Crime / Mother Kills Baby After Giving Him Heroin Overdose So She Could Take Cocaine In by abouyusuf: 4:15pm On Feb 27, 2015
A mother who is a drug addict gave her baby concentrated heroin to 'knock him out or make him sleep' so she could take crack cocaine 'in peace', a court has heard.

Kelly Emery, 34, was charged with manslaughter after her son Fenton Hogan died of a heroine overdose.

Emery denies giving the two-year-old the heroin substitute to make him sleep and is currently on trial at Nottingham Crown Court but the baby's grandmother Angela Emery, Kelly Emery's mother, told the court her daughter 'cared more about drugs than her children

When she was asked how her daughter funded her habit in the months before Fenton's death, Mrs Emery said: 'Selling herself, basically.

'She would phone [me] regularly for money - she would claim it was for gas, electricity or food.'

Mrs Emery said her daughter had been addicted to drugs since the age of 17.

She said it was clear from her daughter's home and her appearance that she was an addict.

Mrs Emery told the court the house was mess and her daughter was 'not bothered' about housework or ensuring the children had clean clothes.

A post-mortem examination revealed Fenton had ingested methadone at least twice before his death

Emery has pleaded guilty to causing Fenton's death by gross negligence but denies charges of manslaughter and cruelty.

Christopher Hotten QC, prosecuting, alleged Emery deliberately gave the toddler concentrated heroine in order to 'knock him out' so she could take crack cocaine in peace.

The trial continues.

Politics / 100 Boko Haram Fighters Killed By Chadian Troops by abouyusuf: 7:41am On Feb 26, 2015
Soldiers from Chad killed 207 Boko Haram fighters in clashes near a Nigerian town close to the border with Cameroon, Chad’s army announced in a statement.

One Chadian soldier was killed and another nine were wounded in Gambaru, the scene of regular attacks by the group in recent months. There was no immediate independent verification of the Chadian army’s announcement, reports a news agency.

Chad’s military also claimed to have seized large quantities of small arms and ammunition and two pick-up trucks on Tuesday.

Niger, Cameroon and Chad have launched a regional military campaign to help Nigeria defeat the Boko Haram insurgency, which aims to carve an Islamic emirate out of northeastern Nigeria.

Chad deployed troops last month in support of Cameroonian efforts to stop repeated cross-border raids by the fighters, whose operations increasingly threaten Nigeria’s neighbours.

The African Union last month authorised the creation of the regional force, which will also include Benin, and is pushing for a United Nations Security Council mandate for the operation. READ MORE

In our society today, nudity has eaten deep into the roots of black heritage and culture. Public display of the female body parts is now applauded and accepted as a norm by society itself. The objectification and hyper sexualized images of women displayed by the entertainment media, is now a marketing strategy for driving business goals. The likes of Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian , Halle Berry, Beyoncé to mention a few have made names for themselves through talent, dedication and hard work.

Politics / ''peaceful Election Is Our Future, Lets Secure It'' (FCF) by abouyusuf: 4:10pm On Feb 24, 2015
The Funtua Consultative Forum wrote:

The post election violence raises a lot of concern about the breach of peace and loss of lives and property. Specifically in the last seven years, Funtua has experience 2 post election violence; one in the year 2007 and the other in 2011. The persistent violence has generated much concern about the need for peaceful co-existence and mutual trust among various groups in our community.

Now that the tension is building up ion the country ahead of 2015 general elections, this tension has got to a level where every right thinking Nigerian ought to be concerned, with just 6 weeks to the general elections, some politicians are inadvertently heightening the political tension in the country and creating room for possible post-election violence.
http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/24/peaceful-elect…ets-secure-fcf/

The time has come for Nigerians to embrace peace as protects against harm, creates a secure environment, enhance human development, fosters healthy families, helps children to live fruitful lives, increases faith and hope, increase wealth and brings prosperity to nations, recognizes all humans as equals.
http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/24/peaceful-elect…ets-secure-fcf/
ADMONITION

All religions have identified that violence of whatever nature is totally unacceptable. Islam considers diversity in the tribes, colors, ethnicity, religious affiliations, etc of humans as wish of Allah and not as accident and that the wish is for the purpose of difference and understanding rather than superiority or otherwise. If humans are of different races, tribes, backgrounds, characters as well as beliefs,it is the singular wish of Allah to make them so different; if He had wanted, He would have made humans all of them the same; yet, they will still conflict.

The unfortunate events that engulfed many states in the country after the 2011 general elections are still fresh in the minds of Nigerians; especially the victims who have done nothing wrong.
http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/24/peaceful-elect…ets-secure-fcf/
The question is who is benefiting from the violence? It is the masses or the leaders? Naturally the answer should be no. Because if one looks at the huge amount been paid to the victims of the violence one can deduce that such amount can be utilizes for developing critical areas of the economy such as education, infrastructure, health, agriculture etc.

