President Bola Tinubu on Thursday in Abuja emphasized the importance of sustaining democracy, its norms and institutions, noting that protests are an integral part of democracy but that no government will condone demonstrations that lead to the destruction of lives and property.

The President spoke at the Presidential Villa when he received a Letter of Credence from the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Richard Mills Jr.

”Our relationship with America is rich. We believe in democracy and freedom. Some of your predecessors worked hard during our transition to democracy, and we remember the likes of Ambassador Howard Jeter.

We look forward to Nigeria and the United States continuously working to expand cooperation on shared goals and democratic values.

”During the military era, we made our voices heard against dictatorship, and I was part of the group that engaged in peaceful protests without resorting to the destruction of property.

”We have worked hard to ensure 25 years of unbroken democracy and I will continue to maintain this democracy.

”In as much as we believe that demonstrations are part of democracy, we will never encourage any protests that lead to the destruction of lives and property,” the President stated.

Welcoming the U.S. State Department’s acknowledgement of Nigeria’s strategic role on the continent as Africa’s largest democracy, President Tinubu called on the U.S. government to pay more attention to Africa.

”Nigeria is ready to play its role as the largest democracy in Africa that is worthy of emulation to other African countries, but we need more U.S. partnership on the continent that is beneficial to both sides.

”We believe in freedom, and we are providing the leadership to make Nigeria’s economy grow,”
the President said.

Ambassador Mills affirmed U.S. support for Nigeria’s democracy and pledged support for bigger roles for Nigeria in the international arena.

”Nigeria is crucial to the United States because we share democratic values, and we are ready to give you all the support.

”I am here to make sure that the relationship blossoms both on democracy and the economic side,” Ambassador Mills said.

Be careful Mr president, Nigerians have every right to protest, I don't support the destruction of government property but this protest must hold.

The people of this country have given you ample of time to turn things around for good but it's keeps getting worse by the day, kindly resign if you are not capable of ruling this country.

You and your security chiefs will be held accountable for any loss of human life

What if the protest degenerate into violence and vandalism of properties as well as arsonist looting shops? Would you be there to face the wrath of law with your lives ?

Tinubu's government brought the untold hardship on everybody, No more suffering and smiling.

I pray the protest doesn't get hijacked but it must hold, government should also know that actions have consequences, you can't impoverish the people and expect them to do nothing

Ambassador Mills came visiting shortly after Dangote refinery was launched.

Ambassador Mills comes visiting shortly ahead of the protest.

Oh well… what do I know 🤷

Time will reveal everything eventually.

Will it be business as usual if the Republicans win in November? Could that be why Soyinka is firing verbal bullets at Trump… again, time will tell.

The never ending battles of Tinubu

But anyone that gets mixed up among the looting or vandalization crew would have his or herself to blame. Has any one been held responsible for any loss of life in a riot in Nigeria? They will throw a couple of million naira to the family of the deceased and government will go on. I am sure you don't remember the name of just one person that died in EndSars except you google it.

".....The promises made by our governors and senators are nothing but empty words. They aim to pacify us, to keep us silent and complacent, while they continue to line their pockets with bribes and neglect our needs. The truth is, 80% of them are the same, driven by greed and selfishness, with no regard for our well-being.

The current state of Nigeria is dire. Hardship is suffocating us, and many are dying from hunger. The time for action is now. We, the Nigerian youths, must come together and exercise our right to protest. It's our duty to demand change, to demand a better life.

For too long, we've been silenced, intimidated, and deceived. Our leaders have failed us, and it's time we hold them accountable. The protest is not just a call to action; it's a cry for help, a plea for our leaders to listen and act.

We're not just protesting against the government; we're protesting against a system that perpetuates inequality, injustice, and corruption. We're protesting against a system that allows our leaders to live in luxury while we struggle to survive.

The protest is not just about us; it's about our future, our children's future, and the future of Nigeria. We owe it to ourselves, our families, and our country to demand a better life.

This fact is not new! What is strange is the tyrannical mindset of every official of this useless government to attempt to either covertly threatened citizens not to protest as attested by the APC leadership/officials, the IGP, DSS, CDS/Army, Wike or using the guise of destruction of public utilities.

Were you part of the June 12 riots or uprisings in Nigeria especially in the SW here? Did you witness the magnitude of damage done by protesters then to public facilities as a result of citizens disenchantment against military rule? I am not in anyway advocating for a repeat, but what aggravated the situation was Abacha’s repeated attempts to use the military to scuttle the resolve of the determined citizens of this nation that were suffering the ills of the khaki boys.

A more worst form of that disturbances is here now. The government needs to handle it maturely not by using threat. The good thing about despicable acts of tyrannical leadership is that it helps to harden the resolved of the oppressed. The French and Iranian revolutions came about that way. There is nothing that can undermine the resolved of a determined people against oppression, suppression, repression and tyranny

Tinubu is just speaking truth to power.

Destruction has no place in our nation.

We need unity and progress, not chaos.

Let the naysayers take a seat!

Tinubu is right to stand firm against destruction. A responsible government must prioritize peace and progress. We need to focus on building, not tearing down.

Tinubu is right on point. We need to focus on building and not destroying. The future of Nigeria depends on our collective efforts, not protests that lead to chaos. Let's channel our energy into positive actions and support the government in achieving great things for our nation.
