Give Up Your American Or European Citizenship?
« on: October 22, 2011, 11:04 PM »
Hi guys,
the question is how much is your foreign citizenship worth?
what would your current country of residence give you for you to move back home?
or, wat level of s_hit would you take from a govt or people to stay in their country?
wat's the breaking point before you decide to go home?
how much would u ask for if u were asked to go back to nigeria?
phew!!
your turn lets here it.

i thot i should modify the post, my aim was to get people to reminiscence about past life and
see if u miss it. e.g wen watching daddy showkey on youtube i cant help laughing.

are there things in naija that u would like to have at your current location?

e.g like the eyo festival of lagos, would want it were u live.

Pushed to the wall with your second citizenship could mean, for example, fighting a war (as a soldier) you don't believe in. Being used as a political pawn.
In a case where you find your new citizenship taking you to awkward places, I believe we should not let our emotions drive us crazy. Go with the s_heatty situation? Maybe not. Probably relocate again? Maybe yes.

There are sure aspects of home we'd miss. Infrastructural underdevelopment and man-made stress no, no.

kobojunkie so you are one of those crazy people biking at 7am in the morning  (especially on saturdays) that i see on the bike lanes , when driving on lakeshore drive going downtown. lol. i researched that phenomenon too cuz i was curious. i was thinking these are prolly just a bunch of treehuggers doing what treehuggers do, saving the planet by reducing their carbon print. so every motning i drive to the irving park beach parking area and observe. come to find out most of these fools drive over there in there huge SUVs. and then pull out the bike from their cars, then bike all over the city, then get back to their cars, throw the  bike in the back and then drive home  cheesy

Obviously you've lived in obodo- America for a really long time and you've lost your Africanness. You've come to accept loneliness as a way of life. Glad you adjusted to it quite well, for now,  but the rest of us still love that connection.

We miss what makes us human; the touch, the sound, the interdependence, the emotional connection, the smiles, the cries, the daily grind of love, hate, friendship, the constant interruption by families and relatives, the tease, the unsolicited words of encouragement etc

That is what being human is all about. That is why we remain in touch with our humanity and the feelings of others. It is the reason we dont engage in endless loops of argument on an anonymous forum. The reason we dont take ourselves too seriously. It is the reason we express our emotions appropriately when people die, get married or say things we disagree with or agree with. It is the reason we dont hold malice against people that may have offended us in the past.

Kobo, its time you get back to your root, go spend sometime in your village, with people that love you and can remind you of what you really are and not what you wish you were.

Its  great to be in constant connection with your family, friends and most importantly your root. We arent made for isolation. It is actually beneficial to your psyche to experience a close knit, hot, dysfunctional, loving, family-like type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down.

Kobo, it is up to you.
thanks dear,
i dnt know wat all the wahala is about, i was only expressing my feeling on the day, doesnt mean am suicidal all hate everything on the planet. and wat did i get a single person saying, ride a bike, (where do i put my crew while am on the bike grin ) join a cooking class, shebi na d cooking tire me wey i dey complain.
it all in good humour.

arsenefc:

LOL

Why are we all against Kobo.

Kobo is the most hated NL'er, it seems

Kobo, I can make all these hate go away, if you agree to do 'janglover epomoto' on my ding dong.

son of god is the most hated NLer, have u seen his previous post? SHOCKING!!
frosbel:

Shocking !!!!!!!!!

And this is supposed to be an arena for enlightened debate and knowledge share.

Disgrace, just look at all the abuse flying around.

I want to apologise for my part, i was very upset becos i didnt know why someone wud attack me in such a way. i didnt think there was anything in my post to provoke such hatred. well, am done.
Kobojunkie:

I took to biking because I could no longer jog or walk. I used to walk about 16 miles round the path back in columbus, but in 2009, I found that I had torn cartilage and it became painful to run or walk. But Biking came to the rescue. The distance from my place to the Library I go to each day is about 4.3 miles, so I hop on my Schwinn Surburban (I love that machine) each day to ride there and back. Takes about 20 minutes.

