You talk like you're being paid by MTN. How long will you guys keep defending indiscriminate, arbitrary tariff increments all in a bid to "ridicule" the government? 100% increment? Haba. That's besides all the hidden charges that makes a 1min airtime finish in 40 seconds. If I remember correctly this was how you people kept defending DStv those days until their greed spiraled out of control and everyone started looking for alternatives.
Maybe when you hold your leaders accountable next time, people like MTN will stop fleecing us.

The NCC, senate and HOR are aware of these but ofcourse, MTN will bribe their way and have their way over Nigerians.

Lessons will be learnt

It's a blessing in disguise for distracted people. You're supposed to go to the internet with a streamlined view of what you want to get from it. Instead of going there without a plan.

Imagine going to the market without knowing what to buy. You go to social media and you're just scrolling like someone who's brain has been hijacked by another entity.

Possession doesn't happen when you're flying with a broom stick at night. It also happens when you find yourself doing something you know is detrimental to your health, but keep doing it regardless... smoking, mindless social media binging, masturbation and so on

This news is same as when people complain that the price of sugar has gone up...
When all I see is a blessing that the price of diabetes had gone up.

"The price of vegetable oil has gone up. What do I do?"

That's a trigger for you to look for alternative that are healthy and less expensive.
Or where do you think vegetable oil cones from?
You think vegetable oil comes from crushed vegetables huh?

PS: this might affect a lot of companies but it'll give room for alternatives, instead of transferring costs on customers.

At your post script, cost will still be transferred to the final consumers, this is Nigeria and we can't pretend like we don't know one or two things about how things is being done over here.

This will promote Internet calls more.

Anyway, with time we will hardly make normal calls as almost everyone will be using Internet calls which is far too cheaper.
As time goes on, they will look into it, trust me, it's like when the devil decides to give one a gift or let me say a Greek gift.

Airtel are doing absolutely rubbish with their hourly data plans, you'd get 2GB for 200 naira for an hour and yet there will no network coverage to even use 100-500MB of such data before an hour elapse.

It's crazy, man.

Have you seen any business that their price has been constant for the last 2 years, name 1?

Even CBN increased their "price" (interest rate) about 5 times in 2024.

Do you think businesses are run on charity? Next time vote a man with sense otherwise you will pay the price from your pocket

I find some words off putting like Nigerians are resilient, I asked what's resilient about a group of people who can't hold her leaders accountable but would rather device a coping mechanism to carry on in the face of the failure of the elected government, it's pitiful, man.

Doubling or tripling the hustle isn't even proportional again because the cost of basic stuff in the market isn't pocket friendly anymore. Until we elect government who are ready to be held accountable we will keep playing the game of musical chairs.

Business is not run on emotion. It needs to also survive to keep servicing you. Even if you run your private business, you will do the same. Note that they have not increased their tarrifs since Tinubu tumultuous economy. Also they have to pay staffs too. Truth is cost of doing business has gone off the roof, you will agree with me if you are being honest.

Do these people care at all?
These companies are busy paying their directors hundreds of millions of Naira annually but are always in a rush to increase tariffs, not even by 10 or 20% but by 100%, forgetting what Nigerians are going through right now.

If they're no more interested in the Nigerian market they should sell up instead of passing their frustration to Nigerians who are going through worst daily. [/quote]

You are the one trying to defend the indefensible. Has the naira lost over 200% or not? What MTN submitted was an intent the NCC will most likely approve an increase of 10-20% tariff increase for them because the bad policies of our leaders have made the ease of doing business in Nigeria much harder

Bro ....the guy explained why the tariff needs to be increased. Do you realize MTN is a business?... and not a charity? ... and the purpose of a business is to make profit? When the Naira keeps devaluing... do you expect the operational cost of MTN to remain the same? ...do you expect salaries to be the same? The regulators will have two options .... approve a raise in tariff or subsidize the increase. If not ...why would MTN not pull out? Then what? Would you run a business if the operational cost is N100 M and the income is N80M? I guess you will .... so as not to add suffering to the people. See how long that will last .

It takes miracles to do business here...
SmartPolician:
I cannot blame them. Just imagine that the value of naira has depreciated by over 200% since Escobar brought his cursed administration to this country.

These are multinational companies that repatriate their funds to their headquarters in USD. Their earnings have since that time been slashed by over 200% - thanks to a president who knows zilch about leadership.

What I find really disturbing is that MTN spends 50% of their profits powering their base stations across the country. It takes a lot of guts to do business in this country.
