The Yagbas are a major group in Okunland in terms of population, land size and in the number of local government areas. They have three local government areas. These are Yagba East, Yagba West and Mopamuro LGA, formerly NorthEast Yagba) with headquarter at Isanlu, Odo Ere and Mopa respectively.

The other local governments where the Yagbas make up a good part of the population are Ikole and Oye LGAs. Altogether, there are about 75 towns, villages and hamlets in Yagbaland, all Yoruba speaking from Ile Ife and the old Oyo.

Samuel Johnson (1921) in his history of Yoruba remarks the Yagbas are the most north easternly tribes of Yoruba, they are distinguished by three long tribal marks on each cheek far behind, converging to a point at the angle of the mouth.

The tribal marks can only be seen among very old people now as it is no longer the vogue. There is only one stroke difference in the tribal marks between the East and the Western Yagba people.

The Yagba appear to be an offshoot of the Yoruba tribe speaking a dialect of the Yoruba tongue. Formerly they consisted of a number of units independent of each other and recognising no central authority. They suffered severely from Nupe and Yoruba raids and had it not been for the British occupation, they would probably have disappeared as a separate race. A century ago, this unprepossessing and much harried remnants comprised eleven units of which Ipao, Irele, Oke Ako, and Itapaji were annexed by Aiyede, while Ere, Okeri, okoloke, isanlu Esa, Okunran Egbe, Ile Ife, Ejuku, Mopa and Isanlu were tributary to Bida.

Subsequently, Ere and Okeri were given to Ilorin and remained under the influence of Ilorin fief-holders until 1909 when they were made independent and became, like Egbe, part of Pâtégi Division. By this time, Ife, Ejuku, Mopa, and Isanlu had been incorporated in Kabba province as independent units while Ipao, Irele, Oke Ako and Itapaji remained under Aiyede in the southern province.

Harold Courtlander (1973) in his tales of Yoruba Gods and Heroes says: Iyagba (Yagba) was a Yoruba site on Niger River near its confluence with the Benue River. An account of Iyagba origin says that in an ancient days a certain regional chief (whose name is not remembered) had a dispute with his Oba and was forced to exile. He reached the Niger and settled there with his family. After he died, his wife made her living by selling cooked food for those who travelled up and down the river.

She came to be known, not by her name but as Iyagba; the old woman and the site itself was referred to as Iyagba. The term also designates a Yoruba sub group and the region it occupies in proximity presumably to the place where the fleeing chief and his wife settled.

THE YAGBA EKITIs
These are the people in the south west Yagba towns of Irele, Oke Ako, Itapaji, Ipao, Iye, and Aiyede.

Kogi State government have started tracing people that came in-contact with the reported COVID-19 patients.

The commissioner of Health, Dr Haruna Saka, disclose in a statement, that was released in lokoja on Saturday, He said, the state government in-conjunction with the World Health Organization officials (WHO), tested the individuals that came in-contact with the COVID-19 cases recorded by NCDC, and all came back negative.

NCDC recorded index in Kogi state is Ridiculous, its not true.

Dr Hurana Saka, also asked NCDC what they stand to gain by manufacturing COVID-19 results.

The statement reads:

“NIgeria Center For Disease Control (NCDC) claims a 62 year old man and his son from Kabba LGA of Kogi state tested positive to Covid-19. According to the son, his father, who is hypertensive and diabetic, had attended a burial ceremony where he was stung by bees. He then developed facial problems from the sting and was taken to the Hospital. The facial swellings subsided but the body weakness persisted where eventually the managing Doctor discovered he had High Blood Sugar, which the Doctor continued to manage. “The Doctor confirmed that there was no time the patient presented with fever, cough or difficulty in breathing. The only complaint was that of general body weakness. The Doctor had no reason to refer the patient to FMC Lokoja except on the insistence of the patient because they felt he was not getting better. “On reaching FMC on the 24th of May 2020, FMC claimed the patient was referred to them on account of 1 week history of fever, cough and difficulty in breathing with high suspicion of Covid-19, a claim the referring Doctor has vehemently refuted.

“The ideal thing to do, if there are no hidden agenda, is for the State’s Covid-19 management team to be invited to pick up the patient to the the State’s holding area for testing and onward management.

