Most of us were good at a Particular subject back then.......But that didn't make us look as if we were dullards.....I was so good in physics back in secondary school that when I got into polytechnic,my first semester physics courses,I didn't even study hard but got A's in all of them.......But when it comes to mathematics,if I pass self,I dey imagine how come about grin. ,cuz I wasn't good at it all...

Op,you should sit your daughter down and reason with her.....At least she's still very young and very much likely to catch up......But in case she isn't interested in maths, don't force her...... Just let her choose what's on her mind and go after it ..

shut up with the lies ....if your background in mathematics is poor , you can never excel in physics. Mathematics is the language of the universe while physics is the study of the universe.

you cannot understand the universe except you've mastered the language of the universe.

What career path do I advise for my daughter? Currently in J.S.S 1, she's so good at English language which has earned her several awards and commendations right from her primary school.

Although, this is her first examination at Faith Academy Secondary School, but she has started to draw the usual accolades and commendations both from her class teacher, particularly her English teacher who walked up to her in class to single her for praise as she scored 100% percent in English Language which the subject teacher acknowledged that the feat was unprecedented from her students.

In contrast, she is not as good in mathematics as she does in English language, which can be traced to the poor mathematics background from her previous schools, but I have made several arrangements to encourage her so that she can improve and get better in mathematics.

My career advice and counsel for her from the outset is for her to study Nursing or any discipline in the medical profession, but with this development, I am thinking otherwise, of she has to shift focus and major in Arts & humanities or to put extra more effort to proceed into the medical profession, particularly to become a Nurse or Doctor as we have envisaged and for which she has a strong passion.

Career advisor and Counsellors, come in and drop your expertise.

A career at Arise Tv is in her future...for people who like to speak English but have nothing in their heads.

Physics and mathematics go hand in hand. If you are not good in mathematics, you will definitely struggle with physics.

How's this possible ? Knowledge in Maths gives a student an edge in Physics. How did you do it? How were you able to cope in all calculations in Physics without knowing Maths?

Mathematics and English are not on the same level, I wonder why people always compare them. Even someone who hasn't been to school can be good in English.
Re: Advise His Daughter Who Is Too Good In English But Poor In Mathematics by teepain: 2:33pm On Nov 21
Well done @op. The problem is half-solved because you have identified the root cause which is the fact that your daughter's previous mathematics teachers did a poor job.

How I will go about it with the steps are enumerated below:

1. I will sit with her and praise her intelligence (citing the accolades from her English teacher as proof) and emphasize that she has the ability to gain mastery of any subject with her gift.

2. I will challenge her to use her intelligence to work harder at her maths and tell her that we are in it together as a team. And that I will provide all the assistance in terms of resources required for the task.

3. I will engage a maths teacher that has a proven record of imparting skills to students at my daughter's level for extra coaching

4. I will get her a good maths textbook that has a workbook and make her practice all the exercises.

Note:
Mathematics is one of the easiest subjects to learn because it is more of routine. Once you understand the procedure for solving a problem, you would be able to solve similar problems any other time.

Sometimes, you don't force things on children especially where it comes to education/academics. My daughter, just like her father, disliked mathematics from her kindergarten days. As a father, I tried my best to encourage her to do better using myself as example. I ended with an A3 in Mathematics in WAEC after putting in a lot of effort. Though she started pulling her weight once in a while in her senior years in secondary school, she kept reminding me that she didn't need mathematics to study Law in the university. But I never stopped encouraging her even though I knew she was right. When her SSCE result came out, she aced mathematics. Today she's studying Law, a career she chose right from primary school.

Mathematics wasn't compulsory in your high school curriculum?

It's only compulsory in the first two years, but once you reach the third year, you can choose whether to continue with the subject or drop it... I chose to drop it because it was showing me flames and did the remaining three years without it.

Our department of education is aware that some kids like me are not meant to solve for X... grin grin grin

@Abujaexpress

Many people will tell you to hire a math teacher. Not necessarily.

In fact hire an exceptional good English teacher for her and allow her compete in English exams.

If you drag her to study maths more to be good, you'll drag her to average overall, if she's average in maths and pass her exams that enough, but in areas she's good at, fan it to flames; that's the life of Bill Gate.

As for for her career, let her grow into it, don't make a choice for her except if that's the template God gave you for her before birth. Else allow her.

But emphasis on making sure she practices more of what she knows best and be average in other's.

She should study Mathematics or Computer Science, it's too early to decide. Maths is very easy just let her fall in love with solving like 40 questions per day, create a strong reward system for it and see the effect

I understand that your post had an undertone of bragging garnished with some doses of unripe ego but calm down a little and deal with the situation instead of seeking irrelevant ideas all over the internet.

My wife used to believe that my son was poor in mathematics. Many times she will want us to discuss it, but I'll always tell her that the boy has no problem with any of his subjects because I know exactly what I was going to do.

Few months to his JSSCE exams, I asked about his preparations, he said he was not feeling prepared for the exams.... Yes! That was the moment I have been waiting for. I stopped him from going to the regular school, got a new private teacher to return him to factory reset, clear the rubbish that had been deposited in his brain and jumped started him again.

He got 7 distinctions (including mathematics) and 4 credits in the exams. I didn't stopped at that, I threw him straight into physics, chemistry and biology classes immediately. Today, he's leading everyone with a serious gap in his class.

Asking a career path for a jss1 child is absurd and ridiculous.
Re: Advise His Daughter Who Is Too Good In English But Poor In Mathematics by iguita: 4:32pm On Nov 21
I was going to say this.

She is still young, you can still teach her. Most importantly, na make she dey successful dey most important,

tctrills:
You are very lucky, she is still a child and at this stage, she can learn anything you want her to.
Maths is very important and she needs to be good at it, no excuse.
But you the parent needs the advice not her.
The question you should be asking yourself is, what is the best learning method for her.
You mentioned that she had a weak background in mathematics so I suggest you go back to the basics.
Go as far back as you need. Start from primary 1 mathematics if needs be. Slowly build that background and she will grow from there.
Also, set a target of 10 maths problems a day for her with a price at the end of each month she meets her goal.
Do this and come back in a year to post about her progress.

I am not an educationist or a counselor but this is the method I used for my children: I planted in them aspiration and imagination of what they could be and make them see the reason it is achievable. When a child sees this, he/ she will stretch beyond limits. Secondly, apart from this, the difficulty in Mathematics stems from hatred for the teachers who may not know how to teach, ssme goes for chemistry. Let your child know that he needs to look beyond the teachers to achieve his aims. Almost all professional courses demand a credit in Mathematics for admission. If he can be good in one, he can be in all.

I have a child that doesn't like 'book' . One day, he asked me, 'which isthe most difficult of all subjects?'
My response was, 'the one you don't need'

I wasn't so good in Mathematics also. My uncle put in effort to change that. This started in SS1 and he'd teach me a topic then I'd proceed to solve all the questions in the chapter. I started getting good and it later became my best subject.

During my first year studying Medical Laboratory Science, I got all the questions I answered correctly in MTH101 exam.
These days I solve maths to unwind and "destress".

She's still young, she's a sponge now and she'll assimilate if she puts in the effort. She can be whoever and whatever she wants to be. There's no limit.
