The motion is a good development. If for nothing, it goes on to cement the fact that Majority of Nigerians want the subsidy removal suspended!
Also, if GEJ feels Nigerians need to lead the fight against the huge bills by the Legislators and also presidency's recurrent expenditure(not the small executive salary please), He should know Nigerians are highly motivated by Occupy Nigeria and can also fight NASS to a standstil on their take home pay. Pls note that Nigerians will fight not only NASS huge bills, but also the Presidency's(cost of foreign trips, budget for renovations, feeding, entertainment etc)!

BTW even an 80% cut in basic Salary means absolute nothing.

Keep your basic salary and scrap all the criminal benefits/allowances this people recieve. How many Nigerians are on free housing? free healthcare? free education? free car loan. Scrap all those dodgy allowances and let public officials live on their salary like the rest of us.
Re: House Of Reps Passes Motion To Reverse Subsidy Removal - Sai, Tambuwal by 989900: 7:27pm On Jan 08, 2012
Exactly my point. Tap the current anger in the country, send a bill to cut NASS wages and tell the Nigerian people if that bill gets passed fuel subsidy removal will be reversed!

You can not sit there and do nothing and call youself President.

Yes o. Plus properly detail EFCC or any new body to help fight corruption and misappropriation vigorously at all levels.
In a "sincere air", not in some ambiguous "fresh air".

I still think that protests should go on. If our parents generation had protested back then when SAP was introduced, our generation will not be facing this mess right now. If we don't do anything about Nigeria and her mess, our children's generation will not forgive us. Think about it.

Have a read at the 2012 budget, you would weep for Nigeria! One would have thought Okonjo Iweala the Finance Minister would be the one to lead an onslaught on the huge and obscene allowances of the excutive and legislatives arms of government and present a budget to address same and put it at the mercy of the public!

That one dem go fight tooth and nail.
In the real sense, we do need to find a way to make governmental positions both political and non political a lot lot less attractive financially.

Well that will not happen when she is the greatest culprit. Are they no longer paying her in dollars?

I am of the view that no matter what that woman knows it is time for her to go. The begining of any cuts must come from cutting the cost of govt. and this will not happen while Iweala is still finance minister.

She needs to go back to World Bank. What we need to do to get the country working is no rocket science.

na waoh,  imagine how they all orchestrated NOOOO!!! when someone raised the question on whether to prosecute the cabal came up, seems like they already planned on that before the meeting sef. Now they want the FG to revert to N65 but don't want the cabal to be prosecuted,  conflicting interest I would say. They were even so dull to the extent that they forgot to cover loop holes that might suggest they have been bribed by the Cabals. They all mean no good for Nigeria, both the Executive and legislative.  They are all concerned about their own pockets.

Let's at least give the members some credit. Let's not deceive ourselves, most of us here will do worse if we were in their shoes, besides, Nigerians should also give credit to Dimeji Bankole for not allowing GEJ have his way in the house of Reps, imagine if the speaker were Mulikat, GEJ and his cohorts would have syphoned this country dry. Moreso, what the members just did, like someone rightly pointed out, is to send a signal to GEJ that if the subsidy is not included, they're not passing the budget! Let the drama begin

If you're here claiming that Jonathan did his deregulation for the sake of Nigerians, you're EVIL & EVIL will not leave your HOUSEHOLD. Ask yourself, why can't someone like Obasanjo, say something in this critical time of Nigeria Cos Obasanjo is FAILURE, LOOTED THE TREASURY & HISTORY WILL NEVER BE KIND TO HIM. " THE EVIL THAT MEN DO LIVES WITH THEM" Ask yourself WHAT MADE Nelson Mandela the GREATEST african alive?? I'm not worried about NOW, TOMORROW, SUBSIDY & all worth not, the FUTURE and HISTORY will take care of Jonathan & his policies and he will be a disgrace to the MINORITIES & South south folks, cos he has chosen to do the DEVILS BID. After the 2011 election, Jonathan went to Obudu for relaxation, guess who was by his right hand, FEMI OTEDOLA, then, I knew that JONATHAN is out to destroy Nigeria. Nigerian rulers are not going to be SINCERE & PRUDENT cos subsidy was removed.

