Kobojunkie:

Has the police ever come to your house for you, and your wife been able to single-handedly keep them from you?
I think you are missing the issue here. The woman has a right to try to protect her husband, BUT have the authorities ACTUALLY gone to see him and been kept away from him? Or is it the case that they sit back instead claiming that a less than 5ft woman has been able to hold them off for so long.

How many people have actually gone to the president’s house to see and were turned around by this small, next to illiterate woman? Did she have a machine gun or something to fight them with?

Ermm. . .I am not sure what you are driving at, but it is public knowledge that the acting president has tried to see him twice, but was turned down. Selected governors have also tried to see him but turned down. Traditional rulers were turned down.

It is perfect not to want to see anyone if he followed procedure and is on a sick leave.

Do you really believe anyone can occupy the presidential villa, and still not be accessible? He can use Government paraphernalia and all because he is still PRESIDENT. We REFUSED to impeach him, so yes, he can use government paraphernalia. Not sure why you BLAME him for that.

Not blaming him for anything. This thread is about Turai who has decided to complicate all issues surrounding the president by wanting to eat her cake and have it. I guess you are right, we REFUSED to impeach him.
Politics / Re: Turai’s Latest Ploys by aahmed112: 6:44pm On Apr 03, 2010
I don't quite agree. As long as he chooses to remain the substansive president, he is public property and liable to the nigerian people.

She cannot exercise her matrimonial authorities at the expense of the people he is purpotedly leading. Allow him resign and everyone would move on and not budge about all the discretion with his health.

How can u occupy the presidential villa, use all paraphenalia of government and tell us we have no to right to ask you any questions? Silly to me.
Career / Re: The Reality Of Overqualification - Are People Getting Overqualified? by aahmed112: 3:04pm On Apr 02, 2010
Further education in itself is not a bad thing. Obtaining an MSc or an MBA after graduation is not necessarily a downside, even though I would advise you get some experience first to help define what you want to do.

However, it is the way the labour market in Nigeria has conceived education that is driving the wrong behaviours. For a graduate position of a non-specialist job, why do we need a masters degree for it? This way, people just graduate and look for the nearest country to run to and get a masters degree, without a proper evaluation of how it even affects a potential career path.

I am currently doing a masters after working for 3 years, and I hear all these fresh graduates in my class saying, "I can only go back to nigeria if they are ready to pay me N 500,000"!! And I tell them, I better not be teaching you anything if I am paying you that much!! But truth is, they do not even know anything other than having been through a string of concentric classroom education. After an average 5-6 years moving from course to course, how much of that value can you really translate into results for a hiring company?? Education ends up being seen as a qualifier, rather than an enabling tool.

Thisday just confirmed the story. It seems the drama is not yet over afterall

Yar’Adua Hosts Imams, Associates at Aso Rock

THISDAY has confirmed that President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who has not been seen in public since taking ill in November last year, met with close friends, associates and clerics on Tuesday night and also yesterday evening at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

On Tuesday, he met with his businessman friend, Alhaji Dahiru Manga; a member of the House of Representatives representing the Faskari Constituency, Hon. Inuwa Shehu Imam; and Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State, who is his son-in-law.

Yesterday, he met with four Islamic clerics – the Chief Imam of the Abuja National Mosque Ustaz Musa Mohammed; leader of the Izala Muslim sect in Katsina State, Sheik Yakubu Musa; Sheik Isa Pantami; and the President of the Supreme Council of Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN), Sheik Ibrahim Datti Ahmed.

The four clerics were said to have offered prayers for his health as well as for the nation in these “trying times”.
A source close to the family said it would still take “a few more weeks” for the president to be “fully ready” as he recuperates from his illness which saw him hospitalised for three months at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

“For now,” the source said, “he will only meet with friends and associates as he recuperates from his illness. He has decided not to meet with any state official in an official capacity for now. When he finally decides to do so, he will start with the leadership of the National Asse-mbly.”

No timeframe was given by the source, but he was confident the president would be back to his seat “possibly next month”.
It was also not clear when the president will meet with Acting President Goodluck Jonathan who has been holding fort since Yar’Adua took ill.

The Chief Imam of the Abuja National Mosque arrived a little late at the mosque for the sunset prayers but apologised and explained to the faithful that he had gone in company with three other Muslim clerics to see President Yar’Adua in Aso Rock.
He told worshippers after the prayers that on their arrival at the Villa, the clerics were ushered in to see the president who was seated with his wife, Turai, with his Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Col. Mustapha Onoyiveta.