For election violence to be over and democracy to succeed in Nigeria, all politicians must embrace peace, tolerances, social justice, strict adherence to the rule of law, promotes mutual co-existence and provide jobs for the unemployed. They should endeavor to provide education to all deserving citizens, enlighten the electorates, and work for the conduct of free and credible elections and show love for less privilege.

Nairaland / General / An Unemployed Mexican Man Faked His Own Abduction Just So He Could Extort $450 by abouyusuf: 1:13pm On Feb 19, 2015
An unemployed Mexican man faked his own abduction just so he could extort $450 ransom money from his wife, who is a banker.

The man, Eliot Garrido Guido, 36, from Mexico City, set up the devious plan with his friend Carlos Amilcar Martinez Reyes, 42, Daily Mail reports.

Mexican authorities state that Guido was jealous and embarrassed by the fact that his wife earned more money than him.

Reyes took Guido to an abandoned house, tied him up, sat him on a stool, and sprinkled fake blood on his shirt. He then took photographs of him, which he posted on Guido’s Facebook page.

They then sent a message to Guido’s wife, stating that her husband was 900 miles away and being tortured. They also instructed her to pay $450 as ransom, or else Guido would be killed.

“I was seriously worried but when I contacted them they said I should leave the money at an address in Mexico City. I asked them why I should do that if they were in Playa del Carmen, and they just said do it. But it didn’t make sense so I contacted the police,” said his wife.

The police examined the message and discovered that it had been sent from a nearby location, and not 900 miles away.

“We found them in a house about 300 metres away. They both confessed and were arrested on the spot,” said a police spokesman.

The men are currently facing a five-year jail sentence

Politics / You Are Not God, Jonathan Campaigners Tell Obasanjo by abouyusuf: 11:53am On Feb 16, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation has told former President Olusegun Obasanjo to stop playing God over his numerous criticisms of President Goodluck Jonathan.

http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/16/not-god-jonath…-tell-obasanjo/ ‎
http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/16/not-god-jonath…-tell-obasanjo/ ‎
The organsiation was reacting to the claim by Obasanjo that President Jonathan was planning to perpetuate himself in office.

Apart from this, the former President also accused Jonathan of planning to cause chaos if he lost the March 28 presidential election.

But the Director of Media and Publicity of the organsiation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, debunked the allegations, saying the former President under whom he served as Minister of Aviation and Special Assistant on Public Communication, was trying to play God.

Fani-Kayode, who spoke at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, accused his former boss of trying in vain to control President Jonathan.

He said the problem between the two members of the ruling party had nothing to do with Nigeria, and called on the former President to leave Nigeria out of the issues between him and the President.

He said, “The bottom line is this: President Obasanjo’s grouse with President Jonathan is personal and it has nothing to do with Nigeria.

“He should leave Nigeria out of it and let us all be. If he has a personal score to settle with Jonathan he should not do so at the expense of the peace and stability of Nigeria.

“If he wants to stop Jonathan then let him attempt to do so through the democratic process and through the ballot box and not through foul and unconstitutional means.

“We said it before and we will say it again: gone are the days that any President can be tele-guided and controlled because we have all come of age.

“We continue to hold President Obasanjo in high esteem but his recent actions and utterances are beyond the pale. He has been unfair to Jonathan, to Nigeria and even to himself.

“Most importantly the days of intimidating others with his harsh words and overbearing influence are long over. Obasanjo is not God.

“Only God is God and He alone determines the fortunes of men and the destiny of nations.”

Fani-Kayode said that after Jonathan came to power, Obasanjo did not only try to control and tele-guide the President, but he also asked him to do a number of things that he said were simply wrong and unacceptable.

Asked to tell Nigerians those issues, he refused. He merely said that the President would speak on the matter anytime he likes.

Politics / Borno Declares Today Public Holiday For Buhari by abouyusuf: 11:39am On Feb 16, 2015
The Borno State government has declared Monday (today) a work-free-day for the visit of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to the state.

http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/16/borno-declares…holiday-buhari/

Secretary to the state government, Alhaji Ahmed Jidda, announced this on Sunday in a statement in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Jidda said that the public holiday would enable residents of the state to receive Buhari during his campaign rally.

The statement read, “The Borno State Government has declared Monday as a work-free day. The declaration is to enable the people of the state welcome the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who will arrive Maiduguri on a campaign visit on Monday.

“Governor Kashim Shettima has enjoined all Borno residents to come out en mass and line up the streets to welcome the Peoples’ General.”

Meanwhile, the National Christian Elders Forum on Sunday dissociated itself from the purported endorsement of Buhari by the Northern Christian Leaders Eagle-Eye Forum, led by one Pastor Aminchi Habu.