“According to management of FMC Lokoja, the patient declined the intervention of the state case management team and was said to have left for Abuja for further treatment by 6am the following morning. However, the letter the Kogi State Epidemiologist eventually received from NCDC informing the State of the fictitious claim showed that the patient was referred to Abuja from FMC using FMC’s ambulance. “On reaching Abuja, a Covid-19 test was hurriedly conducted and returned positive within 24hours! It’s ridiculous. “It should be mentioned also that the patient’s relation initially cried out to us to help evacuate them from the National Hospital but on arriving there to evacuate them, and conduct a confirmatory test using a private molecular laboratory as well as Kogi State rapid test kits, the patient eventually denied us the opportunity to get it done, siting fear of receiving punishment from the Federal Government (NCDC). Being able to carry out this independent verification will have put to rest this matter once and for all. “We also wish to categorically state that though NCDC has consistently refused to support the State in her fight against Covid-19, WHO had been part of our team till date. Although, NCDC refused to follow their own protocols on visiting the State, WHO staff who traveled out of our State and returned have always obeyed the rule of self isolation for 14 days,” He concluded.

Chelsea teenage star player Callum Hudson-Odoi has been arrested at his home during lock-down after inviting a model he met online, according to reports.

Channels TV reports that INEC made the decision on the grounds that the lead margin between Smart Adeyemi who polled 80,118 votes and Dino Melaye who got 59,548 is 20,570 was lower than the 43,127 registered voters in 53 polling units of 20 registration areas in the zone.

There is blood in the streets, the blood of our nation's women and the blood of our brothers and sisters caught up in acts of xenophobia. What we have seen unfold over the last few days is abhorrent and has left law-abiding South Africans speechless. But saying nothing does nothing.

In my life and career, I have worked and lived in many African countries. At one time Uganda, Rwanda, Swaziland, the DRC and Lesotho, have all been my home. The welcomes have always been plentiful and many of our colleagues across the MTN Group will testify to the fact that wherever our MTN travels take us, we are treated with respect and dignity. Africa shaped me into who I am, and it helped build my career, to be the CEO I am todayThese are complex issues and we know there are many factors fuelling this violence and strife, but my message to all of us is simple - our fight for human rights has shaped our history and I call on all people to stand together against xenophobia and gender-based violence.

At MTN South Africa, we believe in the power of diversity and we unequivocally condemn all forms of violence, oppression and intimidation.

Violence against women
To our women, I am sorry. I am sorry that men are failing our country. I am sorry that instead of driving change, men have chosen to fight hashtags. An injury to one is an injury to all. And I am sorry that the language of violence, disrespect, power and oppression has become so deeply ingrained in our culture that our "normal" is a brutal reality that frightens and limits women and girls across our country.

I am a father to two girls, a husband to one wife, and a first born to a single woman who raised me. It pains me to my core that they cannot walk in our streets because their safety and security is never a given. As men, we have failed and before men shout me down with the flimsy "not all men" argument, think this through.

Every sexist joke, every loaded stare, every whistling catcall and every lingering touch created the smallest wave and it is those waves that have now coalesced into the tsunami of abuse, violence and death that stalks the women of this country.

What will we, the men of South Africa, do to change? How will we hold each other accountable? Do we have the strength of character to stand up to our brothers and challenge those comments, those looks and those snide remarks that created this tsunami of violence? I want to call out the men who beat women - you are cowards.

Yes, this is a complex issue. But we can't pretend this is a "them" issue - this is an "us" issue. As men, the smallest actions of change will start to turn the tide against this violence that plagues women. Uyinene Mrwetyana had her whole life in front of her but now, she will be remembered for how she died.
In my house there is no room for violence. In the MTN company that I lead, there is no room for prejudice. What we are seeing is an aberration, it must stop, and I commit to playing my part in the hope that others will join me in speaking up against gender-based violence.
Together we can overcome.
Prejudice suffocates diversity, in the same way that xenophobia and violence exist to oppose anything that is different. What we are currently seeing in the streets of our cities is despicable.

Since 1994, no other company has built a Pan African outfit that can rival MTN's scale and reach. We are Africa and Africa is our home. Let us stand together against gender-based violence and xenophobia.

The Kogi State PDP governorship primary election ended abruptly in the early hours of today when gunmen invaded the venue of the election, Lokoja Confluence Stadium.

According to reports, voting had ended and sorting of votes were going on when the gunmen came to the venue at about 1:45 am and started shooting from different directions. Votes in eight out of the 10 ballot boxes have already been counted and sorted out before the disruption by the gunmen.

