Gbajabiamila: I Was Offered ₦100M To Support Obasanjo’s Third Term Agenda

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has revealed that he was offered the sum of N100 million during the 5th national assembly in order to support a Third Term agenda for the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

He stated this in his book ‘MR SPEAKER: The legislative life, service, and resilience of Femi Gbajabiamila’

written by Charles Omole and Musa Krishi and forwarded by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General.

In a copy sighted by DAILY INDEPENDENT, Gbajabiamila said while other lawmakers were offered N50m to support an amendment to the constitution that will accommodate the Third term agenda, he was offered N100m which he rejected.

Asked about his best moments as a lawmaker, Gbajabiamila was unequivocal in his choice. He was unapologetic about the role he played in killing the Third Term Agenda. “My best moment as a lawmaker? The death of Third Term”, he said repeatedly to drive home his point.

He continued “The day it was pronounced dead, because like I told you, we had sleepless nights. We were meeting; we got a place in Asokoro, hidden somewhere. We’d start our meetings sometimes at 11 at night and leave there at 4 am in the morning. Can’t remember how many of us. It was a risk to life. It was a risk to life”.

“So, the day it was pronounced dead, was a happy day; it was a relief to me. I was a free man. Look, I was offered inducement, at that time, by one of the major proponents of Third Term, I think at this point, I wouldn’t mention his name, but a major player in this country.
“Whilst they were offering members N50 million, I was offered double. An N100m at that time, and you know what N100m was, which, of course, I turned down. I say that just for you to understand the pressure: financial, mental, and physical pressure. We had no other job in the House except Third Term, the constitutional amendment”.

“So, for me, unfortunately as noble as that work was, the best time was the day it died, not the Third Term itself, but the day it was killed on the floor” Gbajabiamila recollected with some relief.

President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed why he did he went ahead with his trip to Senegal after the Kuje jailbreak.

Buhari averred that cancelling the trip could serve as morale booster to the.

The President is scheduled to participate in the International Development Association (IDA) for Africa Summit in Dakar, Senegal.

The IDA, a financial institution, which offers concessional loans and grants to developing countries, is a member of the World Bank Group.

In a statement by spokesman Garba Shehu, Buhari said he would be inadvertently passing a wrong message to the terrorists if he cancels the trip.

He noted that failure to attend the meeting would mean that the terrorists are successful.

The Nigerian leader made the comment after his visit to the Kuje prison where he assessed the extent of damage.

The government informed the public that it was aware of the mounting criticism of the trip to Dakar.

“Governments don’t stop working because nations face terrorist threats”, the presidency argued.

“To cancel the trip to Senegal would mean that the terrorists are successful in calling the shots, something that no responsible government in the world will allow.”

In Kuje, the President was also informed that security forces have recaptured 350 of the escapees while about 450 others are still unaccounted for.

“I am disappointed with the intelligence system. How can terrorists organize, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it?”, Buhari quipped.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has revealed how Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party shunned popular views on his choice of running mate.

It was gathered that some chieftains of the party had rooted for Nyesom Wike as Atiku’s deputy but he instead settled for Ifeanyi Okowa, the current governor of Delta State.

The development has torn the party apart with many governors aligning themselves with the APC candidates, Bola Tinubu.

Reacting, Ortom said Atiku’s choice of Okowa was a personal decision.

He told Channels TV, “I supported Wike to be Atiku’s running mate. But unfortunately it was zoned to someone else.”

The Emir of Zazzau in Kaduna State, Alhaji (Dr.) Shehu Idris, has died at the age of 84.

Bashir Ahmad, Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, who confirmed his death, said the monarch died this morning, September 20, 2020.

Mr. Idris reportedly died at an Army 44 Reference Hospital in Kaduna after a short admission.

The monarch spent 45 years on the throne having ascended to the throne at the age of 36 in 1975. He is survived by wives and children.

“On the Sept. 19, at about 2:00p.m., police operatives attached to the Command Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) arrested the syndicate at Awkuzu.

“The Suspects had on the Sept. 13, lured a 24 years old lady residing at St. Michael hostel, Temporary site, Awka under the pretext of securing for her a beauty make up job.

