Peter Obi Takes Position On Tinubu's Tax Bill by emkz: 7:21pm On Dec 02, 2024
The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential elections took to his Twitter handle to express his thoughts on the Tax bills in the National Assembly.

Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it.

However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate. A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.

Matters of this magnitude require extensive deliberation and careful consideration—they should never be rushed.

Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs.
Such public hearing would also enable the broadest spectrum of public opinion to be reflected in public policy.

When considering tax reforms and similar issues, it is insufficient to focus solely on the benefits to the government, particularly in terms of increasing revenue collection.

We must also take into account the overall impact on the nation and the sustainability of all its regions.

Furthermore, the government must sensitize the people and secure their buy-in for any policy changes.

Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance, and without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail.

Let us prioritize transparency, deliberation, and public engagement in charting the path forward. This is how we build a truly participatory democracy.

A new Nigeria is POssible!

What Atiku said:
I have followed the intense public discourse on the Tax Reform Bills with keen interest.

Nigerians are united in their call for a fiscal system that promotes justice, fairness, and equity. They are loud and clear that the fiscal system we seek to promote must not exacerbate the uneven development of the federating units by enhancing the status of a few states while unduly penalising others.

I call for objectivity and transparency in the conduct of the public hearing being organised by our representatives in the National Assembly. As a concerned stakeholder, I firmly believe that transparency and objectivity are essential for promoting accountability, good governance, and public trust in policy-making. The public hearing process must facilitate open and inclusive participation by all stakeholders, including Civil Society Organizations, traditional institutions, politicians, public officials, and subject matter experts.

In this wise, I call on the NASS to revisit and make public the resolutions of the National Economic Council, a key stakeholder and an important organ of the state with the constitutional power to advise the President concerning the economic affairs of the Federation.

The NASS must be appropriately guided and ensure that in the final analysis, the contents of the Bills align with the interests of the vast majority of Nigerians. -AA

Let's now compare what each said. Atiku is in red, Obi in black:

Notice that Peter Obi had no originality in his submissions and only mouthed what Atiku said.

The question to both of them: have they read the bills?

The concerns raised about this bill are justified because Tinubu has shown time and time again that he cannot be trusted.

All his policies have been catastrophic, inflicting severe pain, hunger, and starvation on the citizens.

Why the rush to pass such an important bill like the tax bill, which will have a far-reaching effect on Nigerians?

Just like Mr Atiku, Mr Obi have decided to sit on the fence on a very critical matter, I wonder if they even have the ball to push such bill in the first place.

The president have proven to be an hasty clueless disaster in making decisions that affects the survival of the Country that's one of the major reasons people are skeptical about anything that comes out from his bulaba mouth. No one is confident with agberonomics.

President Tinubu always work with consultants, take note of the word always. This bill must have been well thought even before the passing to the house for debate.

Let those who have issue with the bill to point out to what precisely are the issues with and and the possible solution for rectification.

Taiwo Oyedele was partner at PWC and Africa Tax Leader before he was made Chairman of Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. Zach Adedeji graduated first class from OAU and rose to corporate finance manager in a multinational.

I have only one request: those opposing the tax bill need to come out and debate them.

If they have the balls.

you people never make any sense in your debate! That is how you people went and rushed the coastal road without any public input.......imagine building a monstrous 6-lane concrete highway........just hundreds of feet from 100% of our Atlantic coastline potentially destroying the scenic and ecological ambience of our coastlie..........where have you ever heard of such nonsense?

Please how is the coastal highway 100 of feet from the Atlantic coastline?

I don't know how old you are or how much you are aware of your history. The plan for the coastal highway is more than six decades old! Infact, Buhari was in Calabar in 2015 to turn the sod for the highway. It never took off.

Tinubu took it off.

Some of you just turned 18 two years ago and want to teach the rest of us what you don't know. By your statements, many of you are anti-progress and anti-development. You are grossly retrogressive.

A coastal highway connects cities and opens frontiers for economic development. It is to ease the movement of goods and services as well as create jobs for our people.

Many of you hate development, but want abroad life. That is insanity. The first rule of insanity is that the insane is not aware of his unsanitary insanity.

It seems the same handler handling Atiku's account is the same exact person Obi is using.

The below is currently being done as we speak in Channels TV townhall. For the past few months, Tax reform committee have being going all around consulting and explaining.

Peter Obi is an opposition and I like his use of word. He does not support or oppose in that sense (He is not bold enough to take a stance) and his neutrality only shows he think the bill is okay. So we should accept his speech in good faith.

However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate. A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.

Face the north and leave the Igbos alone.

The Igbos don't have any issues with the tax bill.
My comment is a personal opinion, not the opinion of the Igbos.
Again, face the north.
