People In NNPC Don’t Want Subsidy Scam To End - Emir Sanusi by adamusuleiman3: 3:54am On Jul 23
The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said that Alhaji Aliko Dangote should not be blamed for buying dollars at lower rates at the time he was building his refinery because that was the actual rate the apex bank was selling to everybody at that time.

Sanusi, who commented on the issue through SOP Chat Group, initially said: “I honestly do not think it is a good idea for me to make comments on these issues, but some comments surprise me, and I just have to say something.”

The emir then went on to remark: “Aliko Dangote did not fix the price at which the CBN sold dollars. Everyone who got dollars from the CBN got dollars at the same rate if they bought on the same day. So we cannot blame him for buying dollars at a rate the CBN itself decided to sell to its customers.

“So the question for me is this. Let us forget the man Dangote. If the Central Bank were to prioritize a single enterprise for forex allocation, how many enterprises can we think of that are worthier than a refinery like this one?

“Consider the drain on our forex from importing petroleum products; the tens of billions of dollars of forex spent abroad; the huge losses due to theft in the name of subsidy.

“By the way, how much forex did Dangote buy from the CBN at this subsidized rate? How much forex did NNPC take from the federation account in the same year in the name of running and turning around its dead refineries? What are we benchmarking against?

“If any Nigerian came to me as a Central Bank Governor with a project like this refinery, I would recognize immediately its potential impact on the economy and give it all the support needed.

“Let our views on forex policies not becloud our sense of priorities. Once the CBN decided to sell dollars at the below market, it would be forced to ration the limited dollars available.”

“To my mind, giving dollars for the construction of a refinery is better than rice importers and, indeed, almost every other enterprise apart from education and health, given the impact on the macro.”

On the argument by NNPC that relying on one refinery is bad for our energy security, Muhammadu Sanusi II said: “This is most laughable. On the contrary, relying on a local refinery is far more secure than these imports.

“It is a very rich argument from an entity that had taken billions of dollars in the name of turnaround maintenance and not produced a drop of product from four refineries because it is more profitable to continue extracting rent in the name of subsidy. If NNPC activated its refineries, there would be no monopoly. Then, we can see the sulphur content of its products and compare them to Dangote’s.”

He said further: “Until then, keeping quiet is the honourable option for it, NNPC and its spinoffs have lost any right to talk until they fix the mess they have thrown us into.

“In any case, if the Dangote refinery is unable to meet local demand, the gap can be filled by imports, these people in NNPC do not want to end their lucrative subsidy scam, and I don’t think they will end it.
” But as a nation, if we do not thank Dangote for what he has done as an African to deal a hammer blow to multinationals and the rentier system and for structural change in this economy through value added in various sectors, we should not condemn him.

“Also, we tend to repeat stories without evidence. We hear about Dangote getting favourable taxation but no one has said what this tax is, if he got it alone or if it was offered to a sector or to pioneers, and if such a practice is in fact normal to encourage investment.”

The emir concluded thus: “Instead of killing Dangote, we should try and make more like him. Nigeria always kills its heroes and its best because of envy and pettiness.”

Watch how poor people will spin this story and make it sound as if because he's also a northerner.

I mean the same people who lament day and night about the cost of dollar and lack of employment opportunities.

They will be forced to think like animals because of tribalism forgetting that they are on their own in this life.

Nigeria needs Dangote refinery. Dangote refinery doesn't need Nigeria. Yes, he has hit a rough patch just like any new business venture does. All he needs now is to get past this stage and get more funding to secure crude from abroad. He will supply to African markets and we will continue our fights with subsidy

Meanwhile what is the role of the minister and minister of state for petroleum? What about the security agencies? Who is fooling who? The subsidy corruption cabal under the NNPC. Nigeria is a criminal enterprise being ruined by wicked unrepentant hardened criminals in and out of government.

I really do like Sanusi a lot - as an economist, not as an emir.

I think he raised valid points here - if we can't thank Dangote for what he has done as an African, we should not condemn him either.

If Dangote got the dollar at same rate as others, what wrong has he done? He didn't fix the dollar price, the CBN did.

Moreover, what sensible CBN governor won't give support to such massive refinery project?

Considering the amount the NNPC has spent on non-existent TAM for over 10 years, no sane person should accuse Dangote of trying to monopolize the market.

Let's even be sincere. Of all Dangote's line or group of business, which of it is monopolized? Maybe there is one or more, but none that I'm aware of.

Like Sanusi concluded, instead of killing Dangote, we should try to make more like him.

We often criticise policemen and Discos, saying that these people who genuinely go to work and solve problems (security and electricity challenges respectively) are corrupt.

If you call them corrupt, what then will you call refinery workers who go to work and pocket billions in salaries but those refineries don't refine one drop of crude oil?

Both nnpc, CBN and dangote are thieves.
That refinery was built with Nigeria's money.
Give dangote chance and he will milk Nigerians.
Give nnpc chance and they will continue their subsidy fraud. Same subsidy tinubu says he's ended.
Give CBN chance and thy will empty our external reserve as they've been doing since the days of Adam.
Imagine a CBN governor contesting for presidency under a party.
Naija na cruise. But hand go soon catch them.

Fulani Cabals against Hausa monopolist/capitalist, it's a game.
The guy will have his way. the outburst is part of the game with the government to break the cabal stronghold.

It's good for the nation. Cant it be possible to allocate him crude oil in certain quantity next to nothing in price or allocate oil block for him under agreement, and let him do the refine ring and the distribution through major players with depot, then FG monitor the logistics to avoid the diversion, do it for a certain time until the country is independent to have other multiple modular refineries. I dont know how hard it is.
It's a win-win for the government, the company, and the citizen because it will crash the price. But hell no, they want to be importing, then fix price, and keep collecting free dollars for their selfish interest. That Farouk guy has never been happy in recent times for once. Even here, you will see that he is always indifferent. I won't be surprised if he is representing all these powerful military generals, both retired and actives. Many of them have stakes in all these importations by proxies.

Though Obidients know Dangote is part of those that have benefited unfairly in the corrupt system in the country, Obidients are still backing him now in the greater interest of the country. Obidients are not for or against anyone for tribal, religious or any other sentiments, they are only after the good of the country.

I still not understand why youth who are complaing of joblessness and find every means to japa to do "boyboy" work even in sahara desert, are still conderming a man that risking his investment to assist nigeria in his little way to fix, not only job oppotunities but also economy.

Everthing that govt strugling to fix for several years, an individual is trying his best to put it in place, yet the jobless youths are still demonised him.

I think, Nigeria's youth really deserve the political leaders they are having.