“They picked her up at Ukpo junction along Enugu- Onitsha expressway and took her to an isolated building at Awkuzu where they allegedly raped the victim repeatedly while in captivity for two days,” he said.

He said the suspects have voluntarily confessed to the crime and the victim was taken to the hospital for medical examination.

According to him, investigation on the case was still ongoing after which suspects would be brought to book.

“Consequently, the command enjoins the public to be wary of this new trend of crime and report suspicious persons through the police emergency number 07039194332 or the nearest police station for prompt response please,”

Fourteen bodies recovered so far as bus conveying church members to a funeral plunges into a river in Ivo local government area in Ebonyi state on Friday night, September 18.

Tragedy struck in Ivo local government area in Ebonyi state on Friday night, September 18, after a bus conveying 32 persons to a burial, plunged into Akaeze-Ukwu River in the local government area.

Spokesperson of the state police command, Loveth Odah, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said 14 bodies have so far been recovered while efforts are being made to recover the rest. She said the 14 corpses that have been recovered comprise of seven male and seven female.

Odah said among the five victims rescued was the driver of the said 608 coaster bus with Reg no. UKP 78 XA Mr Nwaonu Chinedu a native of IKWO LGA of the State. She said one of the deceased people was a female whose body was recovered shortly after the victim who died yesterday is a female who is yet to be identified.

“The female victim was confirmed dead by a medical Doctor on arrival at Dennis Hospital Akaeke in the Area.

The driver narrated that he conveyed 32 members of the Christ Peculiar Church of Nigeria Enugu State branch to attend a burial ceremony at Nguzu Edda in Afikpo South LGA of the State.

14 corpses have been recovered (7 female and 7 male) together with the 608 Vehicle.

The corpses have been deposited at Martha Memorial hospital mortuary AFIKPO preservation.”Odah said

Reactions have continued to trail the action of the former Lagos State governor and All Progressives Congress national leader, Bola Tinubu, over his refusal to stand up to greet the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at the coronation of the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal.

The spokesman for pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, in an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday while reacting to a viral video showing Tinubu sitting down while the Ooni stands to greet him, has berated Tinubu's actions.

He said although monarchs no longer hold political power, it was important for traditional institutions to be respected especially by the Yoruba people.

The activist recalled that in 2016, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is many years older than the monarch, bowed down to greet him.

Odumakin stated, “We are still Yoruba people. With due respect to our royal fathers, we should not say because we are in a modern age, we should not give the proper respect that we give to our oba.

Big Brother Naija lockdown housemate, Erica, has blasted Lucy over her performance during the Wednesday Pepsi Challenge.

Lucy and Erica’s lover, Kiddwaya were in the same Team Cuppy and delivered the song ‘Green Light’ for the challenge.

While Kiddwaya did everything to ensure victory for the group, Lucy happened to have forgotten her lines of the song they practiced.

The embattled former acting chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has again written to the Ayo Salami investigative panel, debunking media reports linking him to corruption allegations and published while he was being detained.

Mr Magu, through his lawyer, Wahab Shittu, accused the panel of not giving him fair hearing, adequate time and facilities to defend himself.

In a letter directed to the investigative committee yesterday, Mr Magu also insisted that the panel is yet to serve him the petitions containing the allegations against him, as well as a copy of the report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets (PCARA).

The PCARA was inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and it submitted its report in 2018. Its content, as it relates to Mr Magu, were only recently leaked to the media.

Mr Magu is currently being interrogated by a panel headed by the former president of the appeal court, over allegations of corruption and insubordination levelled against him by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

He was arrested last week and released on Wednesday after spending ten days in detention.

These falsehood publications being orchestrated in the media include the following:

NFIU SUBMITS REPORT ON MAGU’S FOREX TRANSACTIONS TO PANEL (SEE THE PUNCH OF TUESDAY, JULY 14, 2020) This report was published in The PUNCH on Tuesday July 14, 2020.

Our client states categorically that he has not been confronted on alleged illegal transactions and no such report was tendered by NFIU in any proceedings before this panel involving him till date.

Our client states categorically that the maximum forex transactions he has been involved in is the sum of $10,000 (Ten Thousand Dollars) till date.

