Aren't you the same Acidosis who abused and insulted people the other day when the news broke?! With the sort of arguments you put up that day, I was forced to question your upbringing, morality and sanity. I refrained from commenting then because my views were sufficiently expressed.

With the nescience you have spewed up here again- true to kind- I've come to the conclusion that you're a conscience-less person!
You're actually asking us to become lawless and discombobulated like you because politicians are corrupt?? :/

Unsolicited advise: You are on a public forum, try at being civilised and stop spewing rubbish just because you have access to cheap internet.

The offender no matter his rank is a Nigerian too. It's wrong to ask for preferential treatment and/or punishment. This should serve as a deterrent to both uniformed and non-uniformed Nigerians; No one is above the law!

the bolded part IS SAME WITH MY PREVIOUS COMMENT.

Let me give a bit of psychology, the rate at which this news spread is because the man involved is a military officer. . .Fashola went that far because the man involved is a military officer.
The comments you see here and there (yours and mine inclusive) is due to the fact that the man involved is a military officer.

Had it been an agbero was the person caught on BRTlane, do you think a journalist would waste his time writing reports?

This whole thing is just to say something against the military.

You are only acting in a cow.ardly stup.id manners cos I don't see any reason why you had to post that crap above.

Wizee: U wnt2 to dismiss a colonel? D 2 ranks are diff so, its jst padi padi tin. Rank pass Rank.
Wrong my guy. Using a BRT lane is not a crime, I guess an offense, whereas the othe rnaval guy was involved in criminality , he battered , assaulted, destroyed privaye property , and commited an offense. The difference in the two is wide. There is no paddy paddy, . In the military ,,you may not know, the law does not exclude anybody military order ( not as in ORDERS) well paddy paddy may come in but laws, iinclusive without any prejudice IF DUELY REPORTED. The military frowns at crimes especially violent crimes.

25 K for anybody especially military guys is no joke . o . Do you think they'll repeat same ? Capital NO. They don't joke with their money and hate been forced to do something thus will rather walkk away fro trouble ( paying fine)

i think the fact that the officer was caught in the BRT Lane by the Hon Gov is enough embarassment already while the 25,000ngn fine is just the icing on the cake. Now you see everybody (Civilian/officers) stuck in traffic, if not you park your car and buy a BRT Ticket. shikena.

Enforcing the Law should apply to everybody afterall nobody get two heads.

No, he is not fined by court Marshal. He will just pay the LASTMA fine.

His record is intact.

I agree with you, it is not easy to be a colonel not only in Nigeria but anywhere.

@Acidosis,

Thrash that bogus psychology!
The fact that somebody at the level of a colonel in the Army committed such an offence is a huge aberration.

You said the only reason why there is so much publicity on the issue is because the man involved is a military man. What crap?! Who should be heard and seen to be the epitome of discipline and civility if not a military man? If an "agbero" commits that offence one could inappropriately excuse him based on illiteracy claims.

The above is not to say agberos should have a filled day breaking the law. But a colonel?! :O When the law enforcer becomes it's breaker and abuser. That's shameful!

Your argument above is as good as saying corruption should not be publicised and punished because a "big man" is involved. Who deserves more reprimand other than the "big man"??

Real psychology is punishing a superior officer for acts of indiscipline so all others know they are not above the law.

The officer's act is a shameful one and he deserves all the embarrassment he got. This should serve as a deterrent to would be violators.

naptu2: Spot the difference.

1) Lance Corporal Sunday Ayodeji who drove on the BRT lane in 2011, resisted arrest, fought with police, called for reinforcements and endangered citizens.

2) Colonel Ki Yusuf who was accosted by Governor Fashola

One was arrested by LASTMA, the other was arrested by A GOVERNOR....

The Colonel only respected FASHOLA and not the LAW.....
If LASTMA had accosted the Colonel, maybe some people would have been sent to their early graves....

If Fashola was the one who caught the Corporal, he wouldn't have resisted.

ndu_chucks: What's now left is for Fashola to publicly apologize to the Army for publicly embarasing a commisioned officer for cheap publicily when the whole affair could have been dealt with without the drama.

Worst comment on this thread.
Cos he is a commisioned officer,he has become a super human and very much above the law.
Re: BRT Lane: Army Officers Fined 25,000 Each by naptu2: 9:35pm On Jul 25, 2012
It's one law for everybody. Fashola has accosted okada riders, Nigerians, foreigners, bus drivers and an airforce officer. I would have been disappointed with him if he reprimanded all these people and ignored or gave special treatment to an army officer.
Re: BRT Lane: Army Officers Fined 25,000 Each by ccwizard: 11:29pm On Jul 25, 2012
In Nigeria all animals r equal but some are more equal than others. Yes Fashola is right and nobody is greater than the law. But dis is Nigeria where anytin goes. He should know that in nigeria one should never Disgrace a senior millitary officer in public cos the Nigerian millitary never forgives or forget. There will be a payback n lasma officials will be the ones to suffer. In nigeria the millitary is more powerful than the politicians. Fashola could have handled it in a better manner n the appropriate fine paided by the Colonel. I don't blame the colonel, in africa the military commands so much respect n power, thanks to our criminal politicians n any day the millitary feels threatened in anyway, u all know what's going to happen.

