[quote author=Tena11]Fellows. My name is Yinka, a graduate from a uni here trying to make good with my life. Ive been to the american embassy 4 times already but refused. Im a mature student, looking to take a medical route in the U.S however I am aware that they do not grant visas to non-imigrants from Nigeria to study medicine since medical study there offers residency. I had to apply for undergrad admission with option to transfer credits attained here. The processing with schools went smoothly however the denials have been in the way of my progress.

The last interview I had lasted for a min or so:

VO: Why do you want to travel to the united states?
ME: To complete my undergrad degree in biology.

VO: You are 24!
ME: Yes sir

VO: what have you bn doing since completion high sch:
Me: Academics( told abt my remedials, diploman and undergrad)

VO: Tells me to hold on, then after a while he says why not apply for a Masters degree in Biological sciences?why do you want to go back to restudy bio? If u have graduated, pls reapply or if u havent complete ur education and reapply anytime.

Big Question is this.. DO I REAPPLY FOR A MASTERS? I HAVE ALL THAT IS NEEDED! AND HOW SOON
CAN I APPLY FOR SPRING or wait years for spacing? I just need candid advise ..[/qu

Dr. Yinka,I'm so sorry to hear this. Please, apply for Masters in Molecular Biology or Public Health. When you get in, you can always redirect your path. But, if you have Masters in Public Health after 3semesters here in America lots of opportunities for you, especially in the Southern part. After then, you can pursue your Medicine dream.Pls, don't give up...Your dream will surely come through.Remember, So far you can conceive it, you can achieve it..

Pls, don't leave space o. You can still apply for Spring 2013. My school is still admitting. And if your undergraduate CGPA is fair, you can be considered for Graduate Assitantship. They will give you a phone call and interview you by phone. They will waive your tuition and you will still be collecting stipends.

@jimtosam,

Do you mean waive of out state tuition + stipend but you still pay in state? Cross check that very well because waiving of tuition + stipends is usually for PhD. Except you are in one of the ivy league universities and/or you have good research already done.

Julie55: Hello house,
I was denied F1 visa last month.
The interview was so short, the VO was typing MOST of the time. He rarely looked at me.
I was asked just 4 questions-
1)Why Public Health?
Me- I have a passion to serve people, and improve the quality of health for those around me, rising need for public health specialists in Nigeria, etc
2)Who is sponsoring you?
Me- My Dad
3)What does he do?
Me- An engineer
4)What work do you do?
Me- A dentist
I answered fully. No documents were asked. After a long period of typing, he just said, Sorry....and that was all.
I was denied last year also. Same course, though a different school. So this year, I applied to a less expensive, but equally good school.
I have re-applied and will be going soon.
A few questions-
--Im trying to fill a new DS 160, but there is really nothing to change. I filled to first one as carefully, and truthfully as I could.I do not know how else that form could be filled.
--Do I need to snap a fresh passport? I still have copies of the passport I submitted last month.
--How about wearing a good sweater this time around. I felt too cold the other time.
--The 'remarks' section on my I20 says 'all funding subject to Consular Verification' Abeg apart from bank statements, what other 'verification' would they need?
--What else can I do, guys?
Hope to hear from you all!

Congratulation bro..........

Mystiqme: So I have been on this thread since 2010 and I have been following up throughout my GRE and TOEFL process, through my application process and through my spring rejects but I finally had my interview last Friday and this is how it went down.
It was pretty short (about 3 mins) as I told God I wanted the previous day and out of my over 20 documents, only 2 were requested by the VO.
I was at the Lagos embassy and about 4 VOs were interviewing:the African-American on Counter 1,one white guy on 2,one elderly guy on 3, and one other guy on the last counter.
The guy on C2 refused all the women that came for visiting(Did he think they were pregnant undecided). Anyway my token number was 174 and when i saw 173 on C2, I don dey fear but I don dey prepare my mind for a difficult interview even though I was sure I would make it.Suddenly C1 flashed 174 and I walked up to him on jelly legs. It seemed I had forgotten everything I had rehearsed. Anyway....
The Interview
Me: Good morning
VO: Pass your documents, please.
Me: I passed them. He scrutinized them and at the same time was looking at my face. Maybe he dey look this small boi wey dey go do PhD.
VO: Did you take the GRE?
Me: Yes I took it (I passed him my scores).
VO: Do you have your transcript?
Me: Yes, I do. I pass am.
VO: Looked at my transcript and asked 'What is ecology?' I guess this question came up because I studied Botany and I am going for a PhD in Ecology.
Me: I don already dey blow answer afterall na my turf na, but he stopped me and asked:
VO: What is the difference between Botany and Ecology?
Me: Botany is basically the study of plants while Ecology is the study of plants in their environment..both biotic and abiotic. Short like that, I no sabi talk too much wink
VO: So what will this degree do for you?
Me: Well, I already work here as a ...... so it will enable me get promoted more rapidly in my place of work.
As I was answering the last question He was already tearing the green ticket.
VO: Alright, I am granting you your Visa, go and collect it on Wednesday at Ikeja.
Me: In a small voice..thank you. I was trying to hide a smile but I was not successful. grin
All the best guys, I will try to be available to answer any questions. Cheers!

The name of the school is Western Illinois University (www.wiu.edu). Their tuition is even cheaper compare to other American Universities. Most of Naija guys here are on GA cos it's not easy to pay the tuition with 20hrs on campus job. And most of the times their GA here is not about grade. Cos, 2.2 guys even get GA. It's about department. I know about 4 sure departments; Communication, Economics, Mathematics, Physics. Unless if the student does not apply. They get lot of research grants from Federal Government. Others get too but a little competitive. Others may require interview but those 4, they don't always interview. I still know about 3 more in Illinois that gives GA a lot...The stipend goes to the tune of 1.1k (full).Two-third (900).

That's good. GA these days is a decision of the department rather than the school. Guys applying to school should always write the department to know of any support they render to students and it's on first come for serve bases.

My sister got her visa earlier this week.
A few lesson for anyone in a similar situation:
1. You can have as many sponsors as are available to you. As many as.......
2. She had a visiting visa she never used. That was not a problem to her. The CO was more than friendly to her.
3. School started 2 weeks ago. No problem. Deja Vu.
4. She barely passed GRE. It was a requirement by the school. The CO asked for it and she handed over her not so good score.
