Next move, strip off states the powers to conduct LG elections. Our local councils must be allowed to function like their counterparts abroad. Councils should be able to provide accessible primary healthcare, rural roads, street lights, promote community sports and many more.

But state governors wiped off all these potentials that should have made life easier for the local populace and rural dwellers. angry

Focus on the message not the messenger. Ibori the last time I checked is still a citizen of Nigeria. The fact that he is an ex convict doesn't vitiate his right to hold personal views.

Let's enrich the discussion by looking at the pros and cons of the ruling rather than throwing invective. This platform ought to serve as melting pot for cross fertilization of ideas but all we keep seeing is insult upon insult on personality.
Did the supreme court tell you that they don't know what is in the constitution. The constitution contains a lot of abnormalities. Do we have to wait till when the constitution is amended before we do the right thing. The constitution did not expect the governors to be pilfering with the allocation of the local government, are we now to be looking at the evil deeds of the governors without making a correction.

Nigeria doesn't have the resources to run local government autonomy.

Local government chairmen will start moving on convoy with scares resources. It's only means more money to waste.

Although it's the perfect system of government but the state is too poor to even consider local government autonomy
Therefore let's put the local government funds under the control of the governor, his wife or wives, his children, his mistress and mistresses and other cronies?

James ibori is a certified condemned thief and has no moral ground in talking about any developmental aspect in nigeria. He is lucky that he is not in jail right now because some people in nigeria prison stole just a fraction of what he stole and they have spent more than 10years in prison.

If a local government generates money from tenement rates, produce tax, bill boards and sign posts, television and radio licenses as they are allowed by the constitution, nobody can take the money from them. The oil money belongs to the federal government constitutionally and how they spend or share it is somehow their prerogative.

This is actually the part that gets me laughing. Folks like you make it sound like LG chairmen have been itching to develop their areas and it is the govs that has been inhibiting them. What grand delusions!

Most of the LG chairs are former and active political thugs of their godfathers. The few who are not are simply appendages and bootlickers.
Secondly, how many LG chair are actually resident in their LGs as we speak?

Lastly, Tinubu is an hypocrite. When he was gov, he wouldn't let anyone touch his LG funds. He sanctimoniously preached true federalism and devolution of powers. He comes in and he starts taking steps to decimate and whittle down govs and states simply because he wants to control everything even to the smallest. This singular act has repudiated all the talk of federalism from him over the years. Shame on Ariwoola who allowed his court to be used to carry out a coup on the constitution.
lol, u are part of those state govenors Entourage that wants to support rubbish and underdevelopment in Nigeria

This should be followed by INEC conducting the LG elections. Not that it will be free and fair, but it will be better than with the State controlled electoral bodies in charge.

Kudos to the Supreme Court for this landmark judgement. Only rogue governors and former governors will be against the judgement. Local Government should not to tied to the apron spring of the governors. We've seen how rogue governors like Peter Obi ruled for 8 years without conducting local government election. They collect every single kobo belonging to the LGAs and then set up a useless transition committee that are un-elected and then give them peanut to operate. Any one that is against this judgement is an enemy of Nigeria.

Kudos to the AGF and Mr. President for this.

Ibori should go and sit down. Every sane, honest and law abiding Nigerian is happy with the judgement. Financial autonomy for LGAs is a recipe for true grassroots development and security.
GOD bless you.
Every Nigerian should take grassroots development serious now. Election to LG Chairman offices should be taken just as seriously if not even more seriously than governorship and Presidential elections cos they are the ones to directly impact the people and the funds are now coming directly to them for just that.

How is it a big one? Kindly explain. The LGAs will suddenly start doing great and mighty deeds abi? No looting, structure or godtaherism just pure and unadulterated service to the people abi?
At least, we'll be able to hold the LG chairmen responsible for their own deeds.
They're not meant to be figure heads. LG is supposed to be self-governed, independent from the state.
Next step is to have INEC conduct their elections and mandate their terms in office to be 4 years.

because Tinubu did wrong wen he was gov, you think its bad for him to use this golden oppotunity to correct the wrong of the past?

Did you think ibori is talking becos he love nigeria, by pointing to letters of the constitution, or speaking on behalf of present govs, by airing their anger, cos of unneccessary powers they acruied to themselves, which is now slipping away from them?

Go and sue the Supreme court if you are not pleased with the landmark judgement.. We don't like the way the third tier of Govt is being technically crippled . They must not be allowed to operate at the mercy of state Govt