The Secretary of NCEF, Pastor ‘Bosun Emmanuel, in a statement issued in Abuja, advised Christians “to resist the temptation of putting personal interests above the interests of the Lord Jesus Christ, because such compromise has terrible eternal consequences.”

Emmanuel also called on politicians “to put the interest of the nation first in all forms of electioneering campaign and desist from acts that could be interpreted to imply desperate manipulation of the electorate for political power.”

His statement partly read, “It has come to the notice of the NCEF that an unaccredited group, claiming Northern Christians Leaders Eagle Eye-Forum, purportedly on Thursday February 12, 2015, in Abuja, adopted the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming elections, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

“The National Christian Elders Forum wishes to state clearly that the only Northern Elders Forum accredited and recognised by the Christians Association of Nigeria is the Northern States Christian Elders Forum.

“The Elders Forum hereby declares that neither CAN, NOSCEF nor the NCEF at any time supported or approved of the action of this unaccredited group. The National Christian Elders Forum wishes to admonish Christian leaders in Nigeria to resist the temptation of putting personal interests above the interests of the Lord Jesus Christ, because such compromise has terrible eternal consequences.

“The Elders Forum also advises politicians to put the interest of the nation first in all forms of electioneering campaign and desist from acts that could be interpreted to imply desperate manipulation of the electorate for political power.”

Politics / Obasanjo Backs Buhari Over Certificate by abouyusuf: 8:18am On Feb 14, 2015
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that at the time General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) joined the military, nobody in the Nigerian Army could have been admitted without a qualification equivalent to a school certificate.

Obasanjo was fielding questions during an event to promote his book ‘My Watch’ in London during the week, when he revealed that Buhari joined the military four years after him.

In a video of the event on Youtube, transcribed by our correspondent, he said, “When I joined the Army in the 1950s, I needed to have a Cambridge certificate or West African School Certificate or GCE with a minimum of six subjects to be able to join the military at the time.

“I don’t know of anybody who was an officer at that time that did not have similar certificates.

“Buhari joined the Army about four years after me and if I needed such a certificate to be admitted into the Army, I don’t know how he could have avoided it.

“Assuming he was able to avoid that certificate, Buhari went through a military academy, and went through what you call a staff college which would be the equivalent of a first degree. He went through what you call a war college in America where he would have got an equivalent of a master’s degree.

“Our constitution or electoral law requires a school certificate (to become President). Rather than campaign and debate on real issues, we then degenerated to trivialities.”

Obasanjo explained that during his school days, he had a record that was unrivalled, adding that if anybody were to challenge his education, “I will say, read my book (My Watch).”
http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/14/obasanjo-backs…er-certificate/

He explained that Nigeria’s unification achievement after the country’s civil war had not been matched by any other nation.

Obasanjo said, “Nigeria fought a civil war for three years, and we concluded that war by uniting our country. The slogan was ‘No victor, no vanquished.’

“Within ten years of the end of that war, Alex Ekwueme, who was on the side of Biafra, became the vice president after an election in Nigeria. No country has achieved such a feat. I think we deserve applause.”

Politics / EFCC Arrests Nyako’s Son For Alleged Corruption by abouyusuf: 7:50am On Feb 14, 2015
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested Abdul-Aziz Nyako, the son of impeached Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako.

The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in an electronic mail on Friday that Abdul-Aziz was picked up by EFCC operatives in Gombe.

Uwujaren said that the former Governor’s son was immediately flown to Abuja ‘where he is currently being grilled by a crack team of detectives who had been working on the Adamawa investigation for several months.’

The EFCC had declared Nyako and his son wanted for money laundering-related offences two weeks ago.

Uwujaren said that Abdul-Aziz was being grilled in relation with how N15bn belonging to the Adamawa State Government was laundered through five accounts of companies belonging to him.

The said companies under investigation are Blue Opal Nigeria limited, Crust Energy Nigeria Limited, Blue Ribbon Multilinks Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Blue Ribbon Bureau De Change.

The EFCC Spokesman said that the money was moved into the accounts of the companies domiciled in a new generation account with the help of the manager who is also an in-law to Nyako.

It was stated that the Accounts Officer was quizzed and released on bail.

He said that one of Abdul-Aziz companies, the Blue Opal, is believed to own several investments and an estate in Abuja while his father’s accounts Office own “several properties and investments scattered around Abuja, Yola and Kano.”

Politics / Jonathan Promises To Rebuild Chibok School by abouyusuf: 8:21am On Feb 13, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan has given approval for the rebuilding of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.

Jonathan spoke through the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Thursday when she visited the Chibok community in Kuje, Abuja, as part of the outreach for the Safe Schools Initiative to provide education to children who are out of school as a result of the insurgency particularly in the North-eastern part of the country.
The school was badly damaged last April when Boko Haram launched an attack that led to the abduction of more than 200 students of the school.