The Imam said President Yar’Adua stretched out his hand and shook everyone of them. Yar’Adua was also said to have joined them in prayers, raising his hands in supplication.

When the prayers ended and they rose to leave, according to the Imam, Yar’Adua shook their hands again. This was a few minutes after 6pm yesterday.
Significantly, though, the president was not quoted as saying anything, confirming early reports that he was yet to fully regain his voice although he is believed to be undergoing speech therapy.

Uztaz Mohamed repeated his story at the 8pm prayers last night and expressed displeasure at the way the health of the president has been portrayed in the media.

Politics / Timepre Sylva - The New Ibori. Alledged N 100bn Scandal. by aahmed112: 2:18am On Mar 28, 2010
Bayelsa State governor in a N100 billion scandal

Timpriye Sylva, the Bayelsa State governor, is set for trouble with Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as the agency prepares to slam him with a multiple-count charge of money laundering and diversion of public funds to the tune of about N100billion.

Three top officials of Mr. Sylva’s cabinet were last week detained by the EFCC in relation to similar crimes, but the anti-corruption agency said that this is just a tip of the iceberg as the state governor is the ultimate purpose of the investigations.

“The whole thing is about the governor. All the other officials are just collaborators. The governor is the ultimate beneficiary of the corruption,” an EFCC official declared in an interview.

The EFCC stated that for the past one year, the agency has been carrying out investigations on the state governor, adding that the commission now has sufficient evidence with which to prosecute the governor.

Mr. Sylva’s crimes

According to the EFCC, Mr. Sylva and his collaborators, from last year, began a chain of money laundering activities, which altogether are valued at almost N100 billion.

One major transaction carried out by the governor in 2009, through his collaborators, involved a one-time transfer of 40 million US dollars.

“Sometime last year, he (Timpriye Sylva) transferred the sum of $40 million allegedly for offshore savings, using a dummy company called Bayelsa Oil Company,” the source said.

Again, Mr. Sylva is alleged to have received a N75 billion loan facility from a consortium of banks. The facility was not used for any project in the state, the EFCC said.

In the same year,

“Without budgetary allocation or approval by the state House of Assembly, he(Mr. Sylva) released N1.8billion as consultancy fee for the establishment of a micro-finance bank for the state. The micro-finance bank does not exist,” a source in the EFCC said.

The source added that there is a long list of vices attributed to Mr. Sylva and that ongoing investigations would reveal more, adding that the governor had more than a case of money laundering pending. He will also answer questions in relation to asset declaration.

“He bought shares and property in Nigeria and overseas between 2002 and 2007 while he was an aide to one of the ministers. These assets were not declared in his asset declaration form when he assumed office in 2007,” the EFCC operative said.

Collaborators in crime

Mr. Sylva could not have accomplished all these by himself, the EFCC said.

“There’s no way the governor would have done all these by himself without the help of the commissioner for finance,” the source said.

Last week, Francis Okukoro, the Accountant General of the state; Abbot Clinton, the director of treasury; and Ikobho Anthony Howells, the director of finance, were remanded in an Abuja prison. Their trial is expected to begin on April 13, 2010. A fourth party, Charles Sylva Osuala, the finance commissioner, according to the EFCC, is at large and has now been declared wanted by the commission. The trio are being held on account of money laundering and diversion of public funds to the tune of about N2.4 billion. This does not include the allegations being prepared against Mr. Sylva.

Unknown to the governor and his officials, the anti-graft agency had been monitoring their activities for well over a year.

“The investigation has been ongoing for almost a year, but we had to wait until we had enough evidence against them. We know all the details of the transactions that they’ve done. For example, we were alerted when the $40 million transfer was done. That was sometime in August, 2009,”

According to the source, Mr. Sylva and his accomplices first opened about five different bank accounts in Union Bank Plc. With these accounts, the group took overdraft facilities to the tune of about N2 billion under the guise of using it to augment salaries.

Earlier this year, on 22 January, the group allegedly moved about N350 million to a bureau-de-change in Kano.

“This is a typical case of money laundering. They first sent the money to Kano in naira, and then they changed the money to dollars and then moved it from one person to the other till the money became lost in transit.”

