Trump Slams 14% Tariff On Nigerian Exports, Others (Full List) by InfoGuru118: 12:23am On Apr 03
US President Donald Trump has slammed a 14 percent reciprocal tariff on all Nigerian goods entering the US as the much talked about “Liberation Day” tariffs comes into effect, News360 Nigeria reports.

Trump had said that countries would face a tariff rate at half the level they charge the US, as deemed by the White House, with a minimum tariff rate of 10 percent, saying that the calculation included non-monetary trade barriers and currency manipulation.

The 14 percent tariffs imposed on Nigeria, according to Trump, is against 27 percent charged to the US by Nigeria.

The new tariffs, which affected 185 countries, has therefore, ended months of anxious wait and uncertainty, which had plummeted stocks around the US, Europe and Asian markets.

The moves today are the latest escalation of a trade war that also includes plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on all foreign-made vehicles this week.

Accordingly, Trump slammed a baseline tariff of 10 percent across all countries, while upping the duties for various partners whom he described as bad actors with country like Lesotho getting as much as 50 percent levies on their exports to America.

While unveiling the tariffs, Trump stated he could have gone higher by imposing higher tariffs to match what each country charges to US.

“The tariffs will be not a full reciprocal,” he said. “I could have done that, yes, but it would have been tough for a lot of countries who didn’t want to do that.”

Auto tariffs of 25 percent will go into effect tomorrow as planned.

Vanguard had reported that Nigeria’s total N4.59 trillion exports to the United States may be threatened as a result of the new tariffs.

But commenting on the tariff imposition, Mr. David Adonri, Vice Chairman, Highcap Securities, posited that American consumers would bear the brunt of the new tariff “if the goods Nigeria exports to the US have high price elasticity of demand”.

“President Trump is increasing the tariffs to discourage imports and reinvigorate domestic production.

The increase in tariffs may not adversely affect Nigeria’s export to the US because they are mainly tropical agricultural produce.

“US trade with Nigeria is not significant, hence increase in tariffs may not affect Nigeria’s exports,” he said.

“With increasing volume of importation of crude oil by Dangote Refinery, the trade balance may be in favor of the US now.

“If the goods Nigeria exports to the US have high price elasticity of demand, the Americans will bear the extra cost arising from the tariff hike,” Adonri added.

If Nigeria reciprocates , operating system will be out of reach, ChatGPT subscriptions will only be for the very rich, cost of drugs from US will be over the shelf.

The best for Nigeria now is just to restrategize like China did years ago

Nigeria should go ahead and reciprocate by banning imports from America. There is nothing they buy from us anyways. They used to buy oil from Nigeria, but that has stopped around the days of NADECO. There is nothing we import from the US that we can not import at a cheaper rate from asia. So let the trade war start. We are already down, so why fear further falls?

You have not asked yourself what Nigeria is charging them 27 percent tarriff , is Nigeria preparing for a major offensive too?

These tarriff clearly state reciprocal , if Nigeria wants it to go away then we reduce our tarriff to 14 percent

You don't know anything. This tariff will discouraged importation and boast local production. These countries need America market more than America need them. Most of these countries will go into recession. The US have been Father Christmas for far too long. Forget all these bias analysis you hear on CNN and other anti trump western TV stations.
On the bright side, it might be good for Nigeria because most of these countries will start looking for other markets (countries) to do business with, Nigeria with its large population and love for foreign goods will be a good market for them

Nigeria should place a travel ban on all American legislators and citizens alike.

We should place sanctions on them, and threaten them with an invasion.

Meanwhile Nigeria has almost 35% tariff on goods from USA.

It’s also why cars from USA are so expensive when they come to Nigeria.

If you’ve ever bought a car from USA you’ll know that Nigerian customs will nearly kill you before you can clear it.

Sometimes tariff as high as 50%. I’m starting to see that USA is that rich friend that everyone took advantage of lol

It's just half of what we charge them. It's good to see several countries still stick to the 10% baseline tariff.

US wants to re-industrialize, hence they are charging more tariff from those countries above the baseline.

It's not too bad at 14% reciprocal tariff on Nigeria being that the minimum U.S. reciprocal tariff across board is 10%. So, if like Bolivia and Uganda which charge 20% tariffs, Nigeria charges the same 20% down from 27%, it means U.S. reciprocal tariffs on Nigeria would also drop to 10%.

The African Growth & Opportunities Act (AGOA) would most definitely be scrapped as well. It's due for renewal in 2025, but Trump wouldn't hesitate to discontinue it for the "America first project." Those of us with ties to the business and investment ecosystem better brace up for the strong headwinds. You better innovate or die. Period.