Our client also wishes to place on record that he has no link with Kaduna-based Bureau De Change Operator as erroneously reported in the publication.

ALLEGED N573 MILLION NAIRA DUBAI PROPERTY LINKED TO MAGU

This allegation is outright falsehood and is denied by our client in unmistakable terms. It is instructive to state that the General Overseer of Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministries, Prophet Emmanuel Omale, in a pre-litigation letter addressed to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday 13th July, 2020, denied the allegations that he bought a property in Dubai worth N573 million on behalf of our client. Our client challenges his accusers to provide details of such property and proof of ownership by our client. Instructively, The PUNCH at Page 8 of Tuesday July 14th, 2020 had published the denial of Prophet Emmanuel Omale to set the record straight.

ALLEGED DIVERSION OF INTEREST ON RECOVERED FUNDS (SUNDAY PUNCH EDITION OF 12TH JULY, 2020)

This Publication on Front Page of Sunday Punch Edition of 12th of July, 20320 is outright falsehood.

Our client states that all recovered funds are lodged with TSA Account with Central Bank of Nigeria. It is elementary that funds in TSA Account lodged with CBN do not generate interest. It is therefore falsehood to publish that our client placed N500 billion (Five Hundred and Fifty Billion) recovered loot into deposit account.

The alleged transaction never featured in the proceedings before this Honourable Panel. Our client was never confronted with any such allegation in the proceedings before this panel and the news is blatant falsehood.

DAY 6: PANEL QUIZZES MAGU ON N700 MILLION TRAINING FUND (VANGUARD, TUESDAY 14TH JULY, 2020)

The allegation that this Panel requested our client to account for the sum of N700 million meant for the commission’s operatives is not true. Our client has not been confronted with such allegation by this Honourable Panel. Our client does not disburse any such funds in the EFCC.

The immediate Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) summoned by the Panel must have furnished details on this as the custodian of the funds. Our client denies this allegation completely. Funds earmarked for training was properly utilised by the Commission. The DFA and the Director of Audit will explain the utilisation of the funds meant for training with supporting documentations.

ALLEGED BID TO SPIRIT MAGU AWAY BUSTED (VANGUARD, JULY 14TH 2020 PG. 5)

The allegation that there were plans by some associates of our client to spirit him out of detention as published above is complete fabrication. Since our client has been in detention Nine (9) days ago, he has cooperated maximally with Law Enforcement Agents. Our client is only allowed very few restricted and fully screened visitors.

No such incident took place as reported and this is an attempt to bring our client on collision course with the authorities he respects enormously. Our client, as a commissioner of police, will never escape from custody as he remains innocent and a patriotic citizen.

SALAMI PANEL GRILLS MAGU, EFCC DIRECTORS AGAIN (DAILY TRUST, TUESDAY 14TH JULY, 2020 PG. 3)

The allegation that our client was grilled by the Panel on Monday, 13th July, 2020 as reported above is complete falsehood. The correct position was that our client and his Counsel (Mr. Wahab Shittu) arrived the venue of the ongoing Investigations on Monday 13th July, 2020 by 9am. Our client and his Counsel were kept at the waiting room of the venue of the sittings unattended to from 9am to 9pm when our client was taken back to custody.

This followed the same pattern on Thursday and Friday last week when our client waited for 12 hours without being called upon by the Panel to partake in the proceedings. Witnesses called by the Panel were interrogated by the Panel without the participation of our client or his Counsel in the proceedings. This was also the pattern on Tuesday, 14th July, 2020. Our client chose to wait patiently on the panel.

ALLEGED PAYMENT OF N4 BILLION TO PROF. YEMI OSINBAJO SAN, GCON, VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

Our client strongly denies this falsehood against the respected Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Our client has never given the sum of N4billion or any sum at all to Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN, GCON, Vice President of Federal Republic of Nigeria as wrongly reported. This allegation is complete falsehood designed to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of the Vice President and our client.

ALLEGED PAYMENT OF N28 MILLION TO FEMI FALANA SAN

This allegation is complete fabrication. Our client never gave N28 million or any amount to Mr Femi Falana SAN as maliciously reported. Our client also denies any link with a Kaduna-based Bureau De Change Operator as alleged.

