The Federal Government in the early hours of Monday (today) deployed armed soldiers in all the major locations where protesters in Lagos had gathered last week to openly denounce the January 1, 2012 removal of fuel subsidy. The soldiers, who were armed with tanks and bayonets, set up 16 checkpoints around the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojta, Lagos in the early hours of the morning. There had been hints that government might be considering the imposition of a state of emergency in Lagos State, which has been the epicentre of opposition to the removal of fuel subsidy. The soldiers are believed to have been deployed as a means of stopping the protests and rallies that crippled all social and economic activities in Lagos last week. The soldiers, who mounted multiple checkpoints on Ikorodu Road, searched vehicles and passers-by before allowing them to proceed. Reports reaching THE PUNCH also indicate that Mile 12, Maryland, Pen Cinema in the Agege area of Lagos and Falomo have also been taken over by armed troops. http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-deploys-soldiers-in-lagos/ |
