Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has announced that the platform will share user information with law enforcement when users are suspected of illegal activities. This decision comes after Durov’s arrest by French authorities for failing to cooperate in investigations related to illegal activities on Telegram.




In a significant policy shift, Telegram will now share user IP addresses and phone numbers with law enforcement in response to valid legal requests, reversing its previous stance that all chats were private. This change follows CEO Pavel Durov's arrest in France for allegedly facilitating the distribution of child sexual abuse material and other crimes. Durov stated that a team of moderators has been actively removing unsafe content and that updates to the platform’s search function aim to discourage criminal activity.





Durov, a French citizen, was arrested on August 28 after arriving in Paris from Azerbaijan. French prosecutors accused him of failing to provide information to police about illegal activities on Telegram. While Telegram previously faced bans in Iran and Russia for its refusal to comply with authorities, Russia later lifted its ban. In the aftermath of Durov's arrest, Telegram asserted that he had nothing to hide and deemed it "absurd" to hold the company accountable for users violating its policies.
