All of you that are lambasting the students should STFU already. Have you paused to ask whether GEJ followed due process before effecting the change. This move is irrational and undemocratic. He is not a Military head of State and so cannot wield his Presidential powers irrationally disregarding the provisions of the Law.
People should learn to keep abreast with realities before taking sides and this lay back attitude got to stop if this Nation must move forward.

^^^ So who did the FG consult before naming it UNILAG in the first place? Is that the book your parents sent you there to go and study? Oh, I forgot. They are yahoo boys and prostitute girls. They bribe lecturers to pass and graduate. Pathetic!
Nigeria youths have become so dumb, I weep for the upcoming generation. Where have you ever heard the owner of a University has to consult the students before they change the name. It is so ridiculous how this lot think. They have a warped sense of self importance and revel in vanity and emptiness. They are worse than the older generation that they castigate. They will rather have a nice sounding name than identify with the ideologies of democracy, justice and freedom! Sums it up for Nigeria!

They say UNILAG is a Brand Harvard university... Was formerly named
new college but later renamed after John Harvard.... MAUL students shld
go and make their school an actual brand and not showcasing their
ignorance to the nation... Cant they see that convenant university is
becoming a brand by showcasing her discoveries and inventions?

Abike Dabiri, a member of the House Of Representatives in an interview with Channels TV this morning said no Bill was presented to them for deliberation on this issue. GEJ and FEC usurped the powers of the National Assembly,it is ultra vires and unconstitutional. It is a dangerous precedent if it is allowed.

Re: UNILAG Shut Down Over MAU Name Change Protests by sidnazious(m): 8:45pm On May 31, 2012
In my opinion, the name changing is a bad move, majorly because it is coming at the wrong time.

Events happening in UNILAG:
-UNILAG's VC (Father) just passed away and is still being missed / mourned.
-There is no steady light or water in the school. Students are restless.
-50th anniversary is in the pipeline.

How can a reasonable person change the name of a school at this time?
And its not as if he is trying to address the problems the school is facing. Or bringing any development with it.

There is something about a name, a brand, you don't just change it overnight especially for a sensitive one like this.

Haters of UNILAG do have a rethink, will you be happy if they change your school's name like that? If you will, then good for you.

why would you make such a silly and judgemental statement.

The "freecocoa" lady is a waste of space here on nairaland, i have seen most of her posts here on nairaland and she has some friends here too that backs her up. Senseless! The day you leave planet earth things will get better for all of us.

As for Nigeria i have given up on Naija a long time ago, my girl is a 300 level student in Unilag, she's joining me here next week, away from that country!. Nigerian educational system is a waste and not even recognized outside naija. A 6 months degree holder from a foreign school have more job opportunities anyawys.

Mtchewwwww! May GOD have mercy on Nigeria!