The president reassured anxious parents and children of the current administration’s determination to rescue the abducted Chibok girls and quickly address the insurgency in the North-east in order to safely return displaced persons to their communities.

Okonjo-Iweala, who was accompanied by the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Muhammad Sani Sidi, to the 30 villages in Kuje, Abuja, where the displaced Chibok community are currently located, also assured them that government would accommodate about 44 students currently among the displaced persons in Chibok community Kuje in a list of 2,400 students, who would soon be transferred to other unity schools to continue their education.

She also ordered an immediate medical attention and immunisation of the children as well as necessary supplies to cater for the people.

The minister said the visit had become necessary in order to ascertain the condition of the Chibok community with a view to providing them with government assistance until they are able to return to their communities.

The leader of the Abuja Chibok community, Mr. Gapani Yanga, had earlier commended the federal government’s current effort to end insurgency in the North-east, adding that they would like to see efforts doubled to free the abducted students from captivity.

Besides, he said the Chibok people needed education, accommodation, medical supplies and food.

“We appreciate current government efforts through the military to end the insurgency to enable us return to our villages,” he said.

They also want the federal government to set up an independent judicial enquiry to probe the circumstance beyond the abduction of the Chibok girls, “because there had been suspicion about the circumstance leading to the incident.”

He said government should also provide social amenities, like water, medical care and good roads in the post insurgency in the North-east.

Nevertheless, the minister said: “We are please to come and be with you; once we heard about the community here, which we only got some few weeks ago...we mobilised to come and see what was happening.”

“We sent the NGO, Sopwa, which is supported by the Safe Schools Initiative. Mr. President said that we should mobilise Nigerians who can help other Nigerians through counseling and support and we should use the safe school initiative to do it and we did.

According to her: “We sent these counselors’ to come and interact with you because I know that you are traumatised being away from home and being out of your communities is a very difficult thing. So that’s the first thing that we’ve tried to do as a federal government.

“As you already noted that there’s a big push in the north-east to try and deal with Boko Haram so that you can go back. I know that the biggest thing for you is how to get back to your communities.

“So we are trying to do that. The whole idea is not to build you camps in different places but to try quickly to get you to move back to your communities. That’s what Mr president is trying to do- to get them (Boko Haram) to move back by doing this push with the other countries.

“Mr. President has promised publicly to have the Government Secondary School, Chibok rebuilt. The plans are ready and we are working with the army corps of engineers and I am sure that in no distant future by God’s grace we would be able to quickly start work on that school. It is already approved and we are just waiting for the right circumstances.

“As we speak, we are in the middle of transferring 2,400 children from the three north-eastern states; their parents came to the federal government and said we want our children to be transferred to other unity schools in other parts of the country and they signed that this is what they want.

“So we are transferring 2,400 children. We are working with donors who are also supporting with us like the British, Americans, Norwegians, World Bank, and African Development Bank- all of them are involved.

“So we would add the names here to that list. If they want their schools close by here we would do it and if they want to be in secondary schools or boarding schools elsewhere-whatever their parents agree, we would do it.”

She said: “It is our biggest wish to see the Chibok girls brought back to the community. We would try to arrange for the immunisation of the children and also provide needed supplies. We would be able to work with you until we can safely take you back to Chibok. We are interested in the children, whether they are coping and in school or not.”

“President Goodluck Jonathan is even anxious that even the IDPs, which moved that the Children should not be left without trying to help them have some kind of learning and supporting them to be in school and that’s why we came.

“The president started the Safe Schools Initiative to help the children. It is a nationwide programme, but we are starting with the north-east because that’s where the biggest problem lies. And the idea is to help the children there to be safe in school. But we also found many people have moved into IDP camps.

Politics / Female Bomber Kills 15 In Borno by abouyusuf: 3:52am On Feb 13, 2015
A Boko Haram female suicide bomber has killed 15 people and injuring 15 in Biu, Borno Sate. This is even as the Federal Government said yesterday that the Islamist sect is recruiting more fighters.

Witnesses said the lady had strolled into the Biu market at about 3.15pm yesterday and headed to a section where vegetables are sold. “She walked down to where vegetables are sold and then started buying some soap ingredients near the vegetable section of the market at about 3:15 pm,” Usman Adamu, who was in the market told Daily Sun.

He said little did others around her know that she was a suicide bomber until a loud sound, causing death and destruction. He said many scampered for safety as the blast wreaked havoc in the market.

A security source said some angry youths almost caused more confusion in their reactions to the incident as they stormed the area, destroying flags, posters and bill-boards of a political party. The source said the combined team of soldiers and policemen in the town have put “everything under control,” saying normalcy has returned to Biu as at press time.

Hospital sources said 15 bodies were brought to the hospital, adding that 20 injured persons are already receiving treatment.