I think anyone who lives in the city, and has to commute can easily do 40 miles of more a week if he/she chooses to bike it. I live about 4.3 miles from where I go everyday to work and hangout, and those 20 minutes each way on my bike is time for me to free my mind, relax and enjoy the breeze, right before I hit the books/work, and then the 20 minutes back is my time to de-stress, stretch the muscles and enjoy the breeze/wind. Also time to work out all the eba of the day before. lol

I know people who bike twice that each week actually. Biking from a place like Irving Park to downtown is easily 7 miles each way, and that is about 14 miles a day. Add to that errands and what nots on the weekend.

I don't see how being raised in close knit family and what not has anything to do with what you are implying here. I was raised in a close knit family myself and I am not falling apart in the way the @Poster described. I enjoyed my family, and I still do that, but I don't have any attachment issues to deal with since I am well adjusted and confident that the distance between us DOES NOT IMPLY less love or hugs for me at the end of the day. CONFESSION: my mum is in the next room and we are like best of friends, but when she is not here, I am OK.  I mean that one was raised in a close knit ground should not be reason for one to break to pieces when one has to move to a far away land. One needs to be able to take what one learnt in the family situation, and use it to one's advantage when one is away. Create a close-knit group with those around you and continue enjoying your life.

Biking is not abut drawing close to others  . . .  it is actually my way of getting more confident with myself, no matter how many people are around or not around. Those minutes everyday, each way on my bike, I get to listen to the silence, accept and LOVE IT. It is good. Ofcourse when I get to my destination, I go back to my yapping  . ,  lol

Happiness should not be based on where you are, or the number of people(family members, friends) around you at any time. If you find that you cannot sit alone, all by yourself and still be happy, then you probably need to go talk to someone about that. One should learn to be happy wherever one is. And being comfortable never hurts.

it depends on your personality, emotion etc. i will not apologise for being me. i grew up in a very large and happy environment, my sister was married in nearby city we wud just be sitting on a saturday evening and she and her hubby would walkin saying they are traveling to maybe lagos for a friend's wedding and would drop their kid's no questions asked. i miss all that.

my best friend is getting married in warri and all my friends are there, they called me eeryone excited and talking at the same time. when they dropped the phone it all fell silent, and i felt bad so i thot i will just air my views.

arsenefc:

E no go better for the first person to stop.

You guys are on a roll, keep it up.

That is incredibly hilarious.

I have to admit you did score a point on this one. The problem is that you arent any better. Same same!
E GO BETTER FOR ALL OF US IJN.

I would, IF and only IF, Nigeria was safe, and if good medical care was widely available. . A lot of people WANT to move back home, but to what? to Lagos gridlock? or  no electricity? all the chaos? and when u complain people look at u like you are crazy. they are so used to that way of life, yet despite these things I thoroughly enjoy Nigeria, imagine how awesome it would be if things were better.
somebody posted his car got stolen a few days ago and people mocked the age of the car, REALLY? really these are the kinds of thots that foster corruption. we are all guilty of it even if we don't realize it. we put undue demand on people instead of commending them for living within their means.

you are wrong, the problem is, the rich people in nigeria have NOTHING to do with thier money. we don't create enough products, this why you see ngerians travel and spend INSANE amounts of things we can't even fathom, we can go to the mall every weekend and spend a little here and a little there. they have to save it (or buy in Nigeria at an even more insane price and less choice) and spend it all at once when travelling. that's where the disparity comes in.
plus u also can't outshow. my dad refused to paint the peeling paint on the house so "thieves" wouldn't think there was money,

don't let appearances fool you. unless the person is an aiyiriolari, chances are , they don't spend outlandishly.

