PhenomenonVFX: This Chime guy na machine o. I just love d dude. Not some people that will be screaming all over Nigerian media if they do one road. I hope he has inspired the person he hopes to be governor after him to try to outshine him. I must enter Enugu again early next year.
Also I will like to see more companies being sited in Enugu. I dont know what the governor is doing in that area.

The Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council has been reconstituted with His Royal Highness, Ambassador Lawrence Agubuzu, as chairman.

Speaking while inaugurating the newly constituted 57 member Council of Traditional Rulers at the House of Assembly Complex, Enugu, on Thursday,
Governor Sullivan Chime said the State was blessed with first class individuals as traditional rulers of communities in the State.

He noted that their presence had helped to entrench peace and development across the State.

The Governor added that the selection of members of the council had been difficult given the quality of traditional rulers in the state stressing that it was during the process that he discovered that most of them were highly accomplished and experienced individuals who had been operating behind the scene to ensure that peace reigned in the state.

“I beat my chest to present to the world our Council of Traditional Rulers. We can say that no other state can boast of the quality of the membership of this Council”, he said.

Chime said that under the law establishing it, the Council was to advise him on the maintenance of public order within the states and on any other matter, adding that the law also provided for standing committees and other structures that would enable the state “get the best out of our traditional rulers and ensure”.

He said that the law also provided for rotation of the membership of the Council every three years, saying that this and other arrangements, would help eliminate unnecessary competition for membership among the traditional rulers.

Chime sued for the continued cooperation of the royal fathers to ensure that the state continued to set the pace for rapid development of the state and peace in the country.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the Chairman of the Council His Royal Highness, Ambassador Lawrence Agubuzu, commended the Governor for reposing confidence in them.

He said, “We pledge that we will not let you down, we will do our best to support you so that you will continue to give us the best of service which you have been giving us since you took over the leadership of our dear state”.

Highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of official vehicles to the principal officers of the Council.

Apart from Ambassador Agubuzu, the other officers are their Royal Highnesses, R.S.N Eze (First Deputy Chairman), Julius Nnaji (Second Deputy Chairman), Samuel Uka (third Deputy Chairman).

Others are Royal Highnesses S.O Itodo (Grand Patron), Kingsley Chime( Patron) and Abel Nwobodo (Patron).

In my naivety I've always wondered where Sullivan is getting the money to do what he was doing, because every governor attributes his lack of performance to paucity of fund. Imagine if we witnessed 1/10 of this trend during 20years of military rule. What I am seeing is simply marvelous. One would not appreciate what I am saying except one lived in Enugu during the reign of Chimaroke. Sullivan would have become a multi-billionaire like Orji Uzo Kalu if he decided to pocket all the money and cover it up with media propaganda. May God bless his generations. However, I have an observation to make. How come our roads are always empty? Where are Igbo people and have we all vacated our land? Which business is gonna thrive in a land like ours that is laid desolate? Population has a big role to play in attracting investments, I reckon. Please can somebody help me on this.

Afam is in Lagos, Igbo son(who hardly sees anything good in the SE) Is in London, onlytruth,Dede,Eziachi and the likes are all overseas, leaving behind mediocres to govern the SE. What do you expect when a secondary school certifcate holder like ifeanyi could gather the gall to campaign for Governorship in a state like Anambra that boasts of Achebe,Zik,Ojukwu,Dora,Soludo,Ezekwesili,Alex ekwueme, and the likes...we cannot continue like this if we want our region to progress, we need to curb this menace, b4 one day we wake up to find only elderly, sick and kids in our regions while the able bodied young men and technocrats are all packed in other regions

eaglechild: pls those handling the construction of college road and environs should speed up the project.
I passed thru there and the place is a dusty mess, the houses there are coated with dust.
The road was scraped and abandoned, the residents are crying in pain.
Went to photocopy something there and the owner of the business has been coughing from the past few months.

Can someone explain why the project has been abandoned?

My brother I hope you know these places. They are Akwata and P & T Quarters. No project started by Sullivan would be abandoned, all things being equal. He is not doing it to please anybody in particular but for humanity's sake. Just be patient with him ok. grin

You have a point. The only reason we have the likes of Orji as Governor and people like Uba having the temerity to stand up and contest to be a governor, it means there's a dearth of Igbo intellegentsia living in the SE.

Prof Charles Soludo once raised this critical issue during a South East development Initiative forum. Why is it that any young Anambra or Igbo person of repute that has achieved anything in life has homes in Abuja,Lagos and elsewhere without any in Anambra and the SE? Why is it that there are no standard cities in the SE,that would attract a foreign investor to live in say Aba or Onitsha, instead of Lagos or Kano?

Eventually, that fora determined that part of the problem was the absence of quality residential estates such as Asokoro district estates in Abuja or Victoria garden city,Lekki or banana island of Lagos going on anywhere in most of the SE states. Most of our housing estates are still hyper focussed on mass housing schemes for the poor and civil servants(which is also a good thing), but with none created to cater for the needs of the rich and notable people in the society (Which is also very important to have such areas). Thus these already Igbos are unable to maintain their standard of living anywhere in the SE, thus opt to live in such estates provided in Lagos or Abuja.

