dayokanu:

I think the smartest ppl in life are those who grab concept really quick and make decisions while standing, but reading everyone can read jare and if you read, read cram, cram, read cram read enough it would stick someway somehow even if you are a dullard.

But you have to be sharp to get some mathematical concepts.

Why I never worked as an Engineer? In the financial sector especially , Financial Maths, modelling etc Appreciate People with core Engineering and Science background were more rewarding before the recession of 2007/2008.

e don do naw. You've sworn never to read the book but you think its all about cramming. Abi u never see books of the more you read the less you recollect?

For a doctor to see several patients a day and manage them ain't so easy. He has to put together stuff he learnt from 2nd yr to final yr without confusing them. That demands being smart. Abi you don see doc dey check diagnosis for book?
Or in the oral exams where the examiner can ask you anything (even stuff you did years back). If you are not smart na you go suffer pass. Or do you think they enjoy reading those big texts?

Although I agree with you that there are some stuff you have to cram but same applies to mathematics and its numerous formulae. All though my sec school and till I stopped taking mathematics in the uni, my highest grades were always in maths and sometimes physics but biology and human sciences really interested me.

Mine is very funny but today I have no regret doing what I am doing.
Growing up, I dreamt of being a lawyer during my primary school days however, this changed when I was told LAWYERS ARE LIARS. Being the good boy I was then, I couldn't imagine myself being a liar as such, I had to drop the idea.
Getting to Junior Secondary School, my elder siblings all opted for sciences with the 1st two saying they wanted to be Medical Doctors and the 3rd one wanting to be a petroleum Engineer, I started thinking of something out of sciences. In the later part of my JSS 2, I made up my mind to study accounting because then, chartered accountants were making it big in Nigeria and so money became my motivation. After my JSCE, I was nominated for science class but thank God I opted to change my school due to the frequent strikes in Ogun State those days and so I registered in Commercial Class in SSS1 at my new school. My dad was okay with my dreams and so also were my account teachers because I was very good in Book Keeping and Accounting and so also was I good in Mathematics and Biology. When I got to SSS3, I started thinking of what school to choose and then, UNIBEN was my best option to study Economics and Statistics because I wanted to be close to my mom's family and also I planned joining the Cult. Unfortunately, my GCE and WAEC result were not sufficient for me to get into the university because I had P7 in English Language in both exams. I thereafter opted for the Polytechnic to study Statistics with the mindset of studying Economics afterwards.
Upon completion of my OND, I started pursuing my Direct Entry admission not knowing UNIBEN would not accept my OND for admission to study ECOSTAT and when I learnt about that, I had already lost the admission. The battles then were so many because my mom's siblings felt my dad was the one influencing me to study Economics since he studied same (he graduated from UI), my dad was pissed because my uncle already assured me of admission into OAU, Ife since he graduated from Economics in Ife but I was adamant to do things my own way and my uncle then too was not pleased because he saw me as a very stubborn boy since I did not give a good reason for choosing UNIBEN although I dare not tell them my intentions of joining the cult. I lost a year and then reapplied to Ife and was given the admission to study Economics however, I chose to do my HND in Statistics alongside my BSc and for me it was rewarding.
Towards the end of my program in Ife, I started thinking of pursuing further studies in Economics and my dream then was to become a professor which was also a lost dream of my dad. However, immediately I left school, I got offers from 3banks and I opted for banking although in one of my interviews, I stated my intention of going to graduate school by 2011 and today, I am in graduate school planning to finish my Masters and then putting in for Doctorate.
I have always longed to attend Yale for my doctorate and I intend applying in the Fall although, I am not so sure my present profile matches up with those they admit but I intend putting it in my statement of purpose that I have longed to attend the school because my dad who was admitted for Doctorate studies in the Economics Department in 1974 couldn't make it because he did not get funding from the government then (I hope this blackmail would work for me because I believe they would still have it in their records) and I have since seen it as a dream to fulfill.
Today, I feel happy and fulfilled doing what I am doing because I am not only living my dream but also that of my dad although I am beginning to cross out lecturing from my future dreams although I wouldn't mind being a Research Professor.

What influenced mine was the oil well at our backyard, and the dirty black liquid from it, we used to call it Earth Oil in my dialect, we used to drink it when we were young against cough and rub it on our forehead against evil spirits. The almighty crude oil.

Interesting story. I wish you success in your endeavour. It is not easy to satisfy our parents' wishes and our own personal ambitions at the same time as many stories here have attested so far.

Dont worry about lecturing. A PhD degree gives you indepth knowledge and skills as well as specialisation in your field. You are trained to solve problems using original solutions (i.e. you can design a new methodology for solving a problem, without relying on old methods, old systems or old solutions). With a PhD, you can look at a problem and not be afraid to tackle it headlong with new ideas - as long as its in your domain of expertise. It is only in places like Nigeria that PhD holders worry about lecturing. While lecturing itself is not bad at all, it is just one of many career options for a PhD-degree holder. Having said that, some so-called PhD holders in Nigeria (names withheld) have not lived up to expectations, either in the classroom or in other endeavours.

You dont even have to be a research professor. You can be very successful as an independent researcher/consultant working for all kinds of organisations when you have a PhD. And in your field (economics) there wont be shortage of clients (banking, finance, insurance, marketing, govts., multinationals, etc) wanting someone to help them out with an economics-related researchable problem. PhD can be used for high level consulting, where you can even quote your salary in dollars (ask Ngozi Okwonjo-Iweala for more tips on that LOL). Take a look at some of the advertised consulting jobs regularly offered by DFID, USAID, The UN, The EU, etc in Nigerian dailies and you'll see what I mean.

And if your degree is from a recognised school, then it is as good as a passport to anywhere. I advise you to look at the profiles of famous research economists that you admire to see their PhD specialisation and match that with their career trajectory. Then plan your own accordingly. Dont jump into PhD without considering what you will do with it.

Every problem is researchable. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, we prefer to throw money at problems without understanding the forces at work. Thats why you will hardly find any PhD thesis on corruption in our society. Thats why successive governments pump/waste billions into power sector without researching the downstream issues (demand side) or how to tackle the key stakeholders (read: generator and diesel distributing cartels).

Welcome to the knowledge and information era. I wish you success.

I was just about to ask him if he meant to say "geologist". How Nigerians claim the title "Engineer" really baffles and pains me. If they knew what we went through to become an engineer, they might rethink and stop these nonsense.

However, there is a discipline called "geological engineering" fairly new field but doubt if it's offered in any Nigerian Institutions.

Thank you for the success wishes. I already have in mind what I want to do with my Phd and I have already have an area of primary focus. I am already profiling schools in my area of specialization and I am in touch with two of the top schools in the area. The responses so far has been wonderful since they claim I meet all necessary requirements and I have a wonderful profile however, they claim I need good recommendations from my professor as such, I am planning to do voluntary Research Assistant for 2 of my professors in the Fall.

Geological Engineers on the other hand are Engineers and are way different from your average Geologist...

I dont blame you... No Nigerian University offers Geological Engineering (even as a Masters Degree course).. But just for future sake, before you run your mouth and beat your chest about geological Engineers not being Engineers, you need to go do some research.. Virtually our entire syllabus is filled with mechanical and Electrical engineering courses and more.. From Fluid mechanics to Strength of Materials (one & two) down to Material Science, Applied electricity, Engineering Drawing 1 & 2, Rock Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, e.t.c... I am more than a geologist... I study the mechanical and engineering properties of the earth... Go figures sir.. wink AND FYI... Geological Engineering is not a new field... In the Civil Engineering world and Oil and Gas, Mech engr and no more important than Geo Engr..
