Fhemmmy: Hmmm, now that nairalist.com has been affected, it is only a matter of time before nairaland.com is. Don't be surprised when you see Google launches a forum that will rival & might crush nairaland. We must not wait for this to happen before we wake up. |

BizNews: Can you provide facts to support your assertions; maybe it will make sense. Not sure why Google will want to kill local businesses, according to you. Google's main business is Search and this is one attempt to ensure more businesses and consumers are using the web. Nigeria provides a unique opportunity for online business to thrive - very young demographic and huge population. Also online usage continues to grow every year. Makes sense for Google or other business to have a presence in this huge market. In terms of impact on Nigerian web designers; well the web is rapidly evolving and people need to adapt. Right now, any small business owner can set up a web presence for less than $150 without a web designer. You can build your own website in couple of hours and start promoting your business. So web designers should think about doing web marketing and strategic planning or focus on contract work with big corporations. There's huge career/business opportunities in the digital and online space than simply designing websites. Overall, this Google move can be a huge benefit for small business owners if people see the bigger picture. In fact, any small business owner without a website is Leaving money on the table for competitors. |

You guys are not entirely correct. Facebook is the No.1 website in Nigeria and Google is just making sure that it kills Facebook's expansion in Nigeria by taking over almost every part of our "loca Nigerian Internet." They are doing the job really well at the moment. No problem, we will just jump on the Google bus and see how we can become the driver instead of hapless passengers. |

occam: With 'Google trader', Nairalist is on the back foot. Wait till we get 'Google forum' then Nairaland might struggle. Countries over the world do well to support and protect their local businesses, not import competitors for a technology that can be achieved locally. It might not be perfect at the beginning but with constant growth things will get better. |

Hodaya: Online advertising portals like Nairalist and Google Trader are sustained by huge budgets. You need to put money in online ads, email etc to drive people to the site and make sure they return. So I can see why Google with it's cash flow can compete effectively in this space. Online forums on the other hand are audience driven. Once people love the forum they always return. So Nairaland with over 800K users, generating thousands of discussion threads should be ok. Besides, the threat of competition should keep Nailraland on it's toes and drive innovation. Good news I believe for users like you and I. What exactly do you think Nigerian govt can do to protect Online businesses? I say nada |
Re: How Google Is Killing Nigerian Online Businesses by gidiMonsta(m): 6:47pm On Dec 09, 2011 |
How can anyone come here and claim dat google is stealing ideas from Nigerian developers? All we do here is recycle ideas dat have worked abroad e.g. 'tradestable = craiglist'. So how is google trader copying them? Google if anything has brought competition and opportunities to the Nigerian market; youtube.com.ng with its featherlite app ensures that users with slow internet can watch videos online. They provide APIs to help web developers. Nigerians should just sit up and start been innovative like the kenyans and mzanzi guyz. |
Re: How Google Is Killing Nigerian Online Businesses by Fhemmmy: 8:24pm On Dec 09, 2011 |
Hodaya: I dont think it is fair to blame google for the death of any site, let us look inward and we will see the reason why some of the sites are dying. Most sites like the one that was mentioned earlier, what is the total expenses per month compared to the total income . . . most of the sites started with experiment and once they started making like 3000$$ a month, they get tired of looking for better way to make it better, and just settle for the money they making from Google Adsense . . . . If Nairaland allow Nairaland to be a thing of the past, they, you will blame no one but the owner of Nairaland . . . . By the way, if you think of how some things are happening, you would wanna be on a safe sife with some things . . . .constant improvement is the key and always looking for ways to make your business better |

Fhemmmy: You guys just repeated what I told Seun sometime ago. Google forum will definitely come. I was shocked that Seun switched into defensive mode after an old friend told him to upgrade Nairaland. I told him thesame thing but thesame fickle lot who will be the first run to google forum went like "why change a winning blah blah blah" The problem is Nigerians are not as innovative as our counterparts in even some African countries. We just like to copy. Then sit down happy with the meagre adsense income we get. |

In China, Google had issues simply because the Chinese government realized the dominance of google will make it impossible for her citizens(local businesses) to compete. Fantastic, but will they implement? Even the Government officials don't know how to open their official emails. Mtchewwwwwww. |

Re: How Google Is Killing Nigerian Online Businesses by Fhemmmy: 12:11am On Dec 10, 2011 |
1stCitizen: You think that is meager? They are making like 5000$$ a month and in a nation like Nigeria, that is a lot of money . . . it takes someone with great mind and idea not to get a swollen head over such money. So for them to be able to compete, they need to stop worshiping such paycheck and see how they can be the one paying someone 5000$$ a month. |

make una sit down there dey blame google for killing naija businesses while the others are making inroads into our market; mocality.com.ng and dealfish.com.ng are kenyan companies FYI. Sit up fellow web developers and lets give this foreigners a run for their money jor! |

