UNILAG To MAU: Name Clash Might Force Govt To Rename Again! by abubaka101: 6:53pm On May 29, 2012
Today the news broke out, that our President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, has renamed the well known University Of Lagos (famously called UNILAG), to Moshood Abiola University. The reason, was for the celebration of Democracy Day and to immortalise the "Political Victim" of the June 12 election, that proved invalid, M.K.O. Abiola, who later died in prison.
The announcement has created pandemonium in the institution; students are rioting, civil rights groups have condemned the president, saying "he is misusing his power". But in the heat of this situation, a case can be made!
Before now, a polytechnic in Ogun state has and is still being called Moshood Abiola Polytechnic. And today, a university is now going to share that same name! This shows, that the president was not properly advised on the renaming of the school!
The two institutions could be confused by ignorant students, simply because both names are nearly the same.
So as not to create problems in the educational sector, the president should revert the school to its former name.
Aside the name clash between both schools, the name UNILAG, is (or was) very inspiring to the students. Its a sad thing to know that this might affect the schools popularity.
I pray the president listens to the students/Nigerians, and revert the name of the school to its original (which it has been using for over 40years).