Aspirants, delegates, and others scampered for safety while the number of casualties has yet to be ascertained. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee was also said to have narrowly escaped the bullets of the gunmen.

One of the delegates from kogi western region told 9jadopest in an interview that the accreditation and voting process had being completed successfully and he also gave us an insight on the leading candidate (engr. musa wada) before the shooting process.

At least seven out of 16 governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the coming election in Kogi state have stepped down.

The aspirants, who are said to be from the eastern part of the state, also collapsed their stuctures to support Captain Idris Wada, a former governor pursuing a return to office. Those that stepped down include AVM Salihu Atawodi, Muhammed Tetes, Emmanuel Omebije, Grace Iye Adejor, Dr Victor Adoji.

We learnt that a spokesperson for the Kogi East Elders Council (KEEC), Arc Gabriel Aduku, noted this while addressing journalists in Lokoja, the capital of the state ahead of the PDP governorship primaries. Aduku revealed that there was a meeting between the elders and nine governorship aspirants from the area.

According to him, those who attended the meeting deliberated and came to a conclusion that there was no need for everyone from the area to contest, but that they should look for an experienced aspirant.

Nigeria Army High Command has issued a signal of “carefull” in dealing with members of to its rank and file in the aftermath of the Taraba killing of police officers.

This was continued in a confidential memo from the Chief of Army Staff, General Buratai to all military personnel operating outside the official assignments.

According to daily post,The Enugu state Police command has arrested one Sampson Nwaobasi, an Enugu-based farmer, for allegedly killing his business partner, Mr Friday Ani, over payment of proceed made from farming business.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Monday in Enugu that the incident happened on July 31 in Agbani community.

Amaraizu said that the deceased and one Paul Eze were all partners in the farming of cucumber as the deceased and Eze had raised money to the suspect, who does the farming, sells same and shares profits.

“It was futher explained that his victim, is a student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Named "ani" and his business associate had met his untimely death when he had demanded from the suspect payment of his share of the proceed.

“It was gathered they were to share N6 million as the business thrived for four months; however, the suspect allegedly started avoiding his partners which made them believe that he may have craftily reinvested the proceed without them knowing.

“The deceased traced the suspect to the farm to find out what has been happening; and in the farm, misunderstanding arose between them which allegedly resulted in the killing of Ani by the suspect and burying him inside the bush.

“The deceased was said to have been reported missing by relations who could not immediately find out what happened.

“Following suspicious ways the story appeared, Commissioner of Police, Mr Sulaiman Balarabe, directed for investigation in which the suspect was nabbed by police operatives in partnership with neighborhood watch group members from the community where he was hiding,’’ he said.

The police spokesman disclosed that the suspect had been helping police operatives in their investigation in relation to how he allegedly killed his victim and quickly buried him inside the bush.

Amaraizu noted that the suspect had however maintained in his confessionary statement that the money in question is not to the tune of N6 million but N300,000.

He said that the suspect also maintained that he never wanted to kill the deceased and that the deceased wanted to kill him over the money but he had to struggle-out the knife from him and stabbed him to death.

According to Reports from West African reporters (WAR), The Directors of Local Government (DLGs) in kogi state are alleged to have withdrawn N62 million each and handed it over to Mr. Yahaya Bello, the state Governor.

A senior local government official in the personnel department in one of the local governments in Kogi East, who also spoke to WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR) in a telephone, say the DLGs told the bank they want to use the money to pay salaries.

He however said the bank honoured the cheque making it possible for each of the DLGs to withdrew N62 million.

Rather than use the money to pay salaries, they handed the sum of N1.3 billion over to Bello, the state Governor and refused to pay salaries.

Another senior official in the finance department, told the newspaper that his DLG had called a staff meeting to brief them on the situation.

He said the DLG told the workers that they can only get 50% salaries as against 100%. A situation the workers rejected and demanded they will rather get 100% payment of nothing.

Mr. James, who preferred only his first name mentioned, told the newspaper that local government workers are been owed 40 months salaries.

The newspaper had also earlier reported how a new generation bank had dishonoured cheques from the Kogi state DLGs on the ground that they have instruction from the federal government to honour only cheque that is meant to pay salaries.

A situation the state and the DLGs have allegedly connive and withdrew the money and handed same to the Governor. The Buhari administration through Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has granted Local Government financial autonomous. Making it possible for the council funds to be credited to them directly without passing through the state account.