When contacted, the spokesman of the EFCC, Femi Babafemi, declined to speak on the matter.

“This is an ongoing investigation and I cannot comment on it,” he said.

But the case against the state governor is not one that the EFCC will pursue in a hurry. For one, he remains protected by his immunity until he leaves office in 2011. The EFCC says that they are willing to wait until then.

“We cannot prosecute him until he leaves office but we will prosecute the other people involved,” an EFCC operative said.

@ paddy lo

I am not sure you have a strong argument on how his professional experience is of significant advantage to his management of a Nigerian ministry in one year. He would probably spend half of the time learning the ropes.

Okonjo Iweala pursued a 21-yr old career as a development economist; spent a lot of time formulating policies for countries at the world bank! That indicates sound knowledge of economic development factors, and knowing where the balances need to be - debt cancellation was evidence of this knowledge at display.

On the other hand, my friend from Goldman Sachs; investment banking; hedge funds; risk-taking >> nigerian economy?? I do not see the correlation in those fields my friend.

I repeat, not taking anything away from his personal ability, but closing transactions in Goldman Sachs is sure not the same as the nigerian economy.

again i hope the guy from Goldman Sachs gets the Finance Ministry
that alone will be enough for me

While not trying down his private sector achievements, Im not sure how much his Goldman Sachs experience would contribute to his success. The only thing he might bring is his vast exposure, but I beg to say that in this environment, experience of the public sector is very key to success, let alone the nigerian peculiar environment!

In my opinion, nigerian-based professionals with international acclaim would do a better job! But like I say, its all postulation at this point, I hope Mr. Aganga can prove himself - time will tell!

For the singular act that her courage to stand up to illegality instigated the political solution we have today is enough to get her back. Jonathan is just seeking more support and courage with the people around him, as we all know nothing meaningful can be achieved by anyone within the spate of time they have. Who else does he need other than Dora? She might have said too much sometimes, but someof what she has said has saved us today.

Disappearance of Zubair Ali Gafai, Yar’Adua’s cousin, raises opposition fears

Written by Saharareporters, New York   Thursday, 04 March 2010 14:04

The interview reeked of a PR job organized by members of the kitchen cabinet, as part of their attempts to hoodwink Nigerians using a foreign television stations with immense popularity, such as Al Jazeera. Saharareporters had reported a few days ago that Yar'Adua's wife was planning the kind interview Yar’Adua gave to the BBC in January, with the objective of painting a rosy picture of his recovery. It is apparent that the Al Jazeera broadcast using Gafai was the clincher.

Since granting the interview, however, Mr. Gafai has disappeared, reportedly into neighboring Niger Republic, and his disappearance has raised fears that he may be organizing Niger-based mercenaries to attack or kill opposition politicians who endorsed the removed of Yar'Adua from office.

Late last year, through his Katsina Peoples Congress, Gafai, a former state legislator, stormed the palace of the Emir of Katsina to urge him to discipline former House of Representatives Speaker, Masari, for “unguarded utterances” or strip him of the traditional title of “Dallatun Katsina” and membership of the Emirate Council.

Masari's offence was that he had endorsed the public petition of "Group 53" which had asked Yar'Adua to resign from office in December 2009.

What rubbish truth? It is so evident she does not understand what her job entails. If she has so much of an internal conflict between her conscience and what her job demands of her, she had better resign.

You do not stay in a government and start to propagate the bi-polarity, even though it is evident there is one. The last thing we need at this point is a stakeholder announcing that some people within her own arm of government are behind the political issues. What value have those interviews added to the situation?

You cannot put your personal opinions on blast, and the next day you are forced to state something contrary as being the government position; those are signs of a personality disorder. Take the long walk and stop being a parrot!

The handlers of the ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua who sneaked him into the country in the wee hours of today have not wasted any time in trying to wrest power from Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.

Unconfirmed reports speak of plans to make him resign if he doesn't toe the line now being drawn by Turai Yar'Adua who is now effectively in charge of the presidency. A number of ministers who were deemed to have been disloyal to Mr Yar'Adua, are also slated to be sacked, and Dora Akunyili is said to be top on that list.

A source in Aso rock confirmed that officials of the State Security Service had this afternoon gone into the office of Mr Jonathan and conducted a thorough search although it is not immediately clear what they were looking for. They were allegedly working under the directives of Mrs Yar'Adua.