The Enugu State government under Sullivan Chime promptly launched the zoo estate and the Independence L/O phase II a.k.a the Enugu centenary city less than 6 months afterwards.Being fair to Rochas, he too tried to launch the "New Owerri" initiative to build a totally modern city around the Imo concorde hotel area. The Ebonyi state government started the "Ochudo city" as a nucleus to create a modern city out of an area of Abakaliki.

The other critical states such as Abia and Anambra as usual, did not launch any new city initiative, until very recently that the greenwood estate Awka have been pondered. However, development of a modern "Anam city project", "GRA phase 2 in the Akpaka forest reserve, around Onitsha have remained nothing but a pipe dream because of lack of government support to put in basic infrastructure to enable such cities takeoff.I support Gov. Peter Obi because he has been visionary in Education,Health and economic sectors, but in Housing? ,Please nobody should start politicizing my observation by mentioning Ngozika,AHOCOL and Udoka housing estate here, which we know who started them. When it became obvious that such estates are full (as they have been for years now), government must open up new estates immediately so that people can continue to build and invest in Anambra, and not wait for 6 or 7 long years before they discover that a new estate is indeed needed. There is simply non-existent modern housing projects for Aba city in Abia state.

If you go to Asaba today, all the areas around the new airport is being developed into an ultra modern city all the way from Asaba to Ogwashi-ukwu by Anambra bourgeoisie looking for a decent place to live! The same situation happens in the outskirts of PH,where many Aba based wealthy men are building themselves decent homes. The biggest problem with states like Anambra and Abia is that since private individuals build multiple storey mass housing unit, the government of those states have completely forgoten that it is their duty to ensure the provision of decent housing units of every cadre in a well planned estate. I don't want to mention Lagos nor Abuja in how government must assist the private sector to provide decent housing. So i will use Kano as another example. The kwankwasiyya city promoted by the Kano state government to provide a decent living area for investors and employers of labour are the types of projects Anambra and Abia state governments believe isn't their concern, which unfortunately they must learn from. With the dearth of such estate in those critical states, it is nearly impossible for a business man living in Abuja or Lagos or even abroad to quickly and easily take his business to those states without first looking for land because he simply cannot find any decent estates where he could buy choice property to live and operate his business. Thus, most businesses you see in the SE are owned by people living outside the region. The young generation have come to learn this practice that you must live outside SE cities unless you are a petty trader and only finally move to your village upon retirement.

I disagree that the absence of quality residential area is the reason why High class have refused to live in Igboland. The reason is that for a lot of these high class people have no business in the South East. The only reason why they would erect a nice building most times is because they see Igboland as their Ancestral land. The government of the SE have to put in measures to make the creme de la creme of the Igbo society to remain in the SE.

Bros, i don't know how old you are, but at the proper age when the time comes for you to decide where to settle your family, you will consider:
Roads, security, decent housing/ good neighborhood, electricity, water, good schools and hospitals.

You may even consider your job last and sometimes may prefer to work in one city while your family lives in another.
I live in my house off Jakpa road in Warri but i bought a nice bungalow house in Asaba for my family because of some reasons i have enumerated.

You must think that the only reasons Nigerians go abroad and refuse to come back is because of jobs? Bros, you will be surprised to know that many Nigerians abroad can very well run their businesses even better when they are based here. But the reasons i have outlined are holding them back. Yes, lack of decent well planned estates and decent neighborhoods can make you decide never to live in a particular city over another. No disrespect meant to my dear Ibo people here, but personally, i will never live in Onitsha, even if you gave me a job paying $1 million dollars a week! grin

I'm not saying that the lack of good living condition(houses, roads etc) is not a factor. I only find it odd that it could be described as the major problem. Nigerians who go abroad, go there to get a better life and a good job tops the list of what they want. The good rods, neigbourhoods etc are secondary. Even in Lagos here, there's nothing fantastic about the infrastructure and i don't see how different it is to the states in the SE save for the fact that it's a bigger version comercially of other states in Nigeria. The only reason a lot of people will die in Lagos is not because of the standard of living but due to the availability of jobs. people will rather live in places such as Enugu, Calabar, uyo, owerri and Asaba if there were as much job opportunities as Lagos.

Enugu is not empty as some folks are insinuating. Recently while i was in Coal City, i noticed some little increase in the city's population. I equally noticed more vehicles on roads that were 2-3 years ago less busy in traffic. I was told that thousands of Igbo returnees from the North swelled Enugu's population.
Enugu is a nice place to enjoy retirement. A visit to GRA, Independence Layout and some parts of Trans- Ekulu will avail one the chance of seeing retired Igbo professionals enjoying life. More houses are needed, no doubt, but over population will kill the joy of the city for most people.

It has to be managed effectively. We don't want an Onitsha or Lagos situation in Enugu. Enugu is known as a serene sity and has to remain that. Though some parts in greater Enugu can become commercialized but it should not stain the entire city. I think we have to take a cue from what is obtainable in other countries where industries, commerce, residential areas are domiciled in different places.