Biu, about 185 kilometres, south of Maiduguri, the state capital, has witnessed relative peace until early January when Boko Haram, in a convoy of about 14 vehicles, invaded the town. However, troops and some youth vigilante foiled the attack.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government said yesterday that Boko Haram has commenced recruitment and training of more fighters, in a desperate move to counter the military’s onslaught.

According to the government, intelligence report has shown that the insurgents are recruiting innocent villagers from the North-East and using places, like Mairi and Dupcha (all in Borno State) as training camps to induct the new recruits.

It has therefore, called on residents of these areas and indeed, the general public to exercise vigilance and continue to support the effort of the military to ensure hitch-free elections and a return to normalcy in the shortest possible time.

Coordinator of the National Information Centre (NIC), on the war against insurgency, Mr. Mike Omeri, who made the revelation at a press briefing in Abuja, said: “In the general effort to contain acts of insurgency in the North-East and secure the entire area for the forthcoming general elections, the centre wishes to alert the general public on very recent intelligence reports, which indicated a considerable movement of Boko Haram recruits from such locations as Geidam, Mairi and Dupcha (all in Borno State) to training camps within the general area.”

Politics / The Truth:i’ve Not Endorsed Any Presidential Candidate –obasanjo by abouyusuf: 3:13am On Feb 13, 2015
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday denied reports that he has endorsed the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

Obasanjo made the clarification during the launch of his 1,500-page autobiography, ‘My Watch’ in London, three days after local media reported he had endorsed Buhari during an interview with London-based Financial Times in Nairobi, the Kenya capital. Interestingly, the occasion was also the launch of the same book, ‘My Watch.’

The report drew the ire of notable Peoples Democratic Party chieftains who did not hesitate to lampoon the ex-president who is also a chieftain of the party. In the interview with the Financial Times, Obasanjo was quoted as saying: “The circumstances (Buhari) will be working under if he wins the election are different from the one he worked under before, where he was both the executive and the legislature he knows that,” said Gen Obasanjo. “He’s smart enough. He’s educated enough. He’s experienced enough. Why shouldn’t I support him?”

But yesterday in London, Obasanjo may have surprised his audience when he announced that he was yet to decide on which presidential candidate to endorse, this even as he, again, criticized the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Financial Times had said: This is the first time Gen Obasanjo has come out openly to support Gen Buhari.” But yesterday, Obasanjo denied the statement, saying: “I didn’t endorse or unendorse him as such.

“What I said and I will say it again and I will do it: when the time comes for me to vote, I will consider the track record of all the candidates that are contesting and I will assess and based on my assessment, whoever I believe has the best track record to perform the job of the Nigerian president will have my vote.

“If anybody should know what the job of the Nigerian president requires, I should know. Nigeria has a population of 180 million and you wouldn’t have anybody other than one person or two persons that can run the affairs of Nigeria.

“There are millions who can run the affairs of Nigeria who are not even coming out. So why should you die on behalf of one who is probably performing as a mediocre? What the hell are we talking about? “If you love Nigeria, you would look for the best for Nigeria and I don’t believe that at this point in time we have the best for Nigeria.”

But even as he denies endorsing Buhari, he may have tactically defended the APC presidential candidate, regarding the certificate scandal he (Buhari) is facing.

According to reports, Obasanjo had bitter words for those questioning the academic qualification of Buhari. He wondered why some people should question the academic qualification of a retired army General who had passed through the Nigerian Army’s staff college, which is the equivalent of a first degree and also attended the US War College, which is equivalent to a master’s degree.

Obasanjo insists that it does not matter if Buhari does not have O’Level certificate.

“If anybody thinks that I’m illiterate or uneducated after attending many military institutions in the UK, India and the US, they should read my books. I would also urge those engaged in Buhari’s qualification debacle to focus on real issues and stop degenerating into trivialities,” he said.

On the fate of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls, Obasanjo insists that the Federal Government failed in its responsibility to rescue the girls just as he said he had no regret not allowing his ex-Vice President Abubakar Atiku to succeed him.

Even with the mirage of problems he says Nigeria is currently facing, the former president is hopeful that Nigeria will emerge victorious and stronger. “God will see Nigeria through and Nigeria will emerge successfully and move up and forward. I am not heating anything. When things are going bad and you can’t say anything, you are an accomplice. If anybody can prove that what I am saying is wrong, I will apologise,” he said.

Politics / Christian Group Endorses Buhari, Gives Him Bible by abouyusuf: 2:21am On Feb 13, 2015
The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) was on Thursday in Abuja endorsed by a group of Christians from the northern states for the March 28 poll.

The Christians, under the aegis of the Northern Christian Leaders Eagle-Eye Forum, led by Pastor Aminchi Habu, during the endorsement, presented Buhari with a copy of the Holy Bible.