Only a few hours after he arrived the country, and while he lies convalescing in a ‘clinic', aides to the President began systematically to divest Mr Jonathan of any opportunity to exercise the powers of the presidency. He has been denied access to the President and to any information that will keep him abreast of the unfolding drama. Sources say he is barely managing to avoid embarrassment as events keep changing around him and he only gets to hear of the changes after they were announced

As early as 11.31am, while he prepared for the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, a security detail entered the chambers and immediately secured the president's chair to prevent Mr Jonathan from sitting on it. Less than one hour later, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Yayale Ahmed announced that the Council meeting has been postponed. Instead, Mr Jonathan was scheduled to have a private meeting with the ministers. That meeting eventually lasted less than 10 minutes and the confusion was evident in the faces of some of the ministers who appeared to be sleep walking .

As part of the process of demoting Mr Jonathan, Presidential spokesperson, Segun Adeniyi has announced that from now on the Acting president will revert back to his previous status of vice President, although he will still need to hold the fort while the President recuperates

However, there are indications that none of this is happening with Mr Jonathan's consent as he remained locked out of the decision making process. Although no one has come out to say he is under house arrest, sources say after the search of his office, the Acting president was effectively kept apart and the coterie of visitors that has been around him in the last two weeks is no longer evident.

As a sign that Mrs Yar'Adua is now in charge of running the presidency, the Acting President has been scheduled to meet with her this evening, and sources say the fate of Mr Jonathan may depend on how that meeting goes.

Abuja on overdrive: Yar’Adua “on his way home”

Nigeria’s federal capital, Abuja, is awake and buzzing at this hour with the startling information that Umaru Yar’Adua is on his way back Nigeria, 90 days after he was evacuated in a medical emergency. Some officials claim to have received text messages from some of Yar’Adua’s aides in Jeddah claiming that Nigeria’s sick “leader” would arrive at 2:00 AM, Nigeria time.
Although guarded Saharareporters sources had first claimed they were not officially aware of Yar’Adua’s return, they have been more forthcoming in the past hour that the story is true. Panic-stricken ministers and officials are in the dark about the latest information regarding Yar’Adua.
On the ground as of the time of writing this report, there are no reported troop movements or any airport ceremony that may indicate such an event, but the strong rumours are taking on a life of their own in Abuja.

The equally bizarre development is that Nigeria’s six–man ministerial delegation to Saudi Arabia arrived Riyadh at 6:00 AM (Nigerian time) today to find itself in an embarrassing effort to reach the King of Saudi Arabia, which was to be a step towards reaching Yar’Adua.

Their first order of business was to deliver a goodwill message to the King after which they were to have proceeded to Jeddah to meet Yar’Adua but they were shocked when the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs told the delegation that the King could not meet with them. He reportedly accepted their good will letters, thanked them for coming and told them that Yar’Adua had been “discharged” from hospital and was “on his way to Nigeria.”

The response of the Saudi authorities left the ministerial delegation stranded in Riyadh as they didn’t know what to do. It is now expected that they will return to Abuja early tomorrow.

Signs that new intrigues had crept into the ministerial trip emerged on Sunday night when a few minutes to departure to Saudi Arabia from Abuja, the ministers were denied departure as it was claimed that the Saudi authorities denied them landing rights, but the Saudi ambassador to Nigeria denied that claim.

When Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ojo Maduekwe, showed up on Monday at the Presidential Villa to address the media, he had changed both the itinerary and mission of the six-man team. In preparing the mind of the Nigeria public for what would happen, he shockingly said the trip to Saudi Arabia was aimed at visiting the King of Saudi Arabia to thank him for taking care of Yar’Adua, and not to visit him in the hospital. That was not exactly the mission when the delegation was set up last Wednesday at the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council.

This evening’s development is a strange development, as it comes only days after Turai Yar’Adua was quoted as saying her husband would be returning home in 10 days. There are no indications as to Yar’Adua’s exact health situation, but it curious that he will be arriving in dead of the night with any official airport ceremony planned which has heightened fears that he might returning as a “packaged” person. There is not any indication whether the National Assembly, which is dominated by the People’s Democratic Party, would be insisting on his being checked out by doctors before he can seek to take back power.

Goodluck Jonathan became Acting President two weeks ago. Saharareporters sources said Jonathan was informed about Yar’adua’s impending return only a few hours ago.

