Nine victims of the stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, have been discharged from Maitama District Hospital following Saturday’s tragic incident, News360 Nigeria reports.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, ordered free medical treatment for all those injured during the church’s annual food outreach program. The stampede resulted in 10 fatalities, including four children, and left 10 others injured.

A statement by Lere Olayinka, the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, disclosed that government hospitals have been instructed to provide free treatment to the victims. Wike also directed that police approval must be obtained for future public palliative distributions to prevent similar tragedies.

Expressing condolences, Wike prayed for the repose of the souls lost and pledged that the government would ensure proper care for the injured. He praised the swift response of security agencies, which he said helped manage the situation effectively.

Meanwhile, the Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, also extended his condolences to the church and the victims’ families. He confirmed that nine of the injured had been discharged, while urging organizations conducting similar activities to involve security agencies and use organized distribution methods, such as coupons and group divisions, to avoid overcrowding.

Engr. Mohammed further encouraged residents to utilize the 112 toll-free emergency line for prompt assistance in case of disasters.

This stampede is becoming alarming, but the reality and reasons of it is hunger, nothing more, I wish something could be done without gathering people for a gift.

We should expect more stampede as most of us are greedy, selfish, lack integrity and self control.

We can't even queue for items and have faith even in the church!

If you see anyone who is not holding any political position that is supporting this government, check his genealogy, one of his fore fathers was a slave.

The organisers are to partly to blame. Did they not hear about the Oyo one a few days ago?
We are also impatient as a people. The effect of wanting to jump line in small crowd is fatal in large crowds.
The govt is wholly to blame here. This is an annual programme and we didn't hear of fatalities before, so govt policies that are making Nigerians poorer are wholly to blame.
May the souls of all departed rest in peace.

What does he mean by police approval?. Will police from the approval go and carryout crowd management?

So what are you guys doing to reduce to the lowest minimum the rate at which people rush for parliatives

People are hungry, hence the rush to get free cups of rice...

We should anticipate more chaos, as many of us can be greedy, selfish, and lacking in integrity and self-control. We struggle to wait in line for items and even have difficulty trusting one another in places like church.