Could not have put it better myself, grin
There is no class mobility in Nigeria, and no middle class you have a huge chasm between the very wealthy and hordes of working poor.My uncle still has his house unpainted and locks his cars in his garage at night, using public transport most of the time, just ridiculous.
No way Im giving up citizenship in exchange for sleeping at night with one eye open cool

I disagree because a couple of years ago, I used to offer up the same excuses you apply above to justify my 'choice' to continue to wallow in 'grief' - my leaving  life in Nigeria for America.  I think what concerns me more is how this may effect kids? I still have nightmares of a time in my childhood when I felt my mum had other priorities in her life . . . .   Children, as we all should know since we were all kids not too long ago, are very sensitive, and know when the one they love does not seem CONTENT with having just them around.

My best friends are mostly all married as well. I got invitations but they understood that I could not be there. I got videos of the event, and sent them my greetings -- Will visit them when next I am down there. They do not hate me because I did not show up on their wedding day. We will not ceize to be friends as a result -- usually good friendships transcend all that.

I am not discouraging you from having and keeping close ties, and I am certainly not saying you should take up cooking or biking. That is what works for me -- I used to be active in Nigeria and so that is my personality and way of enjoying my environment and life.  What I am probably suggesting is you talking to someone about how you can better manage those ties so they do not overtake you so much. There is a reason why in the Bible(I am guessing you claim Christianity) that the Bible talks of the woman leaving her father and mother(this includes all else) to go to her husband. Essentially, you are to manage those feelings in a way that it does not affect your new life.

You are not alone in this, and so I hope you do not construe this as an attack or an attempt to make you feel small. I am only glad I was able to realize those feelings are NOT in anyway normal, and then worked to overcome them. Glad to help another who may want to overcome them with possible ideas that might help. Many of us, when we move to a new state/country/village/make big changes in our lives, question our decisions and long for the old. We forget the reasons why we left and start to create fantastical pictures of how great life used to be. We often allow this to take hold of our lives, and sometimes you meet people who have lived in America, or some other country for 20 or more years but their heart still not at home. I saw that in a 60 something old man I met down in Atlanta on a work trip some years ago and immediately reprocessed my life after that experience. The man was essentially what you would consider a bitter old man -- he left Nigeria more than 30 years before but Nigeria never really left him. His conversation were of things in Nigeria, life in Nigeria, attitudes in Nigeria. If you spent an hour of two with him, you would hear of everyone else's life in Nigeria but not even a minute of his. When I pushed him to talk of himself, he explained how all he did was wake up, go to work, call his friends in Nigeria to catch up -- on and on. That is not how it ought to be as that takes its toll on our minds, body and soul.

i think you completely missed my point. she was stating how everyone she knew even the rich have fallen on hard times etc etc. so i says , did you go see your friends in those 'rich areas i mentioned', my point being, i am sure she only saw her friends who supposedly are now poor. personally i am not hung up on materialism.

KOBO does not do 40miles, she's exaggerating again as usual, 40miles? I will go to DC from VA 3X, chei, Kobo stop lying now, How fast does you travel on this bike eh?
Re: Give Up Your American Or European Citizenship? by ektbear: 8:49pm On Oct 24, 2011
Nah over the course of a week she could easily do 40.

That is only 8 per day (ignoring weekends.) 4 miles each way.

If she lives in a fairly flat area with good bike lanes and such, then there is no reason not to do the 4 miles. At 15 MPH, that is just 16 minutes of biking each way.

For those of you who think everyone lives by the limits you cling to, I suggest you start opening that box you call a mind. There are folks who clock 100 miles each week. People actually take these things seriously and are not limited as you may think. There was a time I myself never had to do even a single mile, but as soon as I started it became second nature.   grin grin

If you live in a city and have no car,  doing 60 miles a week  easy is not out of the question. By the time you go to work come back, go do laundry, run errands, and do this and that that many people who own cars do, people easily clock 100 miles each week. There are even those who deliver pizzas on their bikes and no joke, these dudes love their jobs.