AC gov candidate, Dipo Dina, shot dead

By Lekan Adetayo and Ademola Oni, Published: Tuesday, 26 Jan 2010

Action Congress governorship candidate in the 2007 elections in Ogun State, Otunba Dipo Dina, was late on Monday evening shot dead by yet unknown gunmen near Sango Ota.

Dina, according to security sources, was attacked while returning from Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, to his home in Lagos.

An aide of the politician told one of our correspondents on phone that Dina, who was locked in a fierce legal battle with the Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, over the outcome of the 2007 poll, died from the wounds he sustained in the gun attack.

“Dipo Dina is dead, his corpse is at the hospital in Ota,” the aide, who asked not to be named, said.

At 11.55pm, the Ogun State Police Command‘s spokesman, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said that he had called the area commander in charge of Ota several times but that his calls were not answered.

Adejobi said he had received calls from friends and associates of the politician seeking for confirmation of the incident. He, however, refused to comment further.

However, National Publicity Secretary of the AC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said whether assassination or robbery, the latest killing had shown the level of insecurity in the country.

He said, “Given the political battles he has fought in the last two years, it makes all politicians feel unsafe. And going by the records of such killings, such killers are never found.”

Our correspondents also gathered that the assailants crossed his car, a sports utility vehicle, in front of the Convenant university and attempted to take him away but were resisted by the people around. It was in the process the attackers rained bullets on him.

A police source disclosed that Dina’s vehicle was driven away by the killers after the attack.

Wisdom teaches you to think clearly, education teaches you what you've been tought, good or bad

A person who has Wisdom will never be influenced, educated one's are easily influenced and whitewashed because all their references are based on books they've read.

You guys are killing each other because ya'll think your clever, you think you know more than each other, therefor you're better than them. You all have bigman mentality, you all want to Presidents,no one want to be deputy.
I compare Nigerians to having 140 million queen bees,do you think nector or honey will be produced if they all live together?
People Grow up angry

True talk. We have issues man! The worst part is that the people doing all this killings are hypocrites. You can always see its not that religion is what they stand for; but just a comfortable context to exhibit their deteriorated thinking.

What causes this sort of thinking; poverty! When you are so lost in the thought of how to survive, you would definitely start to tip over mentally.
What causes poverty, the fact that everyone wants to be the bigman at the expense of the rest, and thats where I agree with u RSA boy.

Rubbish law! The only way government is able to control these markets is by providing enough public housing to reduce the pressure private tenancy, the market would start to decline slowly, and the terms would fall into place. Too many homeless people for a law to fix the problem.

Problem: The economic distance is so much that only 20% of the population account for 80% of the wealth; how do people build their own houses? How do they get mortgages?

Answer: Take from the rich and give to the poor. Enact laws that would see good taxation on property transactions. For example, any property above 75 million would pay a 15% tax on transaction of sale + annual property tax. Take this money and earmark it SOLELY for public housing, make it more affordable and the societal strata would start to come closer together.

Guys, as much we are hurt about this, we should be objective; I would do same thing as MTN CEO!

The law of business says 'only take risks you can manage'.

Is it wise for MTN to allow regional operations feed into a country where the social environment is run down n almost in decay; where the people who make the laws are bought off with blackberry bolds + unlimited data?

Considering the spate with which we change policies depending on what winds are blowing from which nautical zone of the earth, you would want an adverse policy change to affect nine operational units because they want to satisfy nigerians?

Every wise business man would manage the risks of being in nigeria in isolation to the rest of its business!

Moral of the story - GET YOUR LEADERSHIP TOGETHER!

LOL, nice one sweetpain

The kind of views we get on nairaland just indicates how far away we are from the 'one nigeria' that gets pushed around every now and then.

Can anyone of you think back to the Abacha era, when phoney banks would open, collect money from people and 3 months later, no one can find them? If you ever lost money to one of those, you would know what it is like.

The problem with Nigeria has always been that banks failed and nothing happened; CEOs and debtors walked off richer, but the salary earners like us suffered.

The only reason I have my money in any bank today is because the government has told us that these guys have met the requirements to do just that and my money is SAFE! Now the same government expresses concerns about how fine they are doing and takes action, then I start to bicker about how they built it from scratch??

Maybe we need a nigerian Madoff to set some heads straight, I just cant believe what I read here!!!