Uniformed men and traffic law violations

By Editorial Board

Tuesday, 18 Oct 2011

THERE have been concerns over widespread violations of traffic rules by uniformed men, a development that poses a great danger to road users. Such an unruly attitude is obviously unbecoming of professionals whose lodestars are discipline and order. The Federal Road Safety Commission recently decried the rate at which military and paramilitary officers violated traffic regulations in Lagos. The FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, Jonas Agwu, observed that uniformed men were in the habit of contravening traffic rules with impunity. As he put it, “It has become an embarrassment to us that no attempt has been made by the leadership of the various law enforcement agencies to check their men in spite of our constant appeals.” He noted that “people hide under their professional calling to break traffic laws…”

Apart from occasional violent clashes, the tendency of security operatives, especially soldiers, to disobey traffic rules, creates gridlock that sometimes causes fatal road accidents. FRSC claims that excessive speeding, traffic light violations, driving against the traffic and other acts of recklessness are perpetrated by uniformed men with impunity. According to Agwu, 10 of 50 persons arrested for not using a helmet while riding their motorcycles are uniformed men. In the past, such officers and men who found themselves in politicians’ convoy had knocked down pedestrians due to reckless driving.

Clashes between the Police and other military personnel are often attributed to flagrant violation of traffic rules. Recently, another Army-Police clash was averted at Obanikoro, Lagos Mainland during a pandemonium that occurred when soldiers in different vehicles drove through the Bus Rapid Transit lane reserved for LAMATA passenger buses operated by Lagos State. The quick intervention of the Commander, 9th Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ikeja, Brig. Gen. Sanusi Muazu, saved the day.

Occasionally, innocent citizens are brutalised on the flimsy allegation of failing to grant the right of way to military motorcades. On November 3, 2008, a young lady, Uzoma Okere, was brutalised on Victoria Island, Lagos by some personnel of the Nigerian Navy. Four ratings escorting Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade, the then Flag Officer Commanding, Logistics Command, accused Okere of using her car to obstruct their superior’s siren-blaring convoy during a traffic snarl. In May 2009, Justice Tijani Abubakar of the Federal High Court, Lagos awarded Mr. Mike Igbokwe the sum of N100 million in damages against the Nigerian Army arising from an assault on him by soldiers on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway four years earlier. Again, the security detail of an Air Vice-Marshal dehumanised three civilians in Ikeja, Lagos State, on the allegation of driving near the air force gate.

In August, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bauchi State chapter, claimed that one Andee Iheme and his wife were brutally assaulted by soldiers from the 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi at Gidan-Mai Roundabout on the allegation that the couple blocked their way.

The lawlessness of the uniformed personnel must be checked. Senior military officers should set good examples. Conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman should be discouraged by service chiefs. Military authorities should immediately issue motor vehicle traffic supervision rules for the various services. Offenders should be made to pay the appropriate fines in accordance with the authorised fine schedule. Road traffic officials should strictly enforce the rules and bring any violator to justice.

The present approach of dismissing errant other ranks by the military authorities is not enough. Senior officers that encourage their security detail to misbehave should also be held liable and dealt with accordingly. There is nothing as dangerous to the society as an unruly military. A society’s level of civilisation is best measured by the extent to which law enforcement agencies, particularly the military, subject themselves to civil authorities. As members of the civilised societies, soldiers are not expected to be above the law of the land. In 2006, a survey by Harris Poll described the United States military as the most trusted institution in the country.

There is an urgent need to reverse the poor image of the Nigerian military and other uniformed forces. They should be repositioned to be the epitome of absolute deference to constituted authorities. Curiously, Nigeria’s security men who are on peacekeeping missions abroad comport themselves and even win laurels. But, ideally, charity should begin at home.

I think, certain 'class' (not as per societal status) of individuals or groups should be given access to that BRT route --- the guv'nor included; if he wants to sit in traffic and show good example to the citizenry, fine, his own choice! I have a feeling someday, this is going to come back to haunt us if it is not reviewed!
Re: BRT Lane: Army Officers Fined 25,000 Each by naptu2: 7:09am On Jul 26, 2012
The US president's motorcade stops at traffic lights when he is not on official assignment. In the president's limousine (the beast), the only window that rolls down is the driver's side window. Why? So that he can pay tolls at toll gates. The president also pays air fares (at commercial rates) when he is using Air Force one on a private trip.

In Lagos, fire engines, ambulances and other emergency vehicles are allowed to run through stop lights and on BRT lanes when they are on an emergency mission.
Re: BRT Lane: Army Officers Fined 25,000 Each by naptu2: 7:29am On Jul 26, 2012
Civilised societies are governed by laws and rules. There is no law that permits uniformed personnel to use the BRT lane whenever they feel like.

One of the tenets of democracy/rule of law is equality before the law. Usually, the question we should ask is, "what does the law say"? However, decades of military rule has turned that question on its head. We ask "do you know who I am"?

Without laws or equal implementation of the law, we return to a state of nature where life is nasty, brutish and short. In that state, the rich and strong do whatever they want, while the masses suffer. Is that the kind of Nigeria we want?

^^Î saw some of your comments on the other thread when the news of the colonel & the Lagos State governor first broke.

From your posts on this matter, I presume you are either in the military or you have close ties to it.

The arrogance of you brasshats is breathtaking. It is not your fault though. A sense of entitlement developed over a 40 year period is not going to go away easily. But go away it must. And it will!

Doctors/nurses and other medical personnel rushing to the hospital/clinic are not allowed to drive on the BRT lane. Teachers who are responsible for educating the next generation are not allowed to drive on the BRT lane. These two professions (medicine & education) preserve life and give it meaning and yet, teachers and doctors have to play by the rules like everyone else. And Nigerian soldiers, who are nothing but legalized murderers expect to be given preferential treatment? What have soldiers done for this country to justify special treatment? What exactly?

This country has gone down the tube because of you soldiers. Today, baby-faced ex-generals who have done nothing noteworthy (other than fighting a bush war 35 years ago) own oil prospecting licenses (worth billions of dollars) and state assets acquired through dubious means. I ask again, what good has the military done for the rest of Nigeria?

While your job description is to destroy, this country needs those who can build.

Give way to those who can deliver. Your time has passed.
