Chidolue, Patrick.

AWKA -Professor Williams Emeka Obiozor, the 97th Inaugural lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, delivered a compelling discourse on fostering inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria. As a distinguished figure in Adult Learning and Special Education, and the Director of the Center for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER), his lecture emphasized a paradigm shift to dispel societal misconceptions about disabilities.

Addressing a captivated audience at the University's main Auditorium on December 12, 2023, Prof. Obiozor highlighted the global significance of addressing issues related to disabilities, inclusion, and adult learning for sustainable development. Recognizing a notable shift in societal perspectives, he advocated for a departure from the medical model to a social model that prioritizes inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Identifying key components of this paradigm shift, Prof. Obiozor emphasized a rights-based approach, inclusive and accessible environments, and empowerment for self-determination. He underscored the need for a transformation in the way society perceives and handles disabilities, aiming to break stereotypes, reduce stigma, and promote a more inclusive society.

Discussing the implications of this paradigm shift, the lecturer emphasized its role in inclusive education, workplace dynamics, and challenging societal attitudes towards disabilities. Prof. Obiozor stressed the importance of fostering an open and welcoming culture in the workplace, promoting diversity in hiring, providing flexible work arrangements, and celebrating diversity.

Referring to the success story of CENDASNER, he acknowledged the pivotal support of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Charles O. Esimone FAS and highlighted the center's motto, "There is ability in disability."

Examining challenges in Nigeria, Prof. Obiozor proposed the application of disability rights principles to address ethical concerns in research and services. He advocated for research to enable individuals with disabilities to compete globally, emphasizing the importance of education, training methods, and job communication.

Prof. Obiozor urged all stakeholders to contribute to creating a disability-friendly environment in various settings. He called for a shift from stigmatization to recognizing the knowledge and skills of individuals with disabilities, emphasizing the value of equity, fairness, and love. The lecture concluded with the decoration of Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor as the 97th Inaugural lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, attended by a distinguished gathering of university professionals, directors, heads of departments, staff, students, and well-wishers.