In an interview shortly after, Buhari said, “This is not the first time I am accepting Holy Bible publicly; this is not the first time. It is not even the second or third time. All these problems people are making because of religion are just of recent time and dimension. We, both Christians and Muslims, have been leading this country and there was no religious problem.

“It is just now that somebody is creating these problems for us. I hope God will look after it. I told you this is not the second or third time I will be accepting Bible. This one (acceptance) is special because of the leadership of the church that made the presentation, that is the only difference. Otherwise, I do receive Bibles, they are in my libraries.”

He promised Nigerians that if given the opportunity to serve the country again he would not promote the religious agenda of anyone.

Buhari, who used the opportunity to clear the air on some of the allegations against him on religious matter, told the gathering that though a practising Muslim, he never belonged nor shared the views of any extremist group.

He said, “Let me state this categorically, that I, Muhammadu Buhari, as an individual, and as president of this great country by the grace of God, given the opportunity to serve, have no personal religious agenda. And I will not entertain, consider or promote the religious agenda of anyone. I will not condone any initiative that seeks to promote one religion over the other. Neither I, nor my party, or any member of my team has any desire or plan to Islamise or Christianise Nigeria or support anyone with such intention.

“Although I am a practising Muslim and I have been so all my life but I have never belonged to, nor shared the views of, any extremist group. I am not even a cleric. I believe that religion is personal and private.”

Politics / Jonathan Must Take Lagos-west Seriously —adewale by abouyusuf: 2:07am On Feb 13, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party senatorial candidate for Lagos-West, Mr. Segun Adewale, says President Goodluck Jonathan’s victory in the South-West will be determined largely by the Lagos-West senatorial district which is the most populous senatorial district in Nigeria.

He said out of the 20 local government areas in Lagos State, 10 local governments fall under Lagos-West.

He, therefore, urged the President to ensure that Lagos-West is given special attention, especially in the area of mobilisation.

Adewale, who is popularly known as Aeroland, said this during an interview with journalists on Thursday.

He said, “Right now, I am talking to the leaders of my party and trying to get support because if we lose Lagos-West senatorial district, we will lose Lagos. This can affect the entire result of the President because he is not only required to win but he must win with two-thirds in every geopolitical zone.”

Adewale further lamented that many PDP supporters, especially non-indigenes, were not getting their Permanent Voter Cards.

He said the PDP was banking on Igbo communities in Lagos for a large number of votes but unfortunately they were not given their PVCs.

He, therefore, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to put its act together.

He said, “Everyone is complaining about being unable to get PVCs except the All Progressives Congress. This means they are the ones frustrating it in conjunction with INEC. As it stands, I don’t even have a PVC. A lot of people that want to vote for me cannot get their PVCs.

“This means I can’t even vote for myself. From Amuwo Odofin to Ojo and Ajeromi/Ifelodun local governments, where the non-indigenes are expected to vote for me and the President, people find it difficult to get their PVCs.”

The senatorial candidate urged the national leadership to intervene in the matter and provide direct funds to him to defeat his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Solomon Adeola.

However, Lagos INEC in a statement by its Head, Public Affairs, Femi Akinbiyi, denied attempting to disenfranchise voters.

The statement read, “The records we have at our disposal, which are available for all to see, indicate that Lagosians of different ethnic backgrounds have been coming forward to collect their cards.

“To be sure, the bulk of the ad hoc workers are members of the National Youth Service Corps who come from different ethnic backgrounds. With such diverse backgrounds among whom a substantial number of them are non-indigenes, it is most unlikely that they would embark on discriminating against non-indigenes like themselves.”

The electoral body, however, revealed that two INEC ad hoc employees had been fired for denying two non-indigenes of their PVCs.

Politics / Jonathan’s Campaigners Knock Obasanjo For Endorsing Buhari by abouyusuf: 2:04am On Feb 12, 2015
The Campaign Organisation of President Goodluck Jonathan has described the endorsement of the Presidential candidate of the rival All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as unfortunate.

It nevertheless said that the former President should know that he has only one vote.

The campaign organisation was reacting to the endorsement of Buhari by the former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ruling party in Kenya on Tuesday.

Speaking on Buhari, Obasanjo said the former Head of State was aware of the challenges of Nigeria and was qualified to rule the country again.

He said that he had confidence that Buhari would be able to tackle corruption and insecurity effectively if elected

The open endorsement of Buhari by Obasanjo was at the detriment of Jonathan, and the ruling party and Presidency was said to have been jolted by this action.

Though the former President has never hidden his disdain for President Jonathan because of his alleged ineffective leadership, it was gathered that the Presidency was of the opinion that Obasanjo would not openly speak on the issue.

However, the Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, said in Abuja on Wednesday that Obasanjo was entitled to his opinion.

He said, “I have to confess to you, I have not read what President Obasanjo said. I have just been told and I haven’t read the text.

