But as you know, that in itself is a lie.

You would do better to marry a beauty queen, young sire.
How's it a lie? Did fuel cost not triple in June 2023? Did consumption not fall? Did our neighbours not complain that Nigeria's fuel is no more cheap?.
It seems you're confused if you don't even know what subsidy removal is

Why is govt subsidising fuel?

I don't know. Maybe Auntie Remi tinubu likes how you handle things here..

That's the question you should answer.

I can't help people who don't want to see, see.
If you want fuel to sell at 1500 per litre, then you should advocate for minimum wage of 375k cause that's the equivalent for a buoyant economy

Might be a good idea.

Even MTN is complaining if cost of diesel recently and asking to increase tariff or did you miss the news?

Yes, that's why our data bills would soon go up

Also, beneifts of subsidising electricity....meaning the power sector cannot make enough to attract the 10billion dollars yearly needed to improve things

But people like you believe you must bake bread for N1000 and sell it at N100 TO help the poor, while folks like me who sell it at N1500, and use the profit to expand business, pay salary and taxes, and meet family needs, are apparently off or something....

All this epistle without thinking that if Nigerians have enough purchasing power or in the least even abundant electricity, they wouldn't mind buying fuel at 1500 per litre.
We still higher purchasing power than Benin and Niger though.
However, I don't think we can completely run away from buying fuel. For instance, I've not used my generator for well over a year now (electricity supply have been very good, and I also went solar as backup), but we have to fuel our car to get around.
Apart from the fact that Nigeria is an oil producing country, fuel is very cheap.

It is simple.

1. Fuel costs below N1000 here

2. Fuel costs above N1000 over there. Even in NIger, with the recent reduction, fuel costs N1400 per liter

3. Naturally, smuggling would result. And let's be honest, it is not only big people doing it, even the small ordinary Nigerian would carry a 50 liter jerrycan of fuel across the border, and sell it, and come back with a big enough profit to bribe customs, and still have enough left over.

4. We don't have fuel, because government is struggling to pay the subsidy on fuel. Right now we owe fuel exporters lots of money, we are struggling to even pay the NNPC shortfall, and NNPC is now raiding the dividends to pay off its own shortfall.

5. And yet, Nigerians keep asking for cheap fuel

It is our desire to have N40 fuel that is causing this, people. And it is high time we woke up and realized fuel cannot be cheap, and totally removed subsidy.

Yet, anyone suggesting this now is apparently agbado, even if they have never voted for tinubu or never liked the man (I have not liked tinubu since 2005, when Gani first raised the questions about his certificate then)....

But it is obvious subsidy, even at tinubu level is not sustainable.

The only way to stop smuggling is to TOTALLY REMOVE SUBSIDES. Yes, fuel would cost N1500 per liter, and yes, Agbado people brought hardship to NIgeria, and yes NIgeria needs to divide, and bla bla bla

But you cannot sell at a loss and not expect issues.

And if you think NIgeria is the only country with this issue....

1. LIbya has a severe smuggling problem, to the point that smuggliers are being bombed by the LIbyan air force

2. Saudi has a smuggling problem with Yemen, which they are finding hard to fight

3. Iran has issues on the border with Pakistan. Iranian fuel is being smuggled into Pakistan well well. Subaisy

4. Venezuela has a massive smuggling problem. Same thing happening here. They lost 18 bn dollars to smuggling one year.

See the benefits of subsidy

Yet somehow, we want something that costs over N1000 to make to be sold at N200 or less because 'poverty'

We better wake up folks.

All these would have made sense if our leaders and the head of NNPC were straightforward.

From the unorthodox sale of the downstream to OVH, to the shady removal of subsidy and NNPC stark corruption.

It’s crazy to think that NNPC is complaining of cash shortages and what not when they’re still the ones claiming that 2023 till this point has been the most profitable for the commission; declaring trillions in profit after tax and all that.

Where then is the money if they’re still owing importers. Their dishonesty makes it so difficult to even follow the matter properly.

It’s so sad to be honest

Not surprised one bit.

Nigeria, a country that promises more but deliver less.

