President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that civil servants who relocated abroad while drawing salaries without formally resigning must refund the wages they received during the period.

Tinubu spoke at the 2024 Civil Service Award and Gala Night, the climax of the week-long 2024 Civil Service Week, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

During the media parley to mark the 2024 civil service week, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation shared the revelation regarding employees who had relocated abroad while drawing salaries without formally resigning.

She, however, said that measures have been taken to address this issue.

Speaking on Saturday, Tinubu insisted that “we must ensure those responsible are held accountable and restitution is made.”

“The culprits must be made to refund the money they have fraudulently collected. Their supervisors and department heads must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch,” the President said.

He noted that the Civil Service cannot just be a workplace where ‘anything is possible, ‘where workers violate rules without the fear of punishment or repercussions.

“The civil service of any nation is too important for such misconduct to take root or be tolerated.

“The Civil Service is the bedrock, the engine, the locomotive of government, which is necessary for the government to deliver public goods to citizens. As politicians, we are no more than drivers of the locomotives that you provide,” he added.

Staying abroad and collecting salary in Nigeria is a big time crime that must be frowned at.

Smh. You don’t know nada. If they know what is good for them they will quickly refund as failure to do so will result into their prosecution. The military lady sent abroad for her PhD is still being prosecuted and may even be convicted in absentia. If that happens, red notice for their arrest can be issued and once they land in Nigeria, their status will appear on immigration records and they will be handcuffed immediately!

Any sensible person should be ready to quickly refund the fraudulently recieved funds he or she has collected instead of facing a lifetime disgrace of being a convicted felon.

Hmmm
But what if you work remotely here in Nigeria and relocated abroad without letting your company know and then you are still collecting salary. You are available for tasks when needed although there are fewer tasks to handle.

It’ll be deducted from their retirement or termination benefits. They still have gratuities/contributory pensions with their Pension Fund Administrators (PFA).

Yet you won't pay them the wages their labour and sweat deserve.
You and your politicians corner all the resources of the country and leave the bedrock, the engine running on empty stomachs.

Shame.

No way! Wrongdoing must have consequences in this country. Heads of such MDAs must be charged to court and sent to jail to serve as deterrent to others. Unfortunately, Nigeria isn't a serious country and they will still go scot-free.

Most Nigerians are inherently corrupt, they only complain when corruption doesn't favour them.
