montrealgazette.com/mobile/story.html?id=5678653 Iran appears to have worked on designing an atomic bomb and may still be conducting research relevant for such weapons, the UN nuclear watchdog said in its most detailed and hard-hitting report on military dimensions to Tehran's nuclear program. Citing what it called "credible" information from member states and elsewhere, the agency listed a series of activities applicable to developing nuclear weapons, such as high explosives testing and development of an atomic bomb trigger. The hotly anticipated International Atomic Energy Agency report, preceded by Israeli media speculation of pre-emptive air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, presented new evidence pointing to concerted efforts to obtain nuclear arms capability. Some of the cited research and development activities by Iran have both civilian and military applications, but "others are specific to nuclear weapons," said the report, obtained by Reuters on Tuesday ahead of an IAEA board of governors meeting. Tehran quickly rejected the report. "(It) is unbalanced, unprofessional and politically motivated," said Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's ambassador to the IAEA. The United States and its allies are expected to seize on the document to press for more punitive sanctions on the major oil producer over its record of hiding sensitive nuclear activity and lack of full co-operation with UN inspectors. "I think the facts lay out a pretty overwhelming case that this was a pretty sophisticated nuclear weapons effort aimed at miniaturizing a warhead for a ballistic missile," said prominent U.S. proliferation expert David Albright. Tehran has dismissed the allegations of covert atomic bomb research, based largely on Western intelligence funnelled to the IAEA, as fabricated and baseless. The IAEA said it had carefully assessed the information passed on from member states and found it consistent in terms of technical content, individuals and organizations involved and time frames. It said it had gathered its own supportive details. "The agency has serious concerns regarding possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program," the IAEA said in the report, which included an unusual 13-page annex with technical descriptions of research with explosives and computer simulations applicable to nuclear detonations. It added: "The information also indicates that prior to the end of 2003, these activities took place under a structured program, and that some activities may still be ongoing." The IAEA report included information from both before and after 2003. It expressed "particular concern" about information provided by two member states that Iran had carried out computer modelling studies linked to nuclear weapons in 2008-09. "The application of such studies to anything other than a nuclear explosive is unclear to the agency," the IAEA said. For several years the IAEA has been investigating Western intelligence reports indicating that Iran has coordinated efforts to process uranium, test high explosives and revamp a ballistic missile cone to accommodate a nuclear warhead. Iran insists that its program to enrich uranium is for a future network of nuclear power stations to provide electricity for a rapidly growing population, so that it can export more of its oil and gas. But Tehran's history of hiding sensitive nuclear activity from the IAEA, continued restrictions on IAEA access and its refusal to suspend enrichment - which can yield fuel for atom bombs - have drawn four rounds of UN sanctions, as well as separate punitive steps by the United States and European Union. |

I have the same feeling of looming armagedom. Iran might not crumble easily like afganistan, iraq and libya. |

Iran does not have to crumble all that will be required is an initial series of extreamly harshe extreamly well co-ordinated air strikes at all of irans nuclear infrastructure and most of their convensional military infrastructure after which a naval blockade will be effected. |

Then we all die. Nuclear holocaust. Earth is ravaged. We wait for hundreds of years underground and after the earths atmosphere has cleared we climb back out and build a new world. What do you expect. You dey fear? |

Parisgoodman: You rarely have a choice of choosing how you exit this world so stop worrying about things that are beyond your control. Unless you become President of Iran in the near future. |

Parisgoodman: One thing I have learned from the war in Iraq and Libya is that the West is more united than ever, the rest hate them but are not united enough to die for each other.China and Russia will never fight America over an Arab or African country. If Israel start the fight then Iran will be gone, simply as that. I think Iran's millitary capabilities is overated just like Gadaffi's Libya. We all thought Gadafii had all the latest anti-missiles,aircarfts and other modern high tech millitary machineries and gadgets, but look how quick NATO took him down. |

Its all hype, the west are planning surgical strikes and if they do so there will be the usual anti-west rants in the middle-east then life will go back to normal. |

International law on the use of force is crystal clear: nations may use unilateral force only to defend themselves against attack or imminent threat of attack. Article 2.4 of the UN Charter authorizes the unilateral use of force only in self-defense, which means when attacked or when faced with an imminent threat of attack. In this caseĀ Iran is not attacking anyone. |

@Horus, Article 2.4 of the UN Charter authorizes the unilateral use of force only in self-defense, which means when attacked or when faced with an imminent threat of attack. In this case Iran is not attacking anyone. So what if Isreal can clain that they are under an imminent threat of attack from Iran? Is that a legitimate reason to go to war? Afterall, Iran's President has been making a public charge to annihilate Isreal while building the capability to do so. What say ye about that? |