“As far as I am concerned, President Obasanjo is entitled to his opinion, he is a respected member of our society, and we have immense respect for him. This election is about one man, one vote and we should restrict our choices and decisions to ourselves.

“I believe it will be a very sad day indeed, if going by what we all know about Gen. Buhari and what Gen. Obasanjo knows about Gen. Buhari that he will still go out of his way to endorse him for anything; I will be very surprised.

“But we will meet them all at the polls, we would meet in the field and by the grace of God, at the end of it all those that have endorsed Buhari, of course they know that President Goodluck Jonathan has come of age and Nigerians will make their choice and we shall win.”

On the laying of siege to the residence of a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, by soldiers, Fani-Kayode said it was not true.

He alleged that the APC and the former governor were lying about the issue, adding that as of the time he said photographs were taken in front of the residence, there were no soldiers there.

Rather, he said that a detachment of policemen were there at the expense of the state government and that the policemen were stationed there to provide security for the former governor.

He said, “It is a perilous lie. This party and government will never do that. Why would the government do that?

“How would that profit the government and the party? It is a sorry time for the members of the opposition for claiming this. I think Asiwaju Tinubu should provide the evidence of the soldiers’ presence with photographs.”

Nairaland / General / Woman Commits Suicide After Finding Herself Unmarried & Childless By Age 30 by abouyusuf: 7:45pm On Feb 11, 2015
A few days before her 30th birthday, Rachel Gow (pictured above) killed herself at home by drinking poison after she struggled with the fact she was unmarried and had no children by the age of 30.

Unbelievable story! UK Telegraph reports;

Hospital administrator Rachel Gow, 29, had wanted to walk up the aisle and have a family of her own but became "troubled" that she achieved neither. As her 30th birthday approached the self confessed "dizzy blonde" she said felt other members of her family were "doing better than her."

Fearing her boyfriend Anton Tsvarev, 30 would leave her, Miss Gow sent him a test message wishing him "all the best for the future" before poisoning herself at her home. Mr Tsvarev who had been visiting a friend later found Miss Gow but she died despite attempts by him to revive her.

An inquest was told Miss Gow, from Haslingden, Lancashire, had been an "outgoing, adventurous and loving" young woman who had attained a 2:1 in History from Lancaster University before working at Royal Bolton Hospital.

In a statement read to the Burnley hearing Rachel's brother Stephen Best and her sister Sarah Davidson said: "Rachel had been a happy child who had lots of friends, she loved to dance and play the violin.

"She was very close to her sister Sarah She was very academic and following A levels she studied at Lancaster University. She also made people laugh. She was proud to be at Lancaster and also a dizzy blonde."

The statement added: "She had three breakups before her relationship with Anton. Her greatest wish was to settle down and get married."

But Miss Gow's problems began in 2011 after her mother Connie a primary school teacher died from cancer aged 66 in 2011.

She took the death "very hard" but later Miss Gow's family and friends thought she was improving and she met Mr Tsvarev in May 2012 and he moved in with her during 2013. She also got her job at the hospital.

The statement said: "Following the death of her mother Rachel had a period of independence. She met Anton and they were both extremely happy. He moved in. They had lots in common.
"She did have three breakups before her relationship with Anton and her greatest wish was to settle down, start a relationship and get married.

"But she could not overcome her previous sadness and felt Anton would leave her. She was looking forward to turning 30, planning trips to Italy with Anton and going to go Vegas for her birthday, she was saving money every month. But the relationship became unstable and they tried to make it work.
Mr Tsvarev an engineer told the hearing: "Our relationship had a lot of ups and downs due to her insecurities. This would cause a lot of problems. She constantly felt I was going to leave her but this was not the case."

Miss Gow who was due to celebrate her 30th birthday in January this year went to see a psychologist in September 2014 and Mr Tsvarev added: "There had been nothing significant at the time except the anniversary of her mother's death also along with her 30th birthday and mine.

"These were all things that troubled her. She felt she was not where she should be in life."
He said she felt that she should be married with children and that her siblings were doing better than her and said: "This was something she struggled with.

"Rachel had spoken to me about the fact she had researched suicide techniques. 'I was not sure how serious she was about it because she always said things in the heat of the moment."
The day before Rachel was found last November 1, the couple went to her father's house to look after his dog while he was away. But in the morning, the couple had an argument over a text message Miss Gow had found on Mr Tsvarev's phone from someone else.

He said: "In the morning we both got up. I had my phone on charge in the bed room. She looked at it. She came into the living room very upset telling me to leave. She had found texts on my phone from someone. They were not out of the ordinary. She didn't see it that way."
Later that the day couple drove home to their house in Haslingden and Anton went out to visit a friend in Preston.

He said: "She was still upset when we arrived home. She was very agitated. This was not a new thing. I left the house at 13pm after picking some clothes as I decided to stay somewhere else for a while. I went to Preston to visit a friend."