SEARCH OF OUR CLIENT’S HOUSE – NO INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE FOUND

Our client confirms that his House was searched last Monday in his absence while in custody, but no incriminating evidence was found. It is untrue as reported that some dollars and expensive jewelries and wrist watches were found. Our client states that the search into his house did not reveal any incriminating evidence or materials. The cars removed from his residence were official vehicles assigned to our client as acting Chairman of EFCC.

DENIAL OF COPIES OF ALLEGATIONS AGAINST OUR CLIENT

Our client is spending the 9th day in custody without being given copy of the allegations against him to enable him formally respond to same. Our client is ready to formally respond to allegations and furnish documentary evidence in support if served with the copy of the allegations.

Our client respectfully demands the following:

a) A copy of the report of the Presidential Audit Committee

b) A copy of the memo of HAGF to the President on our client

c) Individual Petitions submitted to the Panel against our client.

Our client observes that rather being afforded copies of the allegations against him, some of these allegations are flying round on Social Media platforms with prejudicial consequences. Our client requests that these allegations be formally served on him to enable him respond to same immediately.

Our client observes that the Panel has issued official statement to the effect that it did not authorise the detention of our client. We request the Panel to recommend to the Inspector General of Police in whose custody our client is to release him from custody to enable him adequately prepare his defence and attend to his failing health. We plead with the authorities to release our client from custody.

QUESTIONS OVER ALLEGED N5BILLION ELECTION FUND (VANGUARD, MONDAY, JULY 13, 2020)

Our client denies receiving from INEC or anybody the sum of N5billion Election Fund as maliciously reported above. Our client has never been confronted with the alleged N5billion Election Fund by this Panel

This outrageous sum quoted above is outright falsehood. Funds released by INEC to EFCC were disbursed directly to the beneficiaries who participated in the electoral process.

This information can be verified from the INEC Chair, the Director of Finance and Administration EFCC and Director of Audit respectively. Our client has absolutely nothing to do with the sum disbursed as Electoral Fund and never benefitted from the disbursement. The story is complete fabrication designed to tarnish the image of our client.

ALLEGED FAILURE TO SUBMIT EFCC AUDITED ACCOUNTS FOR FOUR (4) YEARS (THISDAY, MONDAY, JULY 13, 2020).

This publication above is complete fabrication. The truth is that EFCC under our client’s watch is not in arrears on the submission of Audited Accounts. EFCC has complied in the submission of Audited Accounts for four years running. The Audited Account for 2020 will be due statutorily for submission in September, 2020 by virtue of Section 37 of the EFCC Act, 2004.

DSS, POLICE GO AFTER NFIU OFFICE BURGLARS (DAILY SUN, MONDAY, JULY 13, 2020).

Our client denies any link in the alleged burgling of the office of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), located at No 12, Ibrahim Taiwo Street, Aso Villa. Our client has no link with the Kaduna-based Bureau De Change (BDC) as reported. Our client states that an attempt to link him with the burglary or the Bureau De Change is a cheap blackmail. Our Client calls for investigation to unravel the truth.

SUSPENDED EFCC BOSS ALLEGEDLY QUERIED OVER 322 RECOVERED PROPERTIES DAILY SUN JULY 13TH, 2020

It is untrue that this Honourable Panel queried our client over 322 recovered properties. In the interrogation of our client so far this has never featured even if the head of Assets Forfeiture of the EFCC has appeared before the Penal. Our client has also not been given a copy of the report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets (PCARA). This publication is complete fabrication. The truth is that EFCC under our client’s watch is ready to respond to this allegation if obliged a copy of PCARA.

There has been no mismanagement of and certainly, there is no lack of transparency in the management of recovered assets under the leadership of our client. Our client’s detailed explanations are as follows:

SEIZED PROPERTIES ALLEGEDLY CORNERED BY TOP EFCC OFFICIALS, MAGU’S FRIENDS – PANEL (THE PUNCH, JULY 13TH, 2020)

The above publication is outright falsehood. Our client requests answers to the following:

a) Who are the EFCC officials who cornered the properties?

b) What specific properties were cornered? And by who?

c) Who were these Magu’s friends who cornered these properties?

