Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has inaugurated a nine-man committee, chaired by the legal luminary, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), to examine the possibility of establishing an airport in the state. He said his administration is committed to the transport sector as a key area in the state’s development. The governor said his administration has invested heavily in road construction and rehabilitation in the 16 local government areas to drive home its commitment to the development of the transport sector. Dr. Fayemi said the proposed airport would bring Ekiti State into the limelight with its emerging economy and attract investors as well as tourists, who have flair for comfort. He noted that though the establishment of an airport would require a lot of money, the state government, through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, would accomplish the task. The governor said the airport has become necessary as the Federal Government is establishing an Export Conditioning Centre and a silo in the state while the Ikogosi Resort would also attract many visitors and tourists. A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Olayinka Oyebode, listed the terms of reference of the committee as: examining the viability and feasibility of an airport in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, and proposing a practical implementation roadmap for same. Fayemi was optimistic that when the Ikogosi Resort becomes functional, the proposed airport would market it. A South African hotel management group has agreed to manage the resort for the government. Babalola described the inauguration as “historic in the history of Ekiti State”. He noted that the project is dear to members of the committee. The eminent lawyer tied the lack of industries in the state and the failure of the take-off of the Ikogosi Resort to the absence of an airport. “There is an urgent need for meaningful industrial development in Ekiti by involving foreign developers from China, Europe, Japan, the Middle East and America. Any foreigner who comes to Ekiti with the intention of establishing an industry and who comes through Lagos by road to Ado-Ekiti or from Abuja by road, otherwise called the death traps, would never come back to Ekiti,” he said. Other members of the committee are: Sir Remi Omotoso, Afolabi Esan, Segun Ologunleko, Femi Tolani, Kayode Jegede, Babajide Arowosafe, Jide Adeniji and Capt. Bolaji Agbelusi. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news/45143-afe-babalola-heads-panel-on-ekiti-airport.html |

I would prefer all the southwest states and Kwara pull their resources together, bring in private sector partners and establish a fast and efficient rail system to run accros the region, and all the way to Kwara state. 2 Likes |

This should not be a priority, if it can be accomplished by private money sha, then it is okay. |

This is akin to building an airport in Ebonyi or in Taraba, among other backwards Nigerian States. How many people - and at what frequency- will fly there? The Governor is indeed foolish as suggested by a prior poster. Who elected him as Governor? The idea of a regional rail transport system proposed by Aigbofa makes far more sense. 1 Like |

How will the PPP work when there is no meaningful investment or economic activity in ekiti. No investor will put down his kobo in a poor state such as Ekiti. The funds will never be recoup-able. |

Rail system plans are under way,but that will take all the governors to commit themselves. It was the same Kayode Fayemi who spearheaded the meeting of western governors to work out the modalities of a rail system from lagos to delta. The airport may seem premature now, but the governor really wants to use tourism as a revenue source for the government. if the feasibility studies come good, then nothing will stop them if the funding is available. |

Vietnam shows interest to invest in Ekiti Thu, 13 Sep 2007 00:00 http://thenationonlineng.net/web2/articles/32952/1/Chinese-firms-to-invest-in-Ekiti/Page1.html Mr. Van Pham Cong, Trade Counsellor of Vietnam Trade Office in Nigeria, visited the Governor of the Ekiti State, Engr. Segun Oni, yesterday. The two discussed the possibility of investment collaboration between Ekiti State and Vietnam. The country is especially interested in investing in Nigeria's agriculture sector. Oni said that his administration is passionate about attracting local and foreign investors. He wants to decrease unemployment and increase the state's internally generated revenue in order to reduce its dependence on the federation account. The Governor added that he wants to make Ekiti State investor friendly and remove all possible investment barriers. The process of securing a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), which used to be cumbersome, has already been shortened to about 10 working days. State government is also improving power supply and building roads to make all towns and villages accessible. Chinese firms to invest in Ekiti A group of investors from China’s Shan Dong Province has said that the Shan Dong Province would establish granite quarries and sugar cane plantations in Ekiti State as soon as necessary formalities are completed. Speaking at a meeting with Governor Segun Oni over the weekend, leader of the Chinese team, Mr. Zhang Zhi Lin, who said his team was in the state to assess business opportunities, explained that his organisation had already established a mega-quarry worth N2 billion in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. Lin, who said the team was impressed by what it saw, stressed its readiness to join hands with the government in its quest to turn the state economy around. http://www.tradeinvestnigeria.com/news/982093.htm Back to the topic: Ekiti its an emerging economy that deserves the airport more than any other state. 1 Like |

Kwara is my favorite state in Yorubaland. Massive land, splendid soil pH, decent city with lots of potential for expansion, etc. If the leaders there like Saraki and his thugs weren't such dullards, they would've actually taken that much publicized "Agricultural revolution" seriously. Lots of opportunities would've been created! Unfortunately, it was all for media attention... As for this Ekiti rabbit governor or whatever he calls himself? From the multi-billion naira Lagos office to this white dinosaur project, he's really showing himself for what he truly is. So much for ACN Progressivism. |