On one of the thread yesterday, some of the stooges were all about each and everybody should hold their state governors accountable while the talks about the role of presidency shouldn't be a topic of discussion and I kind of wonder, if the whole country was doing just fine wouldn't the president be singled out for praise but hell no, anything to absolve his holiness, the president of Nigeria from all blame is what most of them are on the look out for.

After the whole charade surrounding the fuel crisis or subsidy (whatever it's been called in Nigeria) many Nigerians are more confused with differing views from here and there and now, smuggling still goes on unchecked.

Nigeria must be an exhausting place to be.

Brother, it’s mentally draining. The dishonesty is too much.

NNPC can’t pay importers but claims that they had their best year yet with trillions after tax... where is all that money?!

Are you crying or laughing because you're actually poor at trolling

If subsidy removal can work, all the govts since 1999 wouldn't have reversed it.

Basic Government 101. You must have a govt before you have an economy. You can only have a govt when the people recognise the govt and believe it exists for their benefits. If not, govt is on the road to Bangladesh.

Your subsidy removal theory has failed time and again. Any time it is attempted, it leads to inflation, high cost of living and ultimately political instability.

If you claim in 2012 you saw the light of subsidy removal but since then you haven't seen the challenges it brings, then I regret to inform you that you actually went blind in 2012.

What is baffling is that the benefits you list for subsidy removal already exist even with subsidy in place. This shows that subsidy removal is just a fiscal principle and not an economic development agenda.

Lastly, I challenge you to show me any country in the world that has carried out subsidy removal and it led them to the eldorado you're promising.

I'll be waiting

But all these years, we have been told that the justification for fuel price increase is to discourage smuggling to neighbouring countries.

After all the price increases under the guise of removing subsidy, how come smuggling of fuel to neighbouring countries is still taking place?
It's simple: because the price of fuel has gone down.
1. When fuel subsidy was removed and it started selling at about N560-N600, the price of fuel in Nigeria became similar to that in neighbouring countries. So smuggling stopped overnight.
2. But since then, the price of petrol has dropped in Nigeria, such that it's now far cheaper in Nigeria than in neighbouring countries, hence the return of smuggling. (Read on before you type another question).
3. How/why is it cheaper here than in neighboring countries? Exchange rates. At the time subsidy was lifted, it was $1=750, landing cost of imported petrol was a little over N500 and it was selling here at N560 (same price in Niger and co). Now, it's $1=N1600, landing cost is around N1300, and it's selling here at N850 while it's N1,600 or more in Niger and co.
4. Petrol is currently selling here for around N850-N1000 (instead of the N1600 or so that it's selling in neighbouring countries) because government is paying subsidies.
4. If we don't want smuggling, government would have to "remove subsidy" again so our prices will keep up with international prices.
5. Government can't do 5 - there'd be wahala. So as long as our currency remains unstable, we will continue to have these problems, including smuggling.

Well I

1. Have a right to comment where I want to comment

2. Have a right to an opinion

3. Have a full understanding of the subsidy thing...my interest began in 2011/12 after all.

Here is a quote from a journalist in US

"The quickest way to drive down interest rates is to fix the economy. The quickest way to fix the economy is to drive down inflation. The quickest way to drive down inflation is to create a domestic energy bonanza. Harris won’t do that. Former President Donald Trump did do that in his first term and is promising to do it again. Energy affects the price of everything. If energy costs are low, the price of everything decreases because it becomes cheaper to manufacture, ship, and store everything."

And the quickest way to create an energy bonanza is by removing subsides, which would in turn drive up jobs and investment in the sector, which would also reduce or eliminate government spending on subsidy...which would reduce debts and deficits in the budget....which would eventually lead to more money and jobs

All we have to do is spend more time holding government accountable...simple.

The problem with your USA example is the US does not subsidise their petrol or electricity...so both sectors make enough profit to supply enough energy. Following your friend's proposal would only cause more losses...especially as he does not state how the prices are to be made cheaper.

Also USA earns a lot of income....too.

It's just insane what you keep defending n it's sickening.

SO, at the end, when subsidy costs go up year in and out and eat a deficit....at the end, you have issues. You want that?

Like someone rightly said on one of the thread you obviously get a hard on anytime you see subsidy topics
