Documents reveal Edo APC Candidate Okpebholo Submitted False Date of Birth Information to INEC

Revelations of discrepancies in the date of birth details submitted by Senator Monday Okpebholo, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, have sparked a fresh scandal ahead of the September 21st gubernatorial election.

Documents exclusively obtained by Peoples Gazette show that Okpebholo has provided multiple conflicting dates of birth in the sworn affidavit (Form EC9) he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as required by law for candidates seeking elective office.

In the Form EC9 affidavit, Okpebholo stated his date of birth as August 29, 1970. This was affirmed in a Statutory Declaration of Age Affidavit sworn by his brother, Okpebholo Ojeifo Joseph.

However, a review of Okpebholo's West African School Certificate (WASC) result obtained in 2008 shows his date of birth as August 29, 1972, contradicting the 1970 date in his INEC filings.

Further investigations revealed that Okpebholo's voter registration profile on the INEC portal lists his date of birth as August 1, 1977, presenting a third conflicting date.

"Naturally one can only be born once on a particular day, meaning that any other day being declared as one's date of birth other than that particular day is a false statement," the report stated.

Section 29 (6) of the Electoral Act 2022 stipulates that the provision of false information in an affidavit submitted to INEC can result in the disqualification of a candidate and their political party from participating in an election. If the determination is made after the election, the candidate who scored the second-highest number of valid votes will be declared the winner.

The latest revelations have sparked concerns within the APC leadership in Abuja, with some party loyalists, including former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole and APC deputy gubernatorial candidate Dennis Idahosa, calling for Okpebholo to withdraw from the race to allow the party to field a replacement candidate before the September 21st election.

An INEC official in Edo State stated that the commission believes the August 1, 1977 date in Okpebholo's voter registration profile is his actual date of birth, as it is the only one that falls on a Monday, which may be the reason for his first name. However, the official noted that INEC is bound by law to remain neutral and that aggrieved parties can approach the courts for redress.
