A nation whose politicians are seemingly more highly valued and much better paid than it's professionals will always experience brain drain.

JAPAJANTIS affects everybody, even the political looters. The more money Nigerians make, the more they spend on foreign tastes. Provide local incentives like industrial estates, housing, schools and recreation areas like the old Western Nigeria.

Every worker compare their salaries to foreign workers as if the economy and training are the same as in Nigeria. We know it is not. What they spend in a month in Europe and America is what we spend in a year in Nigeria.

We can never solve the problem of Japajantis doctors just like other professionals that japa until we start training professionals for Nigerian needs and problems.

Can you imagine a Chinese doctor without Acupuncture training or Indian doctor without Ayurveda training? Ask a Nigerian doctor about traditional African Medicine, he would look at you as if you are crazy.

Profs. Olikoye Kuti, Lambo and Abimbola tried all they could, they were derided as Babalawo.

If you want solution, start training doctors for African needs, more Community Health Officers (Physician Assistants), better recruitment of children of Babalawo into Medical school.

The doctors we have today are trained to pass foreign exams before their final year. Even when they spend time passing local board exams and looking for internships abroad, their families suffer from proud Nigerian doctors that look down on Gburu. While their children sought public welfare to survive.

DECLAN2015,

Thank you for this impute. Most people think good doctors come out fresh like pastries from the oven.

Medicine is not like any other proffesion...
It an apprentship system and most of what they do come with experience.
So if those that need to pass the knowledge down all ran away.what do u think will happen in the long run.
Medicine is not teaching proffesion

And they don't subsidize for other graduates apart from doctors abi?

So because others are ungrateful, doctors are therefore justified to be ungrateful too?

You need to understand that the job of being a doctor is innately humanitarian, so doctors are expected to have a better sense of compassion than others!

O ti late already. The gravity of this problem is now staring them in the face. A country where leaders go for health tourism abroad but thinks the dilapidated healthcare system back home will encourage health care workers will be motivated to stay back.

Undergraduate medical students are already preparing for foreign exams in their final year. Once they are done with internship, they are off. Some don't even do NYSC again before moving.

Nigeria indeed is lacking medical personnel and the fear of the brain drain JAPA is the beginning of sound brain functioning now.
Just talk..there won't be any expansion and/or upgrade on anything. No better remunerations to workers and faculty. Just talk done at a wedding reception.

The problem isn't producing more medical doctors, rather it's about incentivising them to stay. Even if you graduate 50% more medical doctors than last year, that is simply more people that will be looking to migrate.

Fix the root cause - salaries, career progression, medical facilities, and make it inviting so more students would want to study medicine and also stay back to practice.

If you don't fix the main issues, having more doctors won't mean more will stay back. Although in a strange way, it could, but not at the scale FG expects. The more important thing is to address the reasons they leave.

The FG will never see this post. They know what to do, but they feel that producing more Doctors is the solution to the brain drain syndrome.

Federal government should use their head at list for once, government should place medical doctors and nurses on scholarship and salary when they are in school, with this they will be happy to stay.the northern government do this for their people

That's why the current US regulations won't recognize Nigerian trained Doctors it's tailored for the Accredited zones from 2024 no Nigerian University fall under it .......
You can't be studying Tropical Medicine trying to Practice in the Temperate ....
They would still be regulations at some point ...
If you want to practice in the cold region you have to study the diseases, Genetical misnomer that is prevalent there..
You can't be studying Sickle cell and expect to treat people with Tay-Sachs Syndrome ...

I never knew I had dvllards as leaders that’s idiotic like this.
Increasing the medical student quota won't help the problem. The capacities in med schools are already stretched, now they wanna add more. My year one lecture venues were like Oshodi market on Saturday afternoons. I remember the NSLTs were chock-full, people at the back aren't even hearing the lecturers. Then the clinical posting problems. I remember one very particular case. During my obs and gyne posting, we were divided into teams. The labor ward had a delivery and we were around 20 students, 3 registrars, 2 senior reg, and 1 consultant. Then a multitude of nursing students, like 30. All crowded around a naked woman in labor. Now how tf is that woman gonna be comfortable? We understand its a teaching hospital and doctors are made there, but come on, she would be embarrassed. Teaching hospitals are operating way above their limits, like 200%. And that was in 2000. This is 2023. Shit is gonna be hitting the fan regularly.
Now the clueless government wants more docs.
Even if they produce more docs, they are getting out once they get their full reg from MDCN. Writing PLAB, USMLE is now regular during housejobs unlike our days everyone was gunning for residency.
So the effect is more docs are churned out (probably half-baked), most of them get out of the country on their first chance, we are back to the problem.

Federal Government wasn't the Problem ASUU Nigerian Medical Association created it ....They also didn't want to employ many Doctors before Covid ...As soon as the UK US window opened they are not only looking for Doctors but trying to even retain their staffs...
Have you noticed that the beef with Nurses have gone down .... They're now prioritizing them infact ...Nurses are fleeing more because they get to UK and earn almost more than Doctors unlike Nigeria were they keep raising their superiority over the roof even though they might not work like than nurses ......
In abroad it's about work hours not seating in office....
Nairaland…. People come online to spout all sorts. Lol 😆
Please which planet do nurses earn more than doctors?
I even had to crosscheck, maybe NHS or other health services have added more money to nurses salaries.

The average Nurse salary in UK is £44,339.47
The hourly average pay for a Nurse salary in UK is £21.32
The starting salary for a junior Nurse in UK is £22,100.00 per year or £10.63 per hour

The average Doctor, General Practioner (GP) salary in UK is £91,251.43
The hourly average pay for a Doctor, General Practioner (GP) salary in UK is £43.87
The starting salary for a junior Doctor, General Practioner (GP) in UK is £43,420.00 per year or £20.88 per hour

Please if you have adverse info, do lets share.
People would read that crap and believe it and it would be everywhere that nurses earn more than doctors in the UK, (or any part of the world for that matter)

I went to the bank today. They announced me as Dr…. (as the salutation written on the card application), none of the people there allowed me to be attended first. What does that say? Nobody gives a fvck about me. So why should I give my own precious fvck? Why am I not allowed to be a regular citizen? I’m sure you want the docs to sacrifice but you don't wanna sacrifice. Isn't your hypocrisy breathtaking?

Bro, If the doc works extra hours, he gets extra pay. Same as the nurse. There's nowhere nurses earn the same as docs, never mind more. It may happen if the nurse is much more experienced and specialized, and the doc is fresh off med school. Even at that, the difference wont be much.