This approach was address the state joint local government account that has over time posed a challenge in the development of local councils by the way the state Governors simply take the council funds and spent.

When WAR sought the explanation of kogi state government, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, the Director General – Media and Publicity to the Kogi state Governor, declined comment.

The woman, who goes by the Twitter name Plant Based Barb, claimed the cholesterol in egg yolks makes them more damaging than cigarettes.

She said: "One egg = five cigarettes!? Egg yolks are loaded with cholesterol. A medium-sized egg contains 186 mg of cholesterol, which is 62 percent of the recommended intake. Eating eggs is worse for your health than smoking!"



It is unclear how Barb calculated that the cholesterol in eggs is more damaging than all the poisons and tar in cigarettes, but it seems safe to say her conclusion is erroneous.

November 16 governorship election in Kogi State, a cross-section of women in the State have vowed to support any woman with firm capacity and fearless stance during the election.

The people said they were ready to drop political affiliation to ensure that a woman with good character and ability to lead is supported to lead the State in the next four years.


The women, under the auspices of Women Supporting Women (WSW), stated this when they stormed the national secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to purchase governorship nomination and expression of interest forms for the Kogi Central senatorial candidate of the party in the last general elections, Natasha Akpoti.

Speaking with the media shortly after the forms were presented by the SDP national organising secretary, Emeka Atuma, the leader of the group and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hajia Ummihani Otokiti, noted that the project of having a woman to lead the state is beyond political party affiliation.

The SDP national organising secretary expressed surprise over the decision of the women, saying he has not seen women contributing money to buy governorship forms for another woman.

According to him, Akpoti is strong and an enigma of hope, pointing out that, SDP is women-friendly and encourages women participation in politics.


He explained that this made the party to wave N10 million naira nomination fee, adding that the women will only pay for expression of interest form.


Responding, Akpoti appreciated the women for their strong belief in her vision, noting that she would consult stakeholders within and outside the state and get back to them.


“I am surprised by the nomination forms by the Women Support Women Organisation. I appreciate them and also understand the overwhelming task that lays ahead, that is why I told them to give me time so I can make some consultation with the stakeholders within and outside the state and get back to them in few weeks considering the time for the submission of forms”, she said.


On how she intends to change the narrative in a patriarchy society like Nigeria, Akpoti maintained that it has always been her dream to break into the patriarchy society like Nigeria.

According to kogireports, Kogi state Deputy Governor, Elder Simon Achuba has demanded for the immediate payment of his outstanding salaries and allowances that has been withheld since 2017.

In a letter sent to Kogi state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello by Achuba’s lawyers, Falana and Falana Chambers, the accumulated statutory allocations the state government has withheld is N819,709,980.

Achuba’s lawyers gave Kogi state government seven days ultimatum to pay the Deputy Governor or face legal action.

The letters goes thus:
“As you are no doubt aware, our Client’s office is a creation of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As Amended).

“Accordingly, the office is statutorily enttled to the prompt release of all allocations due to it as appropriated by the Kogi State House of Assembly and signed into law as the budget of the State by your Excellency.

“Our client has informed us that your Excellency’s Administration has consistently refused to give approval for the release of funds for the smooth running of the office of the Deputy Governor even after memos to that effect have been approved by your office. In particular, the statutory allocations approved for the office of the Deputy Governor have been withheld by the State Government since 2017.

“The accumulated statutory allocations the state government has withheld is N819,709,980.oo (Eight Hundred And Nineteen Millon, Seven Hundred And Nine Thousand, Nine Hundred And Eighty Thousand Naira) which includes travel allowances, hotel bills, pledges and outstanding monthly impress and salaries due to our client as the Deputy Governor of Kogi State. These said statutory allocations are duly captured in the Kogi State Appropriation Laws of 2017, 2018 and 2019 supported by various memos sent your office since 2017 which were duly approved without cash backing till date.

“Notwithstanding the fact that the statutory allocations have been illegally withheld our client has continued to carry out his functions as the Deputy Governor of Kogi State. In as much as our client is prepared to continue to discharge the enormous responsibilities of his office he is currently hampered by lack of funds which has wide ranging implications for the State even as it prepares for the forthcoming gubernatorial election.

“In view of the foregoing, we have our client’s instructions to request Your Excellency to use your good offices to ensure the immediate payment of the withheld statutory allocations legitimately appropriated for the office of the Deputy Governor of Kogi State since 2017.
