view that person as someone who is wealthy and well-to-do. When asked how they knew the word, he said they hear the word alot in Nigerian movies and have now adopted it somehow.

Odogwu is an Igbo word. Odogun is different from Odogwu. The W and N make the difference

No, they're not different. Odogun is a chief in charge of warfare in ancient Edo empire. The title still exist in several kingdoms that made up the ancient Edo empire and as you might already known - some of these kingdoms have relationship with the Igbos of the South East.

Please stop creating confusion. Odogun is different from Odogwu. The word trending today is Odogwu (Igbo), not Odogun.

You seem slow. Odogun is the Edo spelling of the same word that the Igbo Igbonized and popularized. The problem with you guys is that you don't like to learn

Odogwu remains an igbo word while Odogun remains an Edo word.

Oba to the Yorubas and Binis means King but to Igbos, Oba means barn.

are you dumb? Your example makes absolutely no sense in this context. We're not talking about homophones or homonyms here, we're talking about words that's shared by different ethnic groups. Do you know a word called "Etymology"? The level of dumbness on this thread is astonishing

Your stupidity is first class...... Odogwu is an igbo word independent of whatever is crawling around your brain, since civility is far from your upbringing.

If it is a shared word, why are you now faulting him?
Odogwu is Igbo and Odogwu is the popular word today. Edogun is a variant of Odogwu and it is common among the Edo people.
The same way Igbos called the Cockerel 'Okuko' and the Binis call it 'Okuko' too.
There are actually more shared words so you should not be in haste to claim what you don't know.

Edogun is a word that's rooted in Edo culture and tradition for thousands of years even from the Ogiso era. This word was corrupted by the Ikas and the Aniochas to Odogun and transmitted to the Igbos through Onicha. Another word that got to the Igbos through the Ikas and Aniochas through Onitcha is Ewere which the Igbos call Awele. Before you argue, try and research this.

I'm an Ika man and I understand where most of our words and cultures came from