They should not think this advise of the reversal is means anything.

They are part and parcel of the problem of this country. They know that if a thorough investigation is done on the supposed Cabal all of them would be indicted. why will they not shout NOOOOOOOOOO. Buncha rogues.

They also could not articulate themselves well, some where so confused, while supporting the removal in their arguements, they submitted that it should be not be removed. i was ashamed of some of these supposed honourables.

Lazy house, what have they been doing all this while? Were they not in Nigeria? This is a crafty attempt to claim righteousness. The 25% of national budget that goes to them should now be the focus of discussion. We need that money for the creation of jobs. My President thank you for cutting your own, this is time for sacrifice by everyone. Why should the shameless house postpone the dooms day. Greedy folks.
Re: House Of Reps Passes Motion To Reverse Subsidy Removal - Sai, Tambuwal by saintohia: 8:22pm On Jan 08, 2012
1. Did everybody observer that the major reason that forced the president (FEC) to remove fuel subsidy now is "NIGERIA IS BROKE"

2. The Lower House is highly corrupt too which is the greater part / root of Nigerian problem, THEY REFUSED TO CALL TO BOOK THE (GHOST) CABAL WE'RE MADE TO BELIEVE IS THE REASON THEY WANT TO REMOVE FUEL SUBSIDY, hence encouraging corruption.

I wonder why the reps did not cut their salaries?
Why did they also reject a motion to investigate, arrest and prosecute the cabal? Is it because they are members?

They actually DO NOT need to own anything. As long as they are alive, eat and, transport one way or the other, they'd feel the heat seriously. You really don't get the interpretation do you?

Does the President in a democracy answer to anybody in your view?

The Nigerian people dont want this subsidy removal,

The pronouncement of the House reflects that,

Only a dictator will not listen. If that is the route Jonathan wants to go then he should dissolve the NASS and announce a full blown dictatorship so that we know what we have on hand.

Strike must proceed.Total shut down of; Airports, seaports,PHCN, oil depots,Refineries, commercial centers, transport organisations, revenue generations centers, etc, NATION WIDE.
For first 3 days,Jona himself go hear WEHNNN!whether house passes a bill or convene to resort to common sense and advise immediate reversal of PMS pump price, strike must go on.Imagine, even when they had been refining crude oil at our refineries, they had been selling locally refined PMS,Diesel and kerosene at same price of the imported ones. NONSENSE!

Not true.
Allowances are usually percentages of the basic salary.
See: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-753481.0.html
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-469864.0.html

A reduction of X% of basic salary approximately translates to an X% reduction in gross salary.
The areas that may not be affected are the benefits and perquisites (especially estacodes).

I'm very surprised people think politicians make money from salary. When you guys are privilege to engage these thievies one on one, then you'd know how they make their billions even without touching their monthly salaries. The more you look, the less you see.

interesting>>>>>but in my curiousity if i may enquire, during the planned nlc protests who will suffer>>>i never supported gejs election but this is a progressive policy that we should tarry  embrace and overcome for the sake of our future generations, but ofcourse the typical nigerian mentality states why should we suffer for the future generations?
gej plans to introduce a paycut n all of a sudden the house of reps convne in our interest. and people here commend them. myopic bunch.

I agree with you on this point.

It is to the benefit of the masses when the legislature is not a rubber stamp of the executive. The REPS have done well. Now it is time for Jonathan to heed this call and also deal his own blow to the legislature by sending them a bill for drastic reduction in their salaries and allowances. With the present public outcry, this will be his best move at this time as the public will be totally in support and the REPS and Senate will have no choice if only to save face.

But the big question is whether Jonathan really up to it.
