KANO—The pomp of royalty was set aside, yesterday, as the revered Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero broke down in tears as he recounted the loss of human lives that followed last Friday’s Boko Haram attack on the ancient city before a visiting President Goodluck Jonathan.

Right in front of his subjects while receiving President Goodluck Jonathan, the octogenarian monarch could not hold back his tears, while reflecting on the level of carnage and the hundreds of innocent souls who had been killed from bomb blasts by the Boko Haram sect.

The president’s visit was to commiserate with the Emir over last Friday’s bomb blast in the ancient city that reportedly left about 162 dead and several others injured.

President Goodluck Jonathan signs Condolence Register at the Palace of the Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero (Right) during his visit to Kano State.

It took the monarch almost half an hour to read through a two-page prepared speech in Hausa as he broke down intermittently shedding tears and on each occasion, palace guards had to form a ring around him before wiping off his tears.

In his speech, Alhaji Bayero told the visiting President that the emirate deeply appreciated his visit and complained that Kano, a city of over 9 million people, is under-policed and appealed to the president to beef up security in the city.

Alhaji Ado Bayero told the visiting president that the emirate will support current effort by the federal Government to combat terrorism in all its ramifications, adding that Kano ‘deeply appreciate the courtesy of Mr. President.”

Bayero told the President the need to increase the number of police and other security agents in the state, noting that the current arrangement where 8,000 policemen serve the state of over nine million people calls for urgent review.

“It is a far cry that a city of kano’s size and status is being policed by 8,000 men, and we appeal to the authority concerned to have a rethink on the current situation in the overall peace and stability of the state”, Bayero stressed.

The monarch described the Friday attack as ‘unfortunate, ugly and violent” and tasked people to fear Allah in what ever they do, adding that Kano emirate will intensify prayers for Almighty to intervene in the security challenges.

To underscore the security situation of the period, tanks were deployed around the palace with armed soldiers.

Thousands of residents also lined the streets to welcome the President as crowd of onlookers waved in appreciation of the visit.

This was President Jonathan’s first official visit to the Northern part of the country since the increased activities of the Boko Haram insurgency.

We will not rest until terrorism is wiped out— GEJ

In his speech, the president assured that the Federal Government will not relent until terrorism is wiped out in the country.

Sporting Black caftan (long gown) and black shoes to match President Jonathan stated that those behind the ‘dastardly act are not spirit and they are people that live with us”, stressing that the hallmark of their activities call for increased security consciousness by Nigerians’.

President Jonathan who was accompanied on the visit by the National Security Adviser, General Patrick Azazi; Defense Minister, Dr Bello Halilu; National Chairman of PDP, Kawu Baraje among other top Federal Government functionaries explained that the security challenges call for concern of everyone, saying “we need to know as well that an attack on one is an attack on everyone of us”.

Said he: “Those who perpetrate this dastardly act are not spirit, they live freely with us in the society and the security challenges they pose have now made it incumbent on us to be extra vigilant on what our next door neighbor does and by so doing, we will overcome the evil forces,” he said.

The Commander-in-Chief declared before the Emir and his council of chiefs that in view of Kano’s importance in the region and sub Saharan Africa, the state would not be neglected” and promised increased security to the town and other hot spots in the federation.

The President noted that his visit to Kano was to build the confidence of the people of the state in the ability of the government to tame the Boko Haram insurgency, adding “they will never succeed”.

The President during his two hour visit, also visited the military hospital, Zone 1 Office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police before jetting out to Abuja and said that the Federal Government in concert with the state government will explore ways of assisting victims of the multiple bomb blast.

President Jonathan, while responding to earlier request by the Emir on the completion of three abandoned irrigation projects in the state, River Kano, Bagwai and Kunchi said that such projects have been captured in 2012 appropriation for action in line with his campaign promises.

EU offers to help track culprits

The European Union, yesterday, offered to assist Nigeria in dealing with the challenge of checkmating the Boko Haram sect, after last Friday’s bomb and gun attacks that left over hundreds of people dead and hundreds more injured.