Our client insists that these imputations attributed to the Panel are outright falsehood. Our client states that these allegations never featured in the proceedings of the panel.

GENERAL COMMENTS

The charges against our client are trumped-up allegations designed to tarnish his image and rubbish the credibility and image of EFCC which has been Stellar and outstanding under our client’s watch.

Based on the above circumstances, our client was not given adequate time and facilities for his defence and his demand for a copy of the allegations against him has not been honoured till date.

We appeal to the Honourable Panel to consider the above and uphold the Fundamental Rights to fair hearing of our client.

An ulcer is an open sore. Peptic ulcers develop in the lining of the stomach or upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). An ulcer in the stomach is called a gastric ulcer, and an ulcer in the duodenum is called a duodenal ulcer.

An untreated H. pylori infection may also progress into peptic ulcer disease or stomach cancer later in life. Another common cause of gastritis is long-term use of aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory drugs.

In the past, children with peptic ulcers lived with the chronic condition for several years or even a lifetime. Today, we have a better understanding of what causes peptic ulcers and how to treat them, meaning most children can be cured.
Symptoms of peptic ulcers, gastritis and H. pylori infection can be very mild in some children.

Abdominal discomfort is the most common symptom of peptic ulcers and usually feels like a dull, gnawing ache. The pain often occurs two or three hours after a meal or in the middle of the night when the stomach is empty. The pain may come and go for several days or weeks. President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to open an investigation into suspended EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu as far back as 2018 without his knowledge, fresh details say.

The DSS, which has a financial crimes unit, played the central role in unearthing the allegations for which the suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is now facing a presidential probe.

The President was said to have been shocked when the DSS provided a comprehensive dossier on Magu which was “damning”.

“If Magu was a man who can read the signs, he should have asked himself why the president did not re-present his name to the senate for confirmation as EFCC chairman since the new national assembly was inaugurated,” a senior presidential source was quoted as saying by TheCable.

The current Senate has never turned down any nominee of the President, unlike the previous one which refused to confirm Magu.

However, it would appear Magu eventually got wind of the moves against him as he tried to ingratiate himself with the President.

“He came to the mosque at the presidential villa to say Jumaat prayers along with the president on June 5, but the president was not very comfortable with it,” the source said.

“President Buhari prefers to pray with his family and personal aides, so he was not happy when Magu wangled his way to the mosque after the partial lifting of lockdown.

“An instruction was then issued that he should not be allowed to come to the mosque.”

The trigger for the DSS investigation, according to the source, was the report of the presidential committee on audit of recovered assets.

The three-member committee was inaugurated on November 22, 2017 by Buhari to audit all assets recovered by agencies of the federal government from May 29, 2015 when his government was inaugurated.

The committee was headed by Olufemi Lijadu, with Mohammad Nami and Gloria Bibigha as members.

Lijadu is now the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) while Nami was appointed chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The committee submitted its report six months behind schedule because of the extent of the work, and the aspect on EFCC “took the president by surprise”.

The report said the EFCC reported a total naira equivalent of N46,038,882,509.87, while the naira equivalent of the foreign currency lodgements were N37,533,764,195.66, “representing a shortfall of N8,505,118,314.21″.

“These inconsistencies cast a serious doubt on the accuracy of figures submitted by the EFCC. It is the committee’s view that the EFCC cannot be said to have fully accounted for cash recoveries made by it,” the report noted.

“While EFCC reported total Naira recoveries of N504,154,184,744.04, the actual bank lodgements were N543,511,792,863.47. These discrepancies mean that EFCC’s actual lodgement exceeded its reported recoveries by N39,357,608,119.43.”

Buhari immediately asked the DSS to investigate Magu.

While DSS identified several properties allegedly owned by Magu in Dubai, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) played a major role in providing intelligence on his alleged financial dealings.

NFIU, the central national agency that handles disclosures and intelligence in the financial sector, used to be under the EFCC but was excised and made an independent body in July 2018 despite Magu’s opposition.
