In the US, you cannot apply to write the LSAT (Law School Aptitude Test) t o gain admission to study Law if you do not have a 4 year degree- Meanwhile, In Nigeria, anyone, fresh from one secondary school - "barely able to clean their anus in terms of reasoning and life experience" will write WAEC and JAMB in "miracle centers" and baam! - they are reading Law or Medicine in a University. In America, you can not read Medicine without, first, having a degree in one of the natural sciences like BCH (BioChem) MCB (MicroBiology) or even Pure and Applied Chemistry. Even for regular degrees like (Business Admin, Political Science, Philosophy or even Finance) most times - most schools prefer you get your 2 year Associate Diploma (what we call OND) from a Community College before applying for a degree program so they can evaluate your ability to cope with the University degree program -
And that is why most US citizens don't have a college degree

Naija always finds a way to bastardize and make chaotic - things done with integrity and orderliness in other climes -------> why the rush to graduate kids from Universities when they may be book smart but lacking emotional intelligence required for a balanced University education?

Why not enrol that kid in vocational education to spend that age 16 - 18 learning a life skill so when they get to the university- they can be earning a living with their new skill and sustaining themselves while in school to reduce the financial pressure on their parents ? What is the need of graduating at age 19, serve at age 20 and becomes miserably unemployed - doing yahoo yahoo and hook up from age 21 to 40? rabbissshhh!!!! angry
The point about Law and Medical Admissions here in the U.S. is correct and clearly NOT a secret ( Same holds for Canada). By the way, my son is in Yale law school, New Haven Conneticut so i know the system. However, that your argument will not make sense in Nigeria as you're only cut pasting without looking at the real issues be-deviling Nigeria.
Where are all the vocational curriculum we used to have in Secondary school gone (carpentry, sewing, baking, typing etc) ??
Answer: same government removed them from Secondary schools.
Where are all the Technical / vocational Secondary schools we used to have? They're all gone!!!
Where are the teacher training colleges? Gone!!
Even the polytechnic colleges are now clamouring for degree programmes because they're segregated and not properly placed in the labour market and down playing their certificates...
You have to treat issues on a case by case basis when it comes to Nigeria and the rest of the world...
Nigeria needs to be specially studied when it comes to policy submersualts....we're up there 🙄
Imagine, how many times that country has changed educational curricula just because some government official had a brain wave or was bored or wanted to steal money ....etc
If we can research enough and stick to what will work fir majority with few exceptions or at least provide options to University education and create jobs...create jobs!!! and create jobs!!!! then that will help.
Your last argument about graduating at 19 or 20 and becoming miserably unemployed does not hold water because even if the individual graduates at 23, 24 or 30 etc in the current Nigerian situation there still will not be hope unless there's a massive political and strategic change in policies all round ...i'm out!🤔

Any child that finishes his or her secondary school early, should go and learn a skill within that year before they turn 18.

May God set your useless children on a decline for the rest of their miserable lives. Sadist.

3ple9iner:

Most 16 years are not mature enough to live alone, first semester results is usually comes with attempted suicide or suicide.

That's a big lie. Many gained admission at 16 and fared perfectly well. The older the students the more rebellious and difficult. If a child is intelligent. Let them move on with their studies. The Minister obviously is far from intelligent and very backward. He should focus first on overhauling the dilapidated disgusting structures tagged schools and on employing qualified teachers.

Yes bro but there are lots of options in that clime !!!...Nigeria don't have that..first everyone in Nigeria is left to be herded into the university system because many employers will not give their CV a look if they don't have a university degree and even if they are employed and they turn out to be more competent or more skillful than a phD, they will be offered far less not because they are "inexperienced" but because they simply don't have "a higher paper qualification "
Ontop of all that there are not enough options to fit you into your line of education, skills set or competencies, you have engineers working as bankers.....actually tellers in Nigeria and bricklayers as Engineers ( because of who they know) and lawyers appointed Minister of Science etc sad cheesy