While joining the international community to strongly condemn the attack on the Zonal Headquarters of the Police, three police stations as well as the Kano residence of the Inspector General of Police and Kano Command office of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the EU also disclosed of plans to meet with the Nigerian government in February to discuss possible assistance that would assist in dealing with the Boko Haram menace.

A statement posted on EU media website and obtained by Vanguard in Abuja said High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, Catherine Ashton spoke in reaction to the deadly attacks.

According to the statement, “We will discuss with the Nigerian government in the coming days, including at our forthcoming Ministerial dialogue in early February, possible ways and concrete actions in support of peace, security and development in the country, particularly for the poorest communities.

“The High Representative is profoundly shocked and saddened by the latest wave of terrorist attacks that appear to have killed more than 150 innocent citizens in Kano, Northern Nigeria, on 20 January. She sends her most sincere condolences to the victims, their families and their communities.

“The EU resolutely rejects terrorism as a means to any end.”

Overwhelmed by the death toll of last Friday’s multiple blasts in Kano, Emir Ado Bayero broke down in tears yesterday. Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the attacks, which killed 166 persons.

The emir gave out his emotions while making a welcome remark to President Goodluck Jonathan and members of his entourage, who paid him a condolence visit in his palace in Kano. The President said that the attack on any part of Nigeria is an attack on the entire country.

The Emir, who was immediately shielded from the camera by his security guards as he sobbed, later took control of himself, sat down on his chair , cleaned his glasses and continued with his speech.

According to Alhaji Bayero, the Emirate Council is firmly in support of any step that the Federal Government will take to arrest the suspects in order to bring peace and tranquility to Kano State in particular and to Nigeria in general.
He said: “On our part, our efforts in organizing prayers in all over the state will be continuing. In fact, we are intensifying our efforts right now and praying that the Almighty Allah in His mercies will eliminate this and any other future occurrence of the ugly incident.

He urged the President to consider the size of Kano, including the state’s economic activities and therefore increase the number of security agents, particularly policemen. He noted that 8000 policemen in the state is very much inadequate for the size. The President, who was accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Dr Bello Haliru Mohammed and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Owoye Azazi, said that they are in the state to console the emir and the good people of Kano over the Friday incident.

He noted that though the crisis of Boko H aram had been with in the country for quite some time, the country has never experienced any explosion in Kano State before last Friday’s incident.“I am here to assure that the Federal Government will not rest until the perpetrators of this act are brought to book,” he added. According to the President, the suspects are neither spirits nor ghost, saying they are persons who live in our midst. To this end, he charged Nigerians to look at the activities of their neighbours with a view to knowing what they do daily.

He urged the people to report any suspicious character or movements to the security authorities, adding that by so doing, they will help the government and the security bodies overcome the forces of those who are responsible for this act of violence. “All what we need is the cooperation of our people to help give relevant information to the security agencies” while urging the people to police themselves and report suspicious characters before they cause damage to all. “Any attack on any leader or any part of the country is an attack on all of us. Let all of us decide to collectively fight these terrorist. They cannot win Nigeria.”

To the dead victims, the President said that they didn’t die in vain while praying the Almighty Allah to give their families the courage to bear the loss. He said that the Federal Government will strengthen the security in Kano and other parts of Nigeria, even as he noted that the act of suicide bombing is relatively new in the land. He stated that the Federal Government will work with the Kano State Government to see the assistance it will give to the state while pledging the resolve of the government to flush out these acts of terrorism in the land.

Meanwhile, the President said that some arrests had been made, adding that the backers of Islamist sect were being pursued.“Some arrests have been made. Some died in the process. Some were suicide bombers,” Jonathan said in a BBC interview during the visit to Kano. “There must be people who are sponsoring them. Terrorists all over the world have their source of income. “We are also looking into those areas to make sure that the so-called Boko Haram…those who are encouraging them, those who are sponsoring them, shall be brought to book.”
Asked about their membership, he said: “nobody can say for now, because you know that they are not organized armed forces.”

