Please, encourage her to study mathematics.

Mathematics is key. Mathematics is important.

Being good in mathematics opens a good path to success in the future. Either in STEM or finance.

Never encourage her to do arts and humanities. Except as 2nd or 3rd degree.

Personally, aside Mathematics, English, and Computer studies, students should not be forced to study other (irrelevant) subjects in high school.

Those 3 subjects are enough. Bulky subjects makes learning difficult. That's why many students finds it hard to do well in school.

Mathematics is a sweet difficult subject. It requires patience, determination, and time.

To help your daughter, find a good mathematics home teacher for her.

Break the mathematics curriculum into weeks. Use her JSS1 textbook to do so. Follow her home tutor to do this. From there you can track her progress.

Expose her to mathematics videos - quizzes, movies, competition, etc.

Reward her for every topic she learned and understand. Test her with the textbook questions. This will encourage her to learn faster and find the subject enjoyable.

Everything good takes time. Including mathematics.

Thanks.

She still has time to explore and level up. Try to get her to explore the linguistics terrain. She could study English and Linguistics and add two foreign languages to her repertoire of language.

As a linguistic major, she could take further trainings and certifications in Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and earn her cool money. I know what my colleague earns as a Speech Language Pathologist.

There's a lot for your daughter to do but patience, career guidance, interest and above all, divine direction and providence is key.

As a kid, I was excellent in English but today, na only God know where I make money from 😂😂

This life!!!

Most of us were good at a Particular subject back then.......But that didn't make us look as if we were dullards.....I was so good in physics back in secondary school that when I got into polytechnic,my first semester physics courses,I didn't even study hard but got A's in all of them.......But when it comes to mathematics,if I pass self,I dey imagine how come about grin. ,cuz I wasn't good at it all...

Op,you should sit your daughter down and reason with her.....At least she's still very young and very much likely to catch up......But in case she isn't interested in maths, don't force her...... Just let her choose what's on her mind and go after it ..

You mean you are good in physics but not good in Maths?

What career path do I advise for my daughter? Currently in J.S.S 1, she's so good at English language which has earned her several awards and commendations right from her primary school.

Although, this is her first examination at Faith Academy Secondary School, but she has started to draw the usual accolades and commendations both from her class teacher, particularly her English teacher who walked up to her in class to single her for praise as she scored 100% percent in English Language which the subject teacher acknowledged that the feat was unprecedented from her students.

In contrast, she is not as good in mathematics as she does in English language, which can be traced to the poor mathematics background from her previous schools, but I have made several arrangements to encourage her so that she can improve and get better in mathematics.

My career advice and counsel for her from the outset is for her to study Nursing or any discipline in the medical profession, but with this development, I am thinking otherwise, of she has to shift focus and major in Arts & humanities or to put extra more effort to proceed into the medical profession, particularly to become a Nurse or Doctor as we have envisaged and for which she has a strong passion.

At this level, it's somewhat a bit late but not insurmountable. She should take a gap year to cover her weak maths background. She shouldn't choose or try Pharmacy at all so that Maths will not later become her stumbling block in Pharmacy school then, God forbid, gets kicked out.
Why not let her pursue a career in Lingustics/Communications and Language Arts?

There's still time to level up ,just encourage her in mathematics.

At first she might drop in English to catch up with Maths but she will eventually balance up .

The same issue happened to me when I was in the same class.

You are an observant parent for taking note early.

The following steps will be helpful for your daughter because the application of Mathematics is a lifelong asset and she must be persuaded and talked-through to take steps to like the subject.

1, Her Mathematics teacher must be top-notch and easily understandable. He would be her first touch-point to either liking the subject or disliking it. The teachers role especially at elementary stage determines her easy navigation on the subject.

2, Visual Aids and Videos. The "Pandemic babies" have over a million eBooks, easy to learn videos, cartoons and others to aid the tricks on easy steps to problem solving in Maths.

3, Encourage a book / eBook club with kids that have shown early gift and interest in the subject.

4, Parental Reward - The father should make a promise to her and challenge her that if she comes tops, he would reward her with xyz incentive or a special gift.