Google is not killing anything for anyone. We have more websites than we can count, and our visitors are in no way affected by google. Only the lazy complain. |
Re: How Google Is Killing Nigerian Online Businesses by Hodaya(m): 5:50am On Dec 10, 2011 |
occam: Forums are content driven, no doubt about that. You need to look at accessibility because i spend more hours on a Google web product than i do on Nairaland, the implication of this is that whenever content is shared on the assumed/foreseen Google Forum most of us will are only a click away.We all(at least most) have either Yahoo or Gmail and they will use this to their advantage and many more. Haven't you noticed the ads bar on the recently upgraded gmail, you really don't need to look further. And for those saying our local businesses should compete, i've got a question. It is just like saying Enyimba should compete with Manchester City for the best players and in a competition. |

google is here to plunder. But just as google plus will fail , almost all there products will fail. Gnbo is number 1. Because clients now know that a free domain is an insult. But will google trader fail? Me nah think so. For your information google is challenging nigerian news papers ! Check news.google.com.ng . Its just unbelievable what those slave masters believe. They cant invent anything, because they dont fully understand the nigerian market, and they cant make naija webmaster their manager. All they can do is copy working nigerian models and try to stamp out the original inventors, then introduce google adwords, adsense bla bla bla . |

Hey, What are we talking about here. Google is just doing their business as normal business people. Nigerian web designers can also create Nigeria search engine as china did. for years now there is no more Google in china. Chinese web designer created their own search engine which is made-in china .com and more like it. when u click Google .cn in china they will take you to google.hk . which is google hongkong. we cant just keep seat one place and keep complaining every day every year. Do something to show you are a great web developer i know some company will come up for sponsor .Even when you have a big one Google it self will come up asking you to sale it to them. thanks. stop being a good complainer. |
Re: How Google Is Killing Nigerian Online Businesses by irohadis: 4:12pm On Dec 10, 2011 |
Nonsense!! First of all Dealfish and Tradestable are not Nigerian companies. Nairalist is soooo uninspiring it actually deserves to die. For other Nigerian internet companies worried about google, I can only say to you: put on your thinking hat. Imagine why the Americans had such a hard time against the Talibans in the mountains of Tora Bora. The Talibans know the mountains better than the Americans. So with AK47s they held up against the Americans and their high tech amour for 10 years. So google can't just fly in as a behemoth and win in Nigeria. Unless, they are competing with you in a conventional space where the competitors have brought nothing new. Dealfish and Tradestable are regular models of the listing service replicated in Nigeria. They rubbished Nairalist because they were more organised and better resourced for advertising. Now a bigger boy is in the game. They can only survive by out-innovating google. Nigerian internet users will be the winners for it. |

[b][size=16pt]The moaners are moaning again, instead of getting on with the job. Stop moaning and start competing if you've got what it takes. It takes BRAINS + IDEAS = PUT YOUR COMPETITOR OUT OF BUSINESS, send them home! But can Nigerian Technologist handle it?? Naaah, try 30yrs time maybe! ![]() But then, Google would have rocketted to the skies in the race, doubt it?? Wait, you will see it! So, instead of complaining, compete by tasking your brains and minds as mentioned by Upright750 below about the Chinese putting them out of business in China - why not do the same. Spend time tasking your brains and innovating smart ideas in this Industry, that would put Nigeria in the world map of innovators. Instead of copying, catching up on other peoples ideas and moaning about it. ![]() If na women now, una brain for done get power and begin dey abuse una heart out. ![]() Therefore for the love of our Country, do something beneficial once, for the Nigerian people. Send Google packing, if you can, moaner! ![]() ![]() |

I have fears for local initiatives like nairaland.com. What is the use of the traffic coming to nairaland if those registered cannot showcase their businesses. We just come here to gist. Facebook, google are allowing marketing on their sites. There is a google trader now that you can post ads for free. Google is aggressively marketing it. In facebook, paying for ads is a matter of choice. If you have a huge fan and like page and so many connected friends, you can advertise anything you want to your audience. Unless nairaland and the owner make this site attractive for business, it will remain a gist site and serious minded people will take their traffic to sites offered by companies like google and facebook where we can get value for visiting those sites. I hope someone is listening. Dare |

Google aint killing no Nigerian online business. Please leave Google to operate in peace. We Naijarians should be innovative and creative and we would set up businesses that would give Google headache. Remember Google is successful but it has failed in certain businesses it has tried, this is because those in those businesses fought back by innovation and creativity. |