In another development, tragedy was averted yesterday when two cars were diffused of bombs that were planted inside them at a strategic place in the state capital. The two cars were neatly parked very close to Chula Oil filling station, along the Eastern bypass, and at a NNPC Mega filling station at Hotoro area. They were abandoned until residents raised the alarm and called the attention of policemen, who diffused them. Following this, the security operatives decided to diffused the bomb planted inside the cars

The Police spokesman, ASP Magaji Majiya, could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile, a social media, The Will, pasted a copy of the Islamic sect’s warning, which was contained in leaflets Boko Haram circulated in Kano metropolis yesterday. In it, the group warned that it would attack security personnel, their agents and Christians.
The terror group also warned that it is not Boko Haram, but should be called Jamatul Ahlil Sunnah lit daawati wal Jihad.

The message reads: “We are the people being called the illegal name -Boko Haram- but our name is Jamatul Ahlil Sunnah lit daawati wal Jihad.“The message to the people of Kano is to remember that police in Kano have at most times arrested our members but referred to them as gunmen or armed robbers.“So, mind you that we will attack anyone who is arresting our members.“We are, however, only fighting security personnel and their agents including Christians.”

This assumption of yours that everything that happens up north must be with the support of most or even prominent northerners will lead you nowhere. It makes the problem worse than it is.

Was GEJ a supporter of the ND militants?
Were SE Ezes supporters of the kdnappers that ran rampant in your neighbourhood several months ago?

On the latter, it is actually not unheard of that you would answer yes. Afterall SE governors at the time came up with the same reasoning you have gave here by saying they were going to hold the village chiefs responsible for kidnappings in their domain. So who is to be held responsible for the American that was kidnapped yesterday?

Let's stop fooling ourselves and stop following the smell of money in whatever we do and say. The smell of money is the root of all evil.

I once wrote here, I think a few days ago, that the story will change if prominent northerners become targets. Now the Emir has promised to help track down BH seeing that the chiecken is roosting nearer home. What were they doing before now?

Alhaji Ado Bayero is one prominent Nigerian I respect a lot, and I strongly disagree with your line of thoughts here. If there is one Nigerian who isnt a suspect he is.

Thank God for the averted blasts. That is the kinda news I love to hear

There is a link i saw on vanguard mobile about how the BH were begged by prominent people in kano two times in the last 5 months not to go ahead with attacking Kano. I cant dig it out now cos i am on mobile. That story shld help us understand a topic like this. I can authoritatively say They most times get some prominent locals to endorse those attacks, i am saying this because i am a testimony of one of such attack in 2008, Bauchi state. They tried to get local permission but the muslims in that community denied them.
As for me the Bayero is a top suspect becos he could av been one of those they informed and who pleaded with them. Even though all claims were made by the BH in the vanguard story, i strongly believe them.

I DONT BELIEVE THESE TEARS, THOSE GUYS THAT DID THIS BOMBING MUST HAVE LEFT THE MOSQUE AND PRAYED BEFORE THEY LEFT. IF THE IMAMS CRY FOR REAL IN THE MOSQUE TRUST ME, I KNOW THE MUSLIMS BEHAVE, IN 1 DAY THEY WILL CHASE BOKOHARAM OUT OF THE NORTH. THE NORTH WILL NOT BE CONDUCIVE FOR BOKO HARAM ANYMORE .  ITS JUST THAT THEY BELIEVE THAT WHAT BOKO HARAM IS DOING IS ACCORDING TO THE TEACHINGS OF MOHAMED IF NOT. YOU KNOW HOW VIOLENT MUSLIMS CAN BE IN DEFENDING ANYTHING THAT IS AGAINST THEIR RELIGION.

WHEN THEY POSTED A LIL CARTOON OF MOHAMED , YOU SAW WHAT HAPPENED AROUND THE WORLD, IF THIS BOKO HARAM GUYS DID NOT HAVE A BACKING FROM THE ISLAMIIC DOCTRINES, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A VIOLENT REACTION IN THE NORTH AND EVERY BOKO HARAM SUSPECT WOULD HAVE BEEN BEHEADED .
