Why I Rap In Igbo – Phyno by voiceoftheupcom: 3:47pm On Nov 18 |
Nigerian musician Phyno has explained why he decided to rap in Igbo, even though he started his career rapping in English. He shared his thoughts on the latest episode of the In My Opinion podcast. Phyno revealed that while growing up, he was influenced by legendary rappers like Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, 2Pac, and Notorious B.I.G., which shaped his initial style. At the beginning of his career, he rapped in English, drawing from this Western influence. However, he later made a deliberate choice to rap in Igbo. Eyes Of Lagos reports, He said, “When I decided to make music my career, I asked myself, ‘What do I have to offer that’s unique? If I go to the UK or America, will I sell English to them when it’s their own language? But if I bring Igbo to them, it’s something they don’t have—it’s unique.’” Phyno also explained that growing up in an Igbo-speaking, highlife-influenced neighborhood shaped his sound and inspired him to showcase his culture. He said he now incorporates traditional Igbo attire into his style to stand out and represent his roots. By rapping in Igbo, Phyno aims to share something distinctive with the global audience, proudly embracing and promoting his heritage. https://eyesoflagos.com/2024/11/18/why-i-rap-in-igbo-phyno/ 1 Like

I remember this guy used to rap in English when he came to Lagos. I think Illbliss was who made him start rapping in Igbo. Multiply should be his first Ibo song but it was with lots of English mixes. Ghost Mode gave him more respect |

Kennyswag:And tomorrow you want the white man to like you? Though the two tribes Y&I can be annoying you can't hate a whole tribe because of a scallywags among them. |
