The Bauchi State Governor has said Mr Tinubu is calling for anarchy unless he stops Tax reform.

Mr Bala claims with the tax reform, the North will not be able to pay salaries.

He claims the policy favours only one section of the country.

So this Governor believes it is his way, or no way.

Oga you paid supporters from the SW axis think you can turn this issue to be about North Versus South so that you can get away with it.

Tinubu can not be trusted by Nigerians after promising heaven and earth with proceeds of subsidy removal yet nothing to show.

This bill is dead on arrival maybe another administration who has the trust of the people but not Tinubu

Get your lazy ass to work .
There’s no free lunch anywhere .
The spate of stampede that bedeviled the country recently only points to how impoverished the whole country is .

Everyone needs to sit up and contribute their quota .

Tinubu messed the whole thing up .

If I were in his shoes , I’d empower the states already in court to see the case to logical conclusion .
VAT is not in the exclusive list .

He should prop up the ND sates to request for upward review of the derivation . Let’s go back to true federalism where the states take care of the center and not the other way round .

With these , most of Nigeria’s problem would be solved .

From insecurity to poverty etc

Let states have their own police , prison etc

If you want to practice sharia in your region, you’d be free to do that without complaints .

Nigeria is running out of time already . The collapse of the country is imminent if nothing drastic is done

VAT is not in the exclusive list and FG has no business legislating on it .

The President didn't mess up anything. The current arrangement of allowing the Federal government collect VAT on behalf of the states is better.

Under the military (Babangida or Abacha), each State was allowed to collect sales tax (VAT). However, no State was able to collect much of the tax, probably because the technology and knowledge was not available then.

After 1999, the new civilian government reverted to central collection by the federal government.

As you rightly said, VAT is not on the exclusive list, which means each State can enact its own VAT/Sales tax law. River State under Mr Wike took the matter to court and won. I recall Northern Governors were pleading with Wike not to continue with the case 'cause they knew it would be to the disadvantage of poor states.

Yet, some of them are now trying to frustrate a reform of the current outdated arrangement.

No problem, it just needs one Southern state to return to Court, and if as expected, the Court rule that each State can collect its own sales tax, then the poorer States will be in much deeper trouble.

If each state collects its own VAT, states like Lagos, Oyo, Kano, Rivers etc will be rolling in unprecedented revenue, while several poor states will go into abject poverty.

If that's what the Northern Governors want, that's fine.

The tax bills are even still considerate, setting aside more money for distribution to poorer States. So, I don't understand the extreme stance of some of the Governors.

The bills will pass anyway. Nothing to worry about.

Everyday I look at northern states and see how docile the leadership in the north is, the tax reform bill will impoverish the north, only then can we really think of growth.
These days, governors collect fat cheques from FG and go to vacation and pilgrimage without improving their state, the society will never grow that way, never, the bill needs to pass.

Wow game theory in Nigeria is interesting. Any state can throw a spanner in the works at any time. What leverage do they have regarding VAT if that's the case? Different tax structures between states are beneficial. The one size fits all approach actually makes them uncompetitive. Tax policy is one reason people and businesses choose to move places or do in certain places. (Obviously there's other reasons)

Example 1: Many people in Vancouver Washington shop in Portland Oregon because the Portland has no sales tax.

Example 2: California business moves to Texas because there's no corporate income taxes.

Example 3: Individual moves moves New York to Florida because there's no personal income tax.

You are educating them and the same time threatening them on how they cannot survive even if they accept to try it.
What should I call you now?

Call him the harbinger of doom. They're in a catch-22. Change will come they have to adapt. Become more pro business and advocate for more state autonomy on setting rates and discarding taxes all together. You would basically get the United States where 50 states compete for business and people. Look at how income taxes are different between states. VAT and Sales are no different.

It's in their interest to take your money. That's why they have no issue throwing you in jail for tax evasion. If a state is too unfriendly to business they'll simply leave if they have options. People will leave or vote you out. If your state is incompetent that's your business.

This illiterate maigworo thinks it's still business as usual. It will favour only one section? So, he is admitting that commodities and products are used mainly in only one section of the country, while other sections destroy them, right? I thought it was only their youths that sniff soakaway and burning tyre fumes?

It was the Bauchi Governor that threatened the President.

Exactly my sentiments. Tinubu has proven to be extremely tribalistic and so can't be trusted. If he foolishly goes ahead with that rubbish, then North and East should team up and remove him immediately and elect a nationalist president who will reverse it as first task on getting into Aso rock.

Tinubu is already feeling like he is invincible but I like it because pride goes before a nasty fall.

If someone like Osinbajo or Obasanjo from SW is the one proposing the so-called tax reforms, I will support it 100% percent because I know they're not primitively tribalistic like Tinubu.

Someone who is busy cornering everything will do worse with the secretive tax reforms.

He shouldn't push his luck too far because an Igbo adage says that one man can't cook for the community but the community can easily cook for one man and he can't finish the meal.
