The Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Honourable Akin Rotimi has alleged that he earns only N600,000 per month as a lawmaker. He also promised to show his monthly payslip to Nigerians if they intend to verify his claims.

He dismissed the notion that lawmakers receive substantial monthly allowances, highlighting the discrepancy between public perception and actual figures. He refuted the claim of a 4.9 million naira monthly housing allowance for lawmakers, explaining that such an amount is provided only once every four years. He questioned the practicality of securing accommodation with 5 million naira spread over this period while serving in the House.

He said in an interview with TVC, ”We saw some videos making rounds across the social media about the salaries of the lawmakers. And there was a debate on the floor and appropriate action will be taken against people publishing all this fake news. I can tell you categorically, that the earnings of lawmakers is N600,000 per month and some even earn a little less than that.

So when someone comes and tells you that furniture allowance will be given every month, you begin to worry that people don’t know how things work. These things are being given within four years. I earn N600,000 per month and I can show Nigerians my payslip if they want. Somebody will say we are given 4.9 million naira once for housing allowance, does that make any sense? No, it doesn’t. You are only given 4.9 million once in four years. How much accommodation are you able to get with 5 million naira for four years?”
