The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says success of any election largely depended on the professionalism and competence of those responsible for conducting it.

INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, said this while warning its personnel against unethical and corrupt practices in the upcoming Edo and Ondo governorship elections.
He spoke on Monday in Abuja at a lecture in honour of late Abubakar Momoh, former director-general of the Electoral Institute (TEI), from August 2013 to May 2017.

Mr Yakubu, represented by the national commissioner, and chairman, Board of Electoral Institute, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, warned that any unethical practice before, during and after those elections would incur severe punishments under the law.

The theme of the lecture was: “Achieving Professionalism among Election Personnel through Effective Training in Preparation for the Edo and Ondo Governorship Elections.’’
He advised electoral officers to be guided by the following principles of integrity, impartiality, transparency, professionalism, gender and disability sensitive.
He said it was important for electoral personnel to be knowledgeable, skilled and well-equipped with relevant competencies to handle the complexities and challenges of the electoral process.

“Moreover, the crucial role election personnel play in upholding the integrity of our democratic processes cannot be overstressed. The manner in which they discharge their duties and responsibilities affects the degree of confidence voters will have in the electoral process, which will impact their participation and turnout,’’ he said.

Mr Yakubu said that to ensure credibility and trustworthiness in elections and build trust among the electorate, INEC had always prioritised the professional development of its election personnel. He said the commission identified effective and efficient electoral training as the key to unlocking professionalism among election personnel.

“The commission’s involvement in effective training programmes has empowered its staff to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in order to strengthen our processes and procedures to serve the interests of all Nigerians,’’ he said.

He said that through training, INEC was able to deepen electoral knowledge and strengthen the skills and competencies of personnel over time. The TEI director-general, Dr Sa’ad Idris, in his remarks, said that INEC, in pursuit of its mission and vision, had prioritised professionalism toward achieving free, credible, transparent and inclusive elections.

“As we prepare for the 2024 Edo and Ondo off-cycle governorship elections, the commission is assured that the outcome of effective training of Election personnel will manifest in a high level of professionalism.

"Naija Elections" App: AI to Empower Nigerian Youths, Provide Real-Time Eectoral Info

The Minister of Youths Development, Jamila  Ibrahim, says artificial intelligence is pivotal to the electoral development of youths. Ms Ibrahim said this at the unveiling of ‘Naija Elections’, a generative AI tool developed by Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) with the support of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in Abuja on Thursday.

According to her, the electoral AI tool heralds a new era in which every Nigerian can participate meaningfully in our electoral process.

“This platform will empower our youths by giving them easy access to accurate real-time electoral information, enabling them to make informed decisions and participate actively in electoral processes.

“As we inaugurate this platform today, I wish to emphasise the government’s determination to deploy technology that will enhance our democratic processes,” Ms Ibrahim said.

Speaking also at the launch, Bukola Idowu, KDI executive director, said the tool would facilitate easy access to the Nigerian election ecosystem by youths.

“Every information on Niaja elections is from the official sources that is, the Constitution and INEC,” said Mr Idowu. What we have done is that we give you information that you can rely on, and you can actually use the platform without signing in. You just log on to the address, and it  does not store an individual’s data.”

Cynthia Rowe, development director at FCDO, said, “For a country that is as large and diverse as Nigeria, a well-informed electorate is pivotal.”

According to her, an educated voter is better equipped to make informed political choices and engage in the democratic process in a meaningful way.

According to her, technology is bridging digital gaps in business, education, and security, which ensures much better efficiency.

Ms Rowe added, “As we celebrate this launch it’s important that we  look at the broader context, democracy around the world is all facing exceptional challenges of  misinformation and disinformation, which encourages scepticism.

“And, it is  important we know  that our collective efforts in putting forward correct information using platforms like this. We are also strengthening democracy in Nigeria and contributing to global efforts on democratic values.”

The app, developed by Nigerians, is built to supply any electoral information that concerns Nigeria and can be accessed by logging on to www.naijaelections.ng.

Criminals conduct a fraudulent election with glitches and they started lecturing the disfrancised nation about electoral credibility. Mahmod Yakubu just described the INEC under him- a fraudulent organisation.

Exactly. According to headless mob, inec was competent in the results of Abuja, Lagos, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo and Ebonyi. But the same inec is incompetent in the results of other states.
Still beats me how they expected gringory obi to win NE, NW, SW and NC. Perhaps they expected inec to be counting insults and social media likes and shares as votes for grievingory.
