UNILAG Shut Down Over MAU Name Change Protests by Slyr0x: 12:06pm On May 30, 2012
The authorities of the university of Lagos today announced a two closure of the institution in apparent attempt to chill the growing protests by students of the institution concerning the decision to rename the 50 year old institution.

The institution announced the decision over its local radio statio, UNILAG FM. The announcement asked all students to leave the institution premises by 11: 00 AM. Students of the institution began a series of protest since yesterday morning fate President Goodluck Jonathan announced plans to rename the institution after Nigeria's democracy hero MKO Abiola.

Much anticipated smiley. Things are about to go down; things have taken a new dimension, things will never be the same. In trying to score cheap political points.................................I heard major roads have been blocked across Lagos.

my question is that ''did the president follow any procedure before his decision? Or there are no procedures for such move?

kholis: A step in the right direction. GEJ should see that his latest policy is not working

Not his latest policy.
Goodluck has not got any working policy for the masses. Though he got a lot working for his family and friends in PDP fraternity.
A cheap political move for a cheap score.
This is nonsense.

Much as i dont support gej's policies,i dont understand what all the noise is all about if not for the simple reason that MAUL is not as posh and classy sounding like UNILAG.
I like the ring to the name though;MAUL

hmm.... why do i see this as a conspiracy theory, with the students being the ever available, nothing to benefit comodity amongst two mighty powers tearing at each other.

Those kids are really foolish to have shut down roads because of a name change.

It goes further to prove how senseless many nigerian youths are,I'm sure they are prolly happy school won't be on for a while, more time dedicated to their armed robbery and runs business.

Abiola was a thief. (ITT-International Thief Thief- Fela) He was after personal aggrandizements. June 12 annulment was a power play fall out amongst two rivals IBB and MKO who masqueraded as friends. Nigeria has civil rule not democracy. This is ARMY ARRAGEMENT (Fela).

Tell those students to protest against the heavy presence of corruption in this administration, tell them to protest against rise in unemployment rate.otherwise, they will graduate either as MAUL or MALU graduates without getting a job.

I think by the time the students spend 6 months at home ...they will understand the implication of there action....i still don't understand what has changing of federal university name...now concerns students..?a gov institution.infact that school should be close down indefinately.

Ask yourself why the protest..name changing to democratic hero....i really thought these guys love MKO....If they requested June 12 should be made a public holiday....then why all these cries about UNILAG TO MAU

I just try to imagine what will happen after the two weeks. Will the students accept the change of name or the FG reverses its decision (which seems impossible), only time will tell.

Cant our so called Presido ever do the right thing @ the right time? Is renaming UNILAG to MAU or MALU the priority in the country, where the citizen can no longer sleep with two eyes closed, where every fibre of our affairs has been rotten by corruption, where our image as a nation does not sound well as a nation, so the next on the agenda is renaming schools, i tire ohh

ALL OF YOU WHO ARE RAINING INSULTS ON THE STUDENTS OF UNILAG..... YES TO ME ITS STILL UNILAG AT LEAST THEY CAN SPEAK WHEN POKED AND SPEAK OUT INDEED. WE ALL NEED TO LEARN HOW TO GIVE OURSELVES A VOICE AND SPEAK OUT WHEN WRONGED. WE JUST DON'T HAVE TO ALWAYS TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT AND KEEP SAYING ''DON'T WORRY EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT". SOMETIMES WE NEED TO MAKE THINGS ALRIGHT. JONATHAN OR WHATEVER HE IS CALLED NEVER FOLLOWED DUE PROCESS BEFORE THE NAME CHANGE AND AS USUAL THIS IS JUST ONE OF THEIR WAYS OF SAYING TO YOU AND I THE ORDINARY NIGERIANS THAT WE DO NOT HAVE A VOICE AND WHATEVER THEY SAY MUST STAND EVEN WHEN THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY WRONG. NIGERIANS WAKE UP. THE ISSUE NOW IS NOT JUST ABOUT GEJ AND UNILAG ITS ABOUT THE WAY OF GOVERNMENT IN GENERAL. WE ARE THE PEOPLE AND WE DESERVE A SAY IN HOW OUR AFFAIRS ARE HANDLED. PERIOD!

Abeg help me tell them. Nigeria is a place that you hardly see peaceful protest. Some will just join the bandwagon and in the process, get injured or killed in the process. They will end up dying for nothing because the name has come to stay.

University of Ife was changed to OAU long ago and till today, the school still remain great and one of the best.
