Another foolish assessment by a supposed expert. How much grain has the Nigerian non-performing agric sector been able to produce? While Ukraine produces grain in excess and even looking for where to sale. Idiotic opportunist destroying Nigeria with nonsense ideas.

All this external advisers should let Nigeria breath

We urgently need food importation at the moment, the local ones are simply not enough

See price of pepper and rice, why can't we import if we can? Then gradually on the side we continue to massively ramp up production

That's how IMF and world bank are both shouting we should unified exchange rate and remove subsidy at the same very time, now we see where that has taken us

Tinubu should open the border and let some food item comes in to lower food cost, then the governors should budget heavily for food production why FG also support massively

don't mind them .people were suffering and he was saying food importation will destroy local production. What has local production do for us if not hunger . The purpose of local food production has been defeated since the time of buari. All the money given to farmers were no where to be found . They used our money to only enrich themselves. The money they received from CBN is the same money they are using to hunger in the country . Fb should open border please not only to import food to the country .

He is protecting his and AfDB's interest with the statement. They have given Nigeria millions of Dollars for Agric development in Nigeria. If you import food, how will they justify giving such money to us if the purpose is not achieved?
However, he should consider that people are hungry and need some relief at least for the 6 months they are planning to import. Within the period, if all hands are on deck and their grants are well utilized, then we should be able to boast of abundance and affordability in Agric sector.

If you were a farmer, you’d understand the long term consequence of dependence on importation whether long or short term.

Elitist's theory. The truth about the Nigerian educated elists is that they hardly care about the common man. They see the common people as lazy and illiterates who wait for government to do everything for them. Another thing they have in common is their wickedness. If you go to their families, they hardly help immediate or extended family members. They feel everyone should carry his or her cross. So I don't expect anything better from the supposed highly placed African development bank chairman. The poor can die if they can't struggle on their own to survive for all he cares not minding the state things are due to government policies

he is right. We should have cultivated harder but since we are in it already, importation is inevitable. A tonne of corn in intl market is around $260 or N400,000. That brings a bag of 100kg down to around N40k and let's say N60k-N70k with sellers profit. Check corn price in agriculture section of nairaland.com and see for yourself the disparity. We need import since we failed in local cultivation.

Egypt and Zimbabwe are doubling local wheat production while we are doubling local wheat production propaganda under APC govt here.

This is the clear indication that the so-called elites don't want any form of relief for the masses.
Dubai and Qatar imports most of their foods daily especially beef from Ethiopia and Turkey yet they are waxing stronger economically, during the time of Yaradua we imported rice, wheat, peas massively and we were far better than when IMF and this AFDB boss advised PMB & PBAT to shot the window of food importation. If PBAT wants to succeed he should ignore AFDB and IMF and go back to the policies of late Umar Musa Yaradua which was the best so far since independence because it's only his time that our inflation dropped and PMS price fall was experienced with no or little external debt
Re: Food Importation May Destroy Nigeria’s Agric Sector – Akinwumi Adesina by Oluwademilade: 8:19am On Jul 14
So we should starve because we want to protect somebody’s investment, even when it’s obvious local production is not sufficient. Besides bringing down the price of food is the most effective way to fight inflation as food price is the highest contribution to inflation.

Local farmers are not helping us in this country. How can locally grown rice be almost as expensive as imported rice? undecided
It's the middlemen cartel we'll blame here.... And the govt to a larger extent as they didn't provide any food price regulations.

Yes Nigeria will produce more food but in the mean time let’s allow importation to meet demands and bring down the food price inflation.

If an imported product becomes cheaper than local products, either our local producers step up or step down from producing such products. What's the need of protecting our local producers or farmers if prices are going to soar uncontrollably!

Hunger and starvation is the best and only strategy to build Nigeria up to greater heights.
It is our legacy, our current APC government has achieved alot within a short while in office

Re: Food Importation May Destroy Nigeria’s Agric Sector – Akinwumi Adesina by yemre: 8:38am On Jul 14
Let there be massive food importation!

I know this is not right, as it will further put pressure on our forex reserve, but our farmers got so greedy and choose to hold us to ransom, knowing fully well that the importation have been banned just to protect them.

I need someone, who knows better, to tell me why a paint of garri should be sold for #4,000 and a paint of Nigerian beans sold for #11,000 in Nigerian market, if not for sabotage.

Is cassava planted with dollars or processing and finishing or beans done in foreign currency?

They called for it, so they should get it.

A maa mu owo ile lo si ita (the money meant for them will be paid to foreign farmers to send us food at a cheaper rate even after paying for shipping, customs and associated charges).

I rise!

Of course, it may but of what benefit is the growth if the farmers have decided to take the prices of their produce beyond the reach of the common man for their selfish gains? We need a reset.

Food Importation is the only solution for now since our incompetent governmess can't get rid of Bandits and terrorists preventing farmers from farming.
