Reps Direct CBN To Suspend Cybersecurity Levy by Good01: 2:51pm On May 09
The House of Representatives Thursday asked the Central Bank of Nigeria to withdraw the circular directing all banks to commence charging a 0.5 per cent cybersecurity levy on all electronic transactions within the country, The Nation reports.

The motion on the urgent need to halt and modify the implementation of the cybersecurity levy was moved by the member representing the Obio/Akpor Constituency, Kingsley Chinda.

The House urged the CBN to withdraw the circular and “issue a more understandable one,” as Chinda had drawn the attention of the House to multiple interpretations of the CBN directive against the specifications in the Cybersecurity Act.

So basically, they're just asking for the CBN to clarify the correct percentage to be deducted.

They are not asking for the policy to be stopped.

Afterall, it was the same House of Rep and Senate that passed the Cyber Security Act into law.

This lot are just pretending to be shocked.

Rubber stamp reps. They are playing hide and seek. Maybe after meeting with tinubu they will change tune after widening the tax net. Imf and world bank needs to go somewhere else with their stupid loans. Loans have not really help ilus in anyway but more money to steal.

If you are transacting business with 10m. The business partner will ask for cash or you pay additional 50k for the cyber security levy. Only someone with shady wealth or fraudsters will comfortably pay additional 50k for 10m transfer. Anyone with hard earn money will resist paying 0.5% from business capital just like that..

This will further discourage banking and cause cash crunch like last year where people hoarding millions at homes and leading to inflation. Alot of banks might run out of business

If the cyber security infrastructure is weak, then allocate resources to build it. Taxing 0.5% without building anything is THEFT.

I don't feel it should be scrapped but the charge reduced to around 0.2% or even less.

Nigerians can shrug the lower figures off.

It's not so much about the levy, but can the money be genuinely accounted for?
