How Many Days And Nights Are There Between Friday And Sunday? by Mayntheemaynn: 12:49pm On Feb 16 |
How can we fit three days and three nights between a Friday afternoon crucifixion and early Sunday morning? Some Christian apologetics try to explain this by suggesting Jesus was killed on Wednesday, and that there were about two Sabbaths taking place back to back. http://storage.cloversites.com/makinglifecountministriesinc/documents/Did%20Jesus%20die%20on%20Friday%20or%20Wednesday.pdf https://www.ucg.org/the-good-news/jesus-wasnt-crucified-on-friday-or-resurrected-on-sunday-how-long-was-jesus-in-the But this is incorrect, as Jesus was killed on Friday, the day before the Sabbath. I will be using the Gospel of Mark to explain this because it is the earliest to be written among the Gospels. Some things to note: The Book of Mark only mentions "3 Days" (Mark 8:31, Mark 9:31) and not "3 Days and 3 Nights." Additionally, the reference to Jonah is missing in the Book of Mark. Only the Gospel according to Matthew among the Gospels uses the reference of Jonah with the "3 Days and 3 Nights" in Matthew 12:38-41. Mark 14:1-2. 1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 2 “But not during the Feast,” they said, “or the people may riot.” Mark 14:1 tells us of TWO upcoming events. Verse 2 states that the Pharisees and scribes cannot arrest Jesus on the day of the Feast because of the crowd, echoing Mark 12:12. Therefore, the only other event during which they can arrest Jesus is on the Passover, when he won't be with the multitudes. Mark14:12 And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?- Mark 14:12 talks about the first day of the unleavened bread, which simply means the Passover. The disciples prepared the Passover as directed by Jesus (Mark 14:16), and later that evening, Jesus and his disciples went to have the Passover. Mark 14:17-- When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. After Jesus had finished the Passover, Mark14:46 tells us that Jesus was arrested. He was then brought before the high priest and charged with blasphemy. According to Leviticus 24:16, "Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him.....". The next morning, which was the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Mark 15:6), they brought Jesus to Pilate, and Jesus was crucified later that afternoon at 3 p.m. Mark 15:42- It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached. The Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread is also the Same Day as the Day of Preparation, which is the day before the Sabbath. The Sabbath is on Saturday. This means that the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread was Friday, the day Jesus was killed, while Jesus was arrested on Thursday, the Day of the Passover. Mark 16:9, although confirmed as a later addition, states that Jesus rose early on Sunday, the first day of the week. However, Mark 9:31 says, "They will kill him, and AFTER three days he will rise." Following this, Jesus was killed on Friday, and after three days will be Monday not Sunday. Did Jesus ever meant the 3 days to be taken Literal or as a Parable? The disciples struggled to understand parables, as indicated in Mark 4:13 and Mark 7:17-18. The Book of Matthew attempts to explain this "3 days" by referencing the Book of Jonah and his concept of "three days and three nights." However, the Book of Johah is not considered historically accurate by most scholars. The Wikipedia page on Jonah about sums it up: “The consensus of mainstream biblical scholars holds that the contents of the book of Jonah are entirely ahistorical. … Many scholars regard the book of Jonah as an intentional work of parody or satire. If this is the case, then it was probably admitted into the canon of the Hebrew Bible by sages who misunderstood its satirical nature and mistakenly interpreted it as a serious prophetic work.” But not only that, even Jewish Scholars and Rabbis regard the Book of Jonah as a Midrash and not a historical narrative. A midrash is a type of biblical interpretation that delves into the deeper meanings behind the text using Allegory and Metaphor. In the case of the Book of Jonah, it is seen as a midrash that thoroughly explores the theme of Mercy and Repentance. https://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/8751-jonah-book-of 2 Likes