He added: "I got a text from her wishing me the best for the future. It was common place after an argument so I didn't think anything of it."

However Mr Tsvarev "had a really bad feeling" so he decided to go back to Haslingden to see if everything was alright.

He said: "I went into the lounge. The lights were off but the fire was on. I could see her lying on the floor."
The inquest was told that Anton performed CPR on Rachel until emergency services arrived just before 9pm, but Miss Gow was pronounced dead.

Tests showed Miss Gow had died from hypoxia as a result of helium inhalation.
Recording a verdict of suicide, Coroner Richard Taylor said: "We have a girl who is severely troubles by a number of aspects of her life. As I understand it she was having a slightly more positive year because of new employment.

"But she clearly had difficulties and at some stage she purchased the items with which she took her own life. It appears from her actions she did that with intent to end her life."

In a statement Mr Tsvarev said: "Everyone is devastated by Rachel's death. It's a tragic loss for everyone, I'm absolutely heartbroken. Being around her was so easy, we enjoyed all the same things and we loved going walking together in the Lake District.

"Rachel did a lot of travelling all over the world and she was very adventurous and loved life.
"She was a fantastic person who inspired everyone around her. She was still grieving for her mum - they were very close. She really did miss her mum, she always spoke very highly of her."

Miss Gow's brother brother Stephen Best added: "Through all of our grief and sadness, it is essential that we remind ourselves of why we all loved her. Rachel was effervescent, full of fun and laughter, and could tell a brilliant joke.

Sister Sarah Davidson said: "She was very popular and made friends easily. She was a kind and generous person who made other people feel at ease. She was a treasured sister and was wonderful with children."

Politics / Election Postponement: Nigeria Will No Longer Tolerate Excesses Of Envoys - Wali by abouyusuf: 7:35pm On Feb 11, 2015
The Federal Government has responded to what it said are judgemental and unwarranted comments from several countries expressing their disappointment at the postponement of the 2015 general elections, saying Nigeria does not need to be hectored or lectured.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, speaking at an interactive session with the diplomatic community in Abuja Wednesday, cautioned heads of foreign missions against making unguarded utterances on the conduct of Nigeria's internal affair, saying the government would no longer tolerate their excesses.

The United States, United Kingdom, Canada and European Union have all raised concerns at the postponement, with some saying the security situation cited as an excuse for the delay is not enough reason.

"No country, no matter how well intentioned, can love Nigeria more than Nigerians themselves," Wali said and expressed strong displeasure at the conduct of some head of missions who he said have continued to behave in an imperial manner and in clear breach of the channel of diplomatic communication.”

http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/11/election-postp…es-envoys-wali/ ‎

"It is only in this country that I have noticed some Envoys who have taken it upon themselves and without recourse to the Government , to embark on social causes and political advocacy that are totally unrelated to conventional diplomacy and representational duties of Ambassadors. Certainly, Nigerian Envoys abroad do not behave in this manner, " he said.

Wali continued, "It is therefore unacceptable for Envoys to abuse their privileges and immunities by behaving in a manner that would have been met with opprobrium in their countries were Nigerian Ambassadors to behave in like manner. Let me be clear, the Federal Government will no longer tolerate the excesses of such Heads of Mission."

Politics / Ojudu: Mark Asked Senators To Support Election Deferment by abouyusuf: 7:05pm On Feb 11, 2015
The lawmaker representing the Ekiti Central senatorial district, Sen. Babafemi Ojudu, Wednesday disclosed that the Senate President, Senator David Mark had been asking his colleague senators to support the deferment of 2015 elections, citing the worsening insurgent campaign in the north-east.

However, Ojudu said the senate president quickly reversed himself when the senators took him up at a meeting after last summer recess, saying the plan was to defer election by two years as “quietly being requested by President Goodluck Jonathan.”

The lawmaker disclosed this in an interview with THISDAY in Lagos, noting that with the body language of the president and the senate president, Nigeria “will not hold elections from March 28. If anybody is thinking of elections, the person is deceiving himself.”

He explained that some of the lawmakers, who are perceptive, “have seen this in the body language of our colleague, even the Senate President, Sen. David Mark himself. We he came back from summer recess in 2014, he said, for him, this is not the time for elections.

“The senate president said we should not be thinking of election now. Rather, he said we should be thinking of how to fight Boko Haram. When we took him up on it, he reversed himself. There are several attempts to lobby some of us to work against elections. Where they have taken so far is a preliminary stage,” Ojudu explained.

He explained that because there “is an on-going war, the president will likely bring a motion for the deferment of the 2015 general elections by six month in the first instance next week when the National Assembly resumes session.

“The constitution allows it. The constitution says where and when there is a war in any part of Nigeria, the president can bring a motion to the National Assembly to postpone elections for six months in the first instance. This can be passed by a simple majority.”