5, Storytelling & Modelling - The kid will be told stories individuals who had deficiency in Mathematics and we're able to overcome and it changed their lives today.

Note that developed countries invest in young talents with Proficiency in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics and her childhood tutorials may determine her getting higher chances for international exposure.

Good one Daddy !

OP, isnt this too early at JSS 1. The child is barely 10 years old and you're alreay pressurizing her. There is still amble of time for her to learn and do well in Mathematics. Let her be for now. Let her be focus. As time goes, the unknown will unfolds.

The trick is to start tutoring her with primary 2 or 3 arithmetic/mathematics. Give her 10-12 months and see her flourishing

She is not too young to start from the basics that is 1+1, practice every examples and all exercises. Preferably get her British textbooks, they are better at teaching than our modern textbooks..

The guy u quoted, I understand him very well.

One can be good in Physics which needs a logical mind but not good in Mathematics especially the one at advanced level that is so abstract. The kind of mathematics that's so easy for Physicists is Mental Mathematics.

I have seen very good mathematicians who don't make such high grades in Physics because they go in straight with direct calculative mind and abstract mind but miss out the logical part.

Op's daughter can still do Nursing but not in Nigeria and she needs Biology more. However, a knowledge of Mathematics, Chemistry and even some Physics gives one an edge and makes one a fast thinker and a more balanced Nurse.

Start early to build the interest in her and get a teacher that teaches Mathematics etc with fun, play way method.

It's still very early. You must get her sound maths tutor and before her jsce she should be doing fine on her own in math.
Also get a varieties of math textbook both local and foreign to help ..

Please focus her energy on what she's good at. Probably nursing is not her calling. She could become one of the best lawyers in the world (many Barristers I know are terrible in maths).

I would rather focus her energy on Art to become a Barrister (in future chief judge grin)

She can study English, linguistics, or law.

Anyway, continue to encourage her and let her follow her interest. Tomorrow she might be a novelist and short-story writer like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

I was exactly like your daughter back when I was in Secondary School. Poor in Maths, or so I thought. Excellent in English.

I had A1 in English.
P7 in Maths.

I left school, read on my own, wrote GCE and had an A3 in Maths. It was before the current grading system.

I cracked the code of Maths, which is simple: Constant Practice, and understanding of basic principles.

I went on to University and am now an Engineer.

My advice?
JS 1 is too early to form an opinion about your daughter. Try to encourage her to practice math, and find ways to pique her interest in it, because, whatever her career choices are, math will be compulsory for her throughout secondary school. The worst thing you can do s let her believe she cannot be good in math from this early.

Physics doesn't fully become abstract at advanced level. At advanced level, Physics can still be manipulated logically even if it is Nuclear, Quantum or Special Relativity Physics. Mathematics has a lot of 'prove that'....'summation....' all not making interesting sense( lol). This was why a book binder who was almost like a voracious reader could be a self taught physicist, an experimental Physicist.

One can be very good in English and Mathematics as a Physicist but the kind of Mathematics is the mental mathematics, every day type where some fast, logical thinking is required.

Mathematics class can be a bit boring to some Physicists at advanced levels eg 200- 400L. Physics is more applicable/ applied.

Dear daughter,
I am sorry to say that your love for English is simply not enough and cannot take you very far. You cannot run from mathematics. Trust me. I thought I escaped it in just and sss intra school exams only to meet it in waec and neco. I thought I escaped it then with a c5 only to meet it in hundred level mth 101, 102 and 103. I thought I escaped it then with a very weak pass only to meet it in biostatistics both in 300l and even in Msc program. So you see, you just have to zero your mind and conquer your hatred or fear of maths so that your academic journey will not be full of anxiety and heartache. Universities will not even admit without a C in math these days.

Thankfully, God did not give us a spirit of fear but of sound mind and good reasoning! That is what the bible says. Always pray against the spirit of fear and for a sound mind and good reasoning when you are learning or studying your maths. Even if it takes you resitting a couple of exams, it's worth it.

Get her a private tutor for mathematics to help her improve. It's just a sign that she's got a higher verbal aptitude than quantitative aptitude.

It's good you noticed this early enough.
